I visited several of these abandoned signal boxes of the Belgian railways in the past year, but this example, located at an important railway junction, was surely the most beautiful and impressive. Still relatively untouched by vandalism, except for a few smashed windows. The signal box became redundant when the control of train traffic was centralized. The construction of the new complex, which will serve as a control center for train traffic and as a training center, started in 2011. It was put into use in 2016, after which this signal box became vacant.

Apparently 40% to 50% of that hidden biomass is mostly likely these guys, bristlemouths, and they are thought to be the most abundant vertebrates on Earth, numbering in the quadrillions. The mesopelagic zone makes up 20% of the oceans so while the estimates are based on limited sampling, so far bristlemouths have been there wherever scientists go looking.

the dog: I’m at work! I’m doing so good at being at work! I’m barking because my handler gave the sign ‘bark’! I am going to get such a good grade in being a dog actor, which is completely possible to achieve, and normal to want! I am doing a great job! I am proud of myself for doing such a great job! I love this, because I’d make it physically impossible to get anything done if I wasn’t enjoying it! I’m barking!

His name was Jed, and even though he’s a dog, he deserves an oscar. He was an exceptionally good boy.

I honestly can’t imagine a better portrayal of a stoic, aloof White Fang, who gradually softens, than Jed.  Good boy.
