So perhaps it’s not the right thing to be thinking about when there’s quite a high possibility that they’ve been boarded by unidentified extraterrestrials, but it keeps the mood light.  The last thing Uhura needs to deal with is panic.

❝You know, you practically read my MIND.  Although I’d prefer to avoid suspicion, if that’s alright with you.❞

“Well thank  Spock’s  ears  I have  you  to keep me in line,”  he raises his eyebrows at her in amusement.  “I   do  do all those things usually.  Honestly.  This was a total one time thing. Promise.”

             He hums softly, thinking. “How’re we going to go about              this though, do we include other people? Or should we              assume they haven’t noticed, that they’ve been... brain              washed, or whatever...?” he shook his head. 

❝I just want to remind you that the term ‘alien’ is outdated, and the correct term is now ‘unidentified extraterrestrial’.  These are things you should know.

          And I wouldn’t jump to mind control immediately but - I think you’re RIGHT.  There’s something that doesn’t add up about this, and I didn’t want to bring it up to anyone else because it sounds a little crazy.  But if even you don’t know anything about them then YES, there’s definitely more to this than we know.❞

“I’m not wasting my time trying to churn out “unidentified extraterrestrial” when I’m in the middle of a crisis when I could just say ‘alien’. It’s just the two of us at the minute, are  YOU  offended? Something you need to tell me, are you hiding antennae under that hair?”

              He was glad that she’d deemed  HIM  crazy enough to               approach with this,  if she hadn’t the new ‘crew’ would               have probably slipped past under their noses and then               it would have been too late.

        ❝Being a Captain sure looks like hard work. I don’t think          I’d have the strength and sanity to be in that position.❞

    Anna sometimes wondered how her own CMO managed     to keep up with all of the reports and the patients, especially     the hypochondriacs. She knew that when she had to deal     with them it took every bit of patience she had to deal with     them. Naturally she was quiet, wouldn’t be harsh to them,     so it was easy to deal with them.

          ❝Thanks, I appreciate that,❞ she smiles. ❝Let’s work          our way up.❞ She liked whiskey herself, but she didn’t         want to be presumptuous.

                      He laughs at that, wonders if everyone thinks he’s strong                       and sane, if everyone else is as wrong as she seems to                       be right now.

           “Well we’re not all cracked up for the top jobs,” he says             dryly,  taps  his  fingers  against  the  edge  of  the  bar.             Sometimes he wishes he was still lower in command,             had waited through the academy and risen through the             ranks rather than jumped straight to captain. Sometimes.

❝No, I understand your frustration.  I’m just - confused.  How can we have fifteen new crewmembers that no one seems to know anything about? Sulu says he doesn’t even think their names were added to our lists until after we left Earth.❞

“What if they’re aliens? Like mindcontrol-ey aliens that’ve made us kind of notice but not notice? No higher-ups warned me it was going to happen, usually that stuff gets  months  advance warning but I’ve had nothing  -  it makes no sense to have new recruits now either we only set  off  a few  weeks ago,  if we  were getting  any newbies  they would’ve joined then...

❝So you really don’t know anything about the new cadets? Because at t h i s point, it doesn’t seem like ANYONE does.❞

     “I am  LITERALLY  the captain of this ship,  WHY  was I                 not informed? 

Spock hid his amusement at the other’s antics. Had he been human, it would have been a struggle. Instead, he simply pushed it back and raised one eyebrow at the captain.

“If you focus on the treaties, then perhaps we can arrange to share cultural differences. However, we must be wary as there is a chance anything we give them without a test first may very well kill them. That is a concern.” Spock explained, feeling like, once again, the big bad evil logic. It was best that than accidentally killing someone of a brand new treaty.

There’s a miniscule shift across Spock’s face but Jim doesn’t mention it, let’s the hidden emotion channel through that one eyebrow Spock seems to be overly fond of.

"...that’s true,” he conceded, the words made sense and really, he  knew  all that already but he had got distracted in the thrill of a new race, the excitement of a previously undiscovered planet, new ground, new life.
