Scene: "The Messy Room Saga"

It’s 4 PM, and the house is already alive with that quiet hum of routine—vegetables chopped, rice cooker working away, laundry folded, and tea steeping in the kitchen.

But there’s one thing that throws everything off balance. That room.

The Room.

The door is slightly ajar, revealing a tangle of clothes sprawled on the bed and an open laptop with headphones carelessly dangling from the desk.

The schoolbag, of course, sits lifeless in the corner, textbooks untouched. Somewhere under this mountain of mess might be a child we lovingly raised, but honestly, at this point, it’s debatable.

We tried to ignore it all morning, hoping—no, praying—that by some miracle the child would come to their senses and clean up the disaster zone. But as always, reality mocks us.

"Clean it later, Amma," they say, as if ‘later’ is a magical time where responsibilities handle themselves.

Breathing in slowly to suppress the familiar frustration, we march to the doorway.

“HOW many times have I told you to keep this room clean? Do you want guests to see this?”

Their usual reply follows— “Nobody's coming today, Amma!” And that’s when we feel it—the urge to explain every single problem in life through this moment.

“This is exactly why your future is in danger! No discipline now means no discipline in work, no discipline in family! How will you even take care of yourself later?”

The child gives us the Look—you know the one—like we’re ancient fossils who just don’t get it. But we do! It’s our job to get it. That’s why we have to remind them every single day that discipline builds character. If not us, who will teach them? If not now, when?

“Fine, don’t clean your room,” we say, folding our arms. “But when you fail your exams, don’t blame us. And don’t even think about bringing your phone to the dinner table tonight.”

We leave the door open, hoping guilt will do its job where words failed. As we return to the kitchen, we sigh. It’s not about the room, not really. It’s about preparing them for the real world—because someday, they’ll thank us. At least, we hope they will.

Now, time to reheat that tea.
