Kufic is the oldest calligraphy form of the various Arabic scripts.
After a brief history of this art form and its development in Islamic and Arab countries, students will learn the Kufic alphabet (drawing individual letters); simple Kufic script; and square (geometric) Kufic.
More specifically, students will learn methods and thechniques to write their names and other words on graph paper and greeting cards.
This workshop is for the novice, the experienced artist, and anyone in between interested in learning something new, beautiful, and fascinating. Only requirement: be willing to have fun.

February 4th, 10am-1pm, Portland, Maine.
This hands-on workshop is for all interested in Arabic, design, pattern, and art – taught by Kifah Abdulla, artist, writer, and Arabic language instructor.
Arabic letters lend themselves to writing in different geometric shapes and can range from functional lettering to fine art with exquisite line work.
Workshop Outline
After a brief history of this art form and its development in Islamic and Arabic countries, students will incorporate calligraphic ornamentation and technique to learn how
to write their name, design greeting cards, and create artwork that expresses actual lettering or purely visual forms.

ANYONE! Just be ready for fun!
This workshop is for the novice or the experienced artist wanting to learn this beautiful lettering style as an art form.

The workshop will take place at Running with Scissors art studios and collective, 250 Anderson Street, Portland Maine, on Saturday, February 4, from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

1) sketchbook or paper
2) canvas or art board
3) an eraser
4) a ruler
5) any of these items you think you’d like to use for drawing and painting:

...and anything else that makes you happy.
