Google Doodle honors famed sculptor Edmonia Lewis on the first day of Black History Month

Today marks the beginning of Black History Month and to kick it off, Google’s Doodle honors Mary Edmonia “Wildfire” Lewis.

Lewish was a black Native American sculptor whose works earned her international fame and recognition in the art world. 

In 2002, Lewis was named one of the 100 Greatest African-Americans in a biographical encyclopedia by Molefi Kete Asante, a professor of African-American studies at Temple University. Read more

imagine you were born being unable to smell. you could see, hear, feel, and taste but you could not smell. people all around you tell you about how flowers smell. how some flowers smell sweet and others can smell more bitter. you’re confused, because you believe that bitter and sweet are words to describe the taste of food. people tell you about how flowers smell, and they hold flowers up to your nose to get you to smell them.

you smell nothing, and you might even sneeze from the pollen. you tell them to stop making you smell the flowers, because you just can’t. and they tell you, “flowers smell so good though!” and no matter how hard you try, you just can’t…smell…the…flowers.

So, real talk. 

I’ve read a lot of books in my day, but Abarat is probably the first book series that I’ve really, obnoxiously nerded out over. To like Harry Potter fan levels. If merchandise existed I’d probably own everything and I’d wind up on a buzzfeed video about “this ultimate fan who owns every single Abarat action figure what is her problem.” If there was an actual midnight opening for the upcoming book I’d probably be first in line. If Hot Topic sold Abarat t-shirts I would wear them. 

Fortunately none of that exists so I can maintain some level of sanity.
