Cutting Class

At his comment about decent people, Larcei could only he roll her eyes. He had a point there, sheâd admitâbut not out loud, obviously. If Joshua wanted to play the part of the unwashed rouge, she figured that was his business. And besides, even if he was a bit of a womanizer, the Isaachian dealt with worse. Much worse. As long as he refrains from getting poetic on her, they wonât have any problems getting along.Â
But his offer was intriguing, to say the least. It made her slow her roll and consider it for a split second. Fighting no-good scumbags had become something of a hobby of Larceiâs (fitting, given her current situation) and sheâd never lie about her strong sense of justice. âHmph,â is all she gave him at first, but she made sure to deliver the sound with a snarky undertone, âIâll consider it. As long as you donât get in my way, of course. This place doesnât offer enough opportunities for real fighting.â Now, the woman was perfectly content at leaving it at that, but as they crossed the academyâs great bridge, an idea came to mind. Luckily for Joshua, it was in the form of a bet. Heâd get a kick out of that for sure. âIâll tell you what,â she piped up some few seconds later, âKeep up with me during our match and you can have your little date. That way I know youâll pull your own weight.âÂ
With the terms laid out for the Jehannan, the only real thing left to do for Larcei was walk. And walk she didâall the way to the training grounds. They made good time and arrived well before the choir practice was even halfway over. Bonus points for not being caught, too! If Seteth saw Joshua being a bad influence for Larcei, heâd be dead meat.Â
Larcei was quick to action when they reached their destination. She knew the layout of the area, having been there more times than she could count, and made straight for the training weapons. A sword for her, and a sword for Joshuaâpicked up in either hand until one was tossed to the redhead. Those precious moments before battle were exhilarating to her. When itâs just you and your senses, honed in on one, singular purpose? Youâre at your highest. Larcei knew well that this was nothing more than a practice fight, but the look in her eyes said it allâshe treated it like it was the real thing. Bouts with her were notorious for being intense, so if Joshua didnât clue in now heâd have to find out the hard way. The one and only rule she imposed on herself was not to use Astra against those who didnât belong to House Isaach, so at least heâd been spared the shooting-star-strike. Regardless, Larceiâs body gave all the green lights that she was ready. Her stance was firm and centered, blade held just in front of her lithe body, eyes narrowed at Joshua, and lips curled into a stoic line. She didnât need to tell him she was ready for his assault, and only waited patiently for that first swing.Â
Pray that itâs a good one, Joshua.Â
âDead weapons? Really? A woman of your talents?â Joshua goaded the shorter woman as he caught the tossed sword, moderately incredulous. He only practiced with the blades he had on handânone of that âtraining weaponâ nonsense. Pain was a powerful teacher, and violence was an important lesson. Removing most of the lethality from a sword, or a lance, or any other weapon, was an educational disaster waiting to happen. Violence had consequences, damn it. Nonetheless, the redhead sighed in acknowledgement. âHave it your way, I guess.â
He wasnât a big fan of straight-bladed swords in the first place, preferring the curved backs of weapons like his Killing Edge. Heâd always thought that hooked blades held a lateral reach advantage, if one had the strength to wield the extra weight. All the same, a sword was a sword; he could wield one as easily as another. Besides, familiarizing himself with a variety of swords wouldnât hurt him. That knowledge could come in handy some day.
Larceiâs blade was kept before her, a strong and ready stance, and Joshua toyed with the idea of how he would begin. A weak, defensively-minded slash? A bold thrust? An even more daring flourish? He had options. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath to steady himself while keeping a loose grip on the training sword in his right hand. When he opened his eyes again, dark emerald irises stared out dispassionately, with lids neither halfway nor fully open. For the moment, he was not man or human; he was not flesh or blood. The metal in his hand was an extension of his selfâhe was his sword, and his sword was him.
His opening attack was straightforward and powerful, designed to see just how powerful Larcei was. He had no doubt that she could block it. Just as martial artists might strike at one another with matching âturning backâ kicks to determine the otherâs skill level, Joshua wanted to understand just who he was dealing with. The way she might turn her blade to reduce the force, what stability she maintained while receiving a high-powered strike, how she dealt with the fact that she was fighting an opponent with advantages in both reach and strength...they were all important factors to consider, and he would only have a moment to observe.
The mercenary hoped Larcei understood that he wasnât looking down on her by opening with such a simple swing. How far can I push you? It asked of her. How far can you push me?
