it can be caused by any type of abuse, verbal/emotional, physical, sexual; it’s the environment of fear, criticism, shame, guilt tripping that would reinforce the behavior because while you’re being abused, the people pleasing is an adaptive behavior to avoid as much harm as possible. people pleasing can come from a fear of other people being disappointing in you, from a fear of external conflict, from a fear of rejection, from a fear of criticism, from a desire to avoid feelings of guilt that arise when you don’t do what someone else wants. people pleasing can also come about because you don’t have a sense of self and so you just go along with what other people want you to do or because of wanting to feel good and only getting self worth from helping other people. a constant invalidating environment from any form of abuse can easily lead to these fears and emotions or to a lack of self esteem/lack of sense of self that could cause you to constantly people please.
