NEW PINE ROCKLAND ZINE ISSUE OUT NOW!! April 2018 - The Photography of Paul Marcellini featuring but a taste of the extensive work of @paulmarcellini . This issue is a great way to see the landscape of the Pine Rocklands handled by a professional photographer. . Since this habitat is sparse on the trees and bushes it is a very hot and sunny environment, perfect for the sun-loving plants but a little toasty for us! If you are a reptile like me than visiting in the middle of the day will do (but bring your sunscreen) or go there in the mornings or evening like Paul did in the photos featured in this issue! (You might even get a nice shot with one of those famous Florida sunrises/sunsets) . Link in bio to view this issue! . ππ½Sunscribe to the zine and help support the Miami Pine Rocklands Coalition! This zine was created to serve the dual role of educating about Pine Rockland habitat and supporting the MPRC. Donations from the subscriptions have totaled over $250! Use the link in the bio, and thank you subscribers! (at Boca Raton, Florida)
I had a great time at the Kissimmee Prairie Park Preserve at their spring wildflower walk! It's similar the the prairies of the mid-west: flat, grass-dominant. It also burns one a year, which is SUPER frequent. It guarantees that it will remain a tree-less, open landscape. tenacious fire-loving herbs, shrubs and flowers were our goal for the walk. The pink orchid steals the show, only appearing immediately after the burn and then disappearing back into the soil after being pollinated, to await the next burn! #dryprairie #wildflowers #florida #prescribedfire #kissimmeeprairie (at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park)
Come by my table on Sunday April 15th at the #miamizinefair to take home some stickers and Pine Rockland Zines! It's located at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex from 11-5pm @exilebooks #saveitdontpaveit #pinerocklands #miami #wip #zines #conservation #instagood #florida #artistsoninstagram (at Little Haiti Cultural Complex)
Here is the pen drawing of my next painting, coontie with atala butterflies. I wanted a little bit more of a graphic look for these next few paintings and so gravitated toward the dark outline which I will complete with some washy, some detailed watercolor later :) that paintbrush has a bow on it because I was trying to decide how I wanted to tie the cootie branches together (I went with the twine instead) #coontie #foliage #botanical #florida #pinerocklands #atala #butterfly #scientificillustration #miami #floridawildlife #watercolor #art #drawing #illustration #wip

Yesterday I went on the pine rockland field trip with the FNPS to Navy Wells in Homestead, visiting sites that had been recently burned and teeming with fascinating plants growing from almost solid rock. In the absence of fire, the tiny plants shown here get smothered by the larger shade-throwing bushes and trees, which is why there was such a diversity of them here. Not a bush in sight! We spied many state threatened and endangered varieties growing happily on their rocks all over this area, a little Easter miracle for me to see yesterday :) #pinerocklands #floridanativeplantsociety #nativeplants #florida #floridawildlife #floridawildflowers #miami #photography #naturewalk #nativeflowers #prescribedfire @fl_native_plants (at Navy Wells Pineland Preserve)
You can now read all the issues of Pine Rockland Zine for free online at KimHeise.com/zine :) share the love of local habitats with the community! #zine #kimheise #pinerocklands #watercolor #conservation #saveitdontpaveit #floridawildlife #localartists #localwildlife #florida #miami #fire
The importance of fire is one of the most fascinating things to me about Florida. In a state so wet and semi-tropical it seems ridiculous that habitats here would depend on regular fire burning the underbrush! This state is home to many fascinating phoenix plants which thrive only in the presence of fire, and animals that rely on the service of fire to maintenance their homes and rejuvenate their food sources. #zine #floridawildlife #florida #fire #pheonix #illustration #nature #art #conservation #wildlifeconservation #watercolor #miami #pinerocklands #botanicalillustration #scientificillustration
Just finished up Saw Palmetto Relationships, another large watercolor that has been marinating for some time now :) the internet might fool you into believing that saw palmetto usefulness begins and ends as a prostate medication (seriously, try typing that into a search bar) but the natural world has other uses! It is a keystone species supporting hundreds of creatures, including Florida black bear, the Florida panther pictured here, turkey, fox, quail, tortoises and 300 different types of insects alone. In this image, the Palmetto serves as cover for this panther and her kittehs. (I will have to make a separate painting to incorporate more species because I ran out of room) I was able to fit the monk and palmetto skipper butterflies that host on this plant, as well some bees who visit the flowers and a lady bug that joins in mostly to prey on other insects π #palmetto #floridawildlife #florida #watercolor #panther #kittehs #nature #illustration #botanicalart #conservation
The Pine Rockland zine is a monthly publication and subscription service to benefit the MPRC and their lawsuit. One zine will be published each month for 2018, and this month there is as EXTRA zine (although you can decide which one is the extra one). ππ½SUBSCRIBE to the zine by visiting Kimheise.com/zine #saveitdontpaveit #zine #miami #florida #pinerocklands #conservation

More mangroves work, coming a little bit at a time. #watercolor #mangrove that's a great #blueheron and an endangered Barbados Yellow warbler #floridawildlife #botanicalillustration #wip
I'm trying to bring out these mangrove leaves this weekend and it is talking FOREVER but I'm enjoying it :) #floridawildlife #wip #watercolor #foliage #mangrove
Dear Friends, The January issue of the Pine Rockland Zine is coming to mailboxes soon!!! I have made a few tentative decisions about the future of the zine and what it may do after this year. All 12 zines may appear together as a published anthology at year's end to commemorate this project and I'm considering ways to offer the issues in a downloadable format online so that more people may enjoy them. This month's issue will feature 3 endemic and endangered plants only found in Pine Rocklands, with resources for Floridians to identify, learn about and obtain native plants! Current subscribers and those that subscribe by the end of January will receive a hand-pulled, forest-green block-print postcard along with their issue, featuring The Florida Keys Thoroughwort (an endangered plant of the Pine Rocklands and one of the art pieces featured in this month's zine!) Subscribing at any time will get all previous zines sent to you, but, only those that sign up by the end of January and current subscribers and will receive the handmade postcard! 20$ out of the 24$ subscription cost is donated to the Miami Pine Rocklands Coalition as they fight to protect one of the last and largest regaining tracts from destruction. I'm doing this as a fun way to generate funds for the group to help with some of their legal fees. THANK YOU to subscribers, who generated a total of 100$ last month (whoot!) I'm having fun making these and am excited about future issues! To sign up, go to the link in my profile or kimheise.com/zine Additionally, I'm hand-pulling a small limited edition of block-prints from botanical art I made for this issue with a portion of each purchase going to the MPRC. If you like the art in this issue, block prints would be a great, economical way to own a hand-made piece of art! They will be for sale next week here (alongside the tiny drawings from the last issue!) at: http://pinerocklandzine.storenvy.com/ Save It, Don't Pave it! #Saveitdontpaveit #floridawildlife #zines #pinerocklands #blockprint #botanicalart #endangered #conservation #natureart
I'm getting started on the mangrove painting today! I've had plans for this painting since November and it feels good to get under way on this challenging piece. it is turned this direction because it's easier for me to work on, rather than reaching across a large painting (the reference photo is rotated too) #wip #watercolor #foliage #mangroves #floridawildlife
Dear Friends, This December, I have started a Pine Rockland Zine subscription service as a fun way to raise funds for the Miami Pine Rocklands Coalition in their lawsuit to save imperilled habitat from developers. This is a cause that is very important to me! Each month a tiny zine containing drawings and prose about the Pine Rocklands will be mailed to you, for 12 months. Each 24$ subscription amounts to a 20$ donation to the MPRC. To view the zine description visit http://www.kimheise.com/zine/ Additionally, the drawings that appear in the zine will also be for sale to benefit the MPRC amounting to a 45$ donation at https://kimheise.storenvy.com Visit the Miami Pine Rocklands Coalition website to make donations and learn more about the lawsuit and what you can do to help http://miamipinerocklandscoalition.com or become a member of the Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/MiamiRPC/ Note, if purchased as a gift the zines may NOT arrive before the 25th. I will, however, mail them the same day it is purchased if possible. Save it, Don't Pave It! #floridawildlife #zine #zines #pinerocklands #conservation #drawing #miami #florida

Finally finished photographing Sea Grape Relationships, 18x24 watercolor! If you remember, I was working on this a few months ago. Here are a few close-ups of the sections. Please bear with me as I improve on my handwriting :D now for the flavor text: Sea Grapes provide moderate food and significant cover for wildlife along the tropical coasts of the Americas and islands. They are vital to the preservation of coast, and prevent erosion and damage from storm surges. Endangered Florida Beach Mice rely on the habitat this plant provides and are mostly all endangered due to the loss and fragmentation of coastal sea grape habitat. Sea Grape is also credited with being an excellent light pollution wall along the coast, protecting hatching sea turtles from disorientation! It's dark showy leaves get as big as dinner plates, which I think is the most visually striking thing about it. I have such fondness for this beautiful native species! #julia and #hairstreak #butterflies with the #whitecrownedpigeon #redbelliedwoodpecker #beachmouse and #seaturtle on this #Florida #seagrape ! #floridawildlife #watercolor #conservation #kimheise
