Ghost Trick repeatedly challenges the idea of "too late" – Too late to change, too late to fix things, too late to do better. The stagnation that comes from believing you are already beyond help, and the power of deciding to act even when things seem beyond fixing.
This is evident from the very beginning. The POV character is told early on that he won't last past the night, and he could have just given up there – because, well, what is the point of knowing what happened to you, if you're just going to vanish without anyone ever knowing about it?
Sissel chooses to search anyway. Perhaps just for his own curiosity, at first, but then he starts helping people who offer him no benefit. And his power literally is helping people after it's "too late." He brings back people who have already died, already crossed the ultimate threshold, because he, too, is acting after it should be too late for him.
But the idea of "too late" manifests in more ways than just death: this game is full of characters who have stagnated. Yomiel came back too late to save his fiancée, and he's dead, ageless, frozen in the moment of his own death, stuck in that moment of losing everything, the moment that it was too late for him. Jowd has resigned himself to a life in prison, accepts the death penalty, because Alma can't be saved and Yomiel can't be saved and it's too late for him to do any good for this world. Even when the meteor's course is averted, he fires the gun. The decision was already made, fate locked in place.
...And yet! The stagnation is a choice! Jowd resigning to his role as a murderer, believing he cannot be anything beyond that, means he leaves his daughter and everyone else who cares for him alone, leaves Kamila to grow through the formative years of her life with no parents instead of one and believe it's her own fault. Yomiel feeling that there is no hope for himself leads him down a path of revenge, and it gets his only friend killed. Both of them nearly sabotage their greatest allies because they cannot see past the horizon to a life worth living.
Ghost Trick is about knocking shit off tables and accidentally taking the wrong phone line and whacking a guy with a helmet going 1000mph, and the game always rewards you with funny dialogue because the point isn't to be perfect, the point is that you're someone who tries. There is always another chance to make things better, even if it's not in the way that you expect. It's never too late.
