He who clings to a law does not fear the judgement that reinstates him in an order he believes in. But the keenest of human torments is to be judged without a law. Yet we are in that torment

I was probably in the realm of truth. But truth, cher ami, is a colossal bore.
Albert Camus, The Fall
I was courteous and indolent enough to live up to what was expected of me in my profession, my family, or my civic life, but each time with a sort of indifference that spoiled everything.
Albert Camus, The Fall
The obligation I felt to conceal the vicious part of my life gave me a cold look that was confused with the look of virtue; my indifference made me loved; my selfishness wound up in my generosities

Happy birthday Kafka! I'm sorry you existed before washi tape and the plethora of tiny but adorable stamps. <3
"The gov'ment's got more interest in a dead man than a live one." -Tom Joad in The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck.
The bitter truth in so many ways.
It’s strange to think that long before I had a name or a heartbeat, I existed in some shadowed, elemental way. Women are born with all the eggs they'll ever have, and these begin forming while they're still in the womb. So when my mother was just a fetus, the egg that would become me was already inside her. That means my grandmother carried not just my mother, but the beginning of me as well. For a fleeting moment, the three of use shared one body, and went through life together, layered like nesting dolls.
“But to say what you want to say, you must create another language and nourish it for years and years with what you have loved, with what you have lost, with what you will never find again.”
— George Seferis, from A Poet’s Journal: Days of 1945-1951 (Harvard University Press, 1978)
The act of love, for instance, is a confession. Selfishness screams aloud, vanity shows off or else true generosity reveals itself
At least seeing myself act with others, I couldn't deceive myself as to the truth of my nature. No man is a hypocrite in his pleasures.

I always considered misogyny vulgar and stupid, and almost all the women I have known seemed to me better than I. Nevertheless, setting them so high, I made use of them more often than I served them.
Albert Camus, The Fall
I went through the gestures out of boredom or absentmindedness. Then came human beings; they wanted to cling, but there was nothing to cling to, and that was unfortunate —for them. As for me, I forgot. I never remembered anything but myself.
Albert Camus, The Fall
The more I accuse myself, the more I have a right to judge you. Even better, I provoke you into judging yourself, and this relieves me of that much of the burden
Albert Camus, The Fall
But too many people now climb onto the cross merely to be seen from a greater distance, even if they have to trample somewhat on the one who has been there so long
Albert Camus, The Fall
We confess to those who are like us and who share our weaknesses. Hence we don't want to improve ourselves or be bettered, for we should first have to be judged by default. We merely wish to be pitied and encouraged in the course we have chosen. In short, we should like , at the same time, to cease being guilty and yet not to make the effort of cleansing ourselves.
Albert Camus, The Fall

Men are never convinced of your reasons, of your sincerity, of the seriousness of your sufferings, except by your death. So long as you are alive, your case is doubtful; you have a right only to their skepticism. In order to cease being a doubtful case, one has to cease being, that's all
Albert Camus, The Fall
Commanding is breathing and even the most destitute manage to breathe. The lowest man in the social scale still has his wife or his child. If he's unmarried, a dog. The essential thing, after all, is being able to get angry with someone who has no right to talk back. In one way it is very odd. To whom should one talk back in this world if not to what one loves?
Albert Camus, The Fall
