I'm in love with this actually
Antibacterial soap??? For your body???
I wash my wretched walking corpse with bleach and formaldehyde to prevent bacterial accumulation
You are an inspiration to us all
if you’ve had a significant surgery you’ve probably been told to shower with antibacterial soap, and they literally tell you not to use it regularly because it FUCKS your microbiome. you can tell, too- your skin feels fucking disgusting and weirdly sick for days afterwards
to specify: antiseptic hand soap can be fine if it's just your hands because you use those to touch everything in the world and then eat with em. helps cut down on the amount of germs and viruses and harmful bacteria you transfer into your mouth.
the rest of your skin can benefit from washing with soap and warm water, but antibacterial soap used as a regular cleanser can take it too far. you're actually supposed to have bacteria on you. your microbiota is a healthy and helpful part of your immune system. going scorched earth full sterilization on skin can make it dryer, weaker, and sicker.
one of the hardest parts is that you cannot engage in arguments without an honest partner. a person has to be genuinely willing to consider your point of view. when elon saluted, you have eyes and you saw it too. when they're saying "nooo it wasn't that," it's not honest. they also know it's the nazi salute, they're just seeing how long and how far they can push you.
i cannot stress this enough: know when to step away. know when it's just a troll. know when you're putting energy into the wrong areas. it is so fucking tempting to get into hour-long debates. i got caught in one literally hours after it happened. i am not coming to you from a place of calm suggestion: i'm mostly reminding myself, partly out of desperation.
like you, i feel incredibly, unspeakably upset. if nothing else, i feel fucking gaslit. i keep returning to how cliche passages from 1984 have become. i keep thinking - how fucking stupid do you think we are? i keep thinking - holy shit. he's going to get away with it.
lately when i get really upset about something like this, i instead look for volunteering opportunities in my community. this has been genuinely amazing and has helped me feel like i'm actually fucking doing something. yes i still make the posts and i still doomscroll. these days, though, i take "invest in your community" as a demand, not a suggestion. going to library events. checking in with friends. helping others.
it does actually help; turning nebulous anger into something real and useable. i am still learning this, by the way. but i have noticed that when i am pulled down to their level, i walk away feeling incapacitated, red-black with rage, blurry with stress and the horrible sense of an inescapable destiny.
and meanwhile, every time i instead try to move forward positively, with the real intention just being i'm going to help someone today if it fucking kills me - change happens like, immediately. the hour of effort i spend helping out people in my community has massively improved my burnout and anxiety.
to be honest it is all still burning a hole in me. the casual acceptance of white nationalism under barely-coherent threadbare excuses. the ceaseless unbearable rage and unfocused helplessness are still present but, like. these days i get up, i make coffee, i go help somebody. i fucking put my back into it. rather than saying to myself when is someone gonna do something - i am someone. and i am going to fucking do something. perfect is the enemy of good. i am not trying to be perfect, i'm trying to do good.
i don't know if i'm ever gonna, like. change anything on a real level. but i do know i fucking tried. and it is slowly, kinda - helping me feel better.
dear usamerican high schoolers looking for a way to resist fascism: sit through the pledge of allegiance.
no getting up. no looking at the flag.
everyone will be looking at you. you'll be sweating like a fucking hippopotamus. your teacher will sternly tell you to get up. you'll feel stupid and that maybe its not worth it because you're just a kid in a classroom. but I'm here to remind you that there are no real life consequences to detention. there are however real life consequences to resisting a thoughtless performance of nationalism.
not to talk tough but i have sat through every pledge of allegiance in my life, and that includes the bush administration's hyper-patriotic war on terror.
you can NOT be compelled to say the pledge, and that also means you can't be given the 'choice' of doing it or taking a punishment. being sent into the hall is a grey area.
if you are punishing for refusing, parents or a more sympathetic teacher (like say a history or english teacher) can step in to intercede with the principal. do not be afraid to escalate.
it is critical now of all times that you PRACTICE civil disobedience, starting small, sticking to it, and working up, this will help you learn how very much disobedience you can actually get away with in this life, which is actually a hell of a lot.

“National teacher shortage” is a fun way of saying that the USA has made a passion driven job so ungodly inhospitable that even people who “just care about teaching, not the money” don’t even care about teaching anymore.
you mean i could make less at school than at mcdonalds while working 60+ hours a werk and being expected to take a bullet any minute and contracting every disease ever and still not be able to cover my bills june-september while parents and politicians blame me for why their kids are gay
no but seriously I still get chills thinking about turning off my headlamp in the cave and The Hand That I Did Not Actually See, and it’s been twelve years since it happened
it’s such an unreal experience
like
you turn off your light in a cave and wave your hand in front of your face
and
you can see this shadowy thing moving in the black space where your hand is
it looks like the same shadowy thing you would see in your room at night if you waved your hand in front of your face, it’s there and vaguely hand-shaped, and your brain recognizes it as your hand because your brain is aware of where your hand is and what it is doing
But You Are Not Seeing Anything
Inside a cave, there is No Light. No matter how far your pupils spread, there is no light for them to draw in, no light to put an image on your retina.
But your brain just Fucking Assumes that because it knows where your hand is and what it is doing, clearly it can see it.
So it creates a shadowy thing for your eyes to be seeing.
Brain is like “there’s a hand there”
Eyes are like “yup sure thing brain I can totally see it”
Brain is like “nice”
but there is no hand, you cannot see the hand, you are seeing a literal actual hallucination in the cave because your brain thinks it knows best
Caves are awesome, but also terrifying. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
we once went spelunking, and a our guide said that once he was in a cave with a stream, so he could hear running water, and his brain was like ‘oh, running water? that means there must be Ducks out there’. and he saw like…low light shadows of ducks. that his brain just Put There.
As a cave guide: we call that ‘cave blindness’! True darkness absolutely wigs your brain out - we’re such visual creatures that after a while our brain throws a hissy after not seeing anything. Sensory deprivation is a very real kind of torture. We have a huge, deep cave system at work and there are a lot of places where you’re hundreds of meters in solid rock in this tiny, dark, still space.
I like to turn my torch off, sit down with my back against the wall, and wait to see how long it takes before I start seeing things or feeling like the ground is moving, or hearing things. Because I know I’m not - I’m in complete darkness, utter silence, sitting in rock that hasn’t moved in hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
Proof that brains are Ridiculous and over-react to a lot of stuff!
During the most recent caving trip I went on, our little group took a break in a large chamber to sit down and turn off our head lamps and wait in silence until we started hallucinating. It only took a few minutes for most of us to start “seeing” lights, shadows, or one another. I like to imagine this was a pastime for paleolithic people as well.
i remember in 9th grade my class went on a field trip to the local cave system and while we were down there our tour guide told us to do the same and so we all turned our lights off and within minutes we swore we could see our classmates even though we were under i want to say a mile of rock. it was the most amazing and baffling experience to know my eyes wouldn’t lie to me, and yet… there they were lying to me
Next time transphobes call trans healthcare "experimental" you can show them this
penicillin was first discovered in 1928; vaginoplasty is less experimental
ibuprofen was first discovered in 1961; phalloplasty and HRT are less experimental
Adderall was first applied as an ADHD treatment in 1994; puberty blockers are less experimental
My cat got a cold and the vet recommended a warm compress for his eyes. I think he’s enjoying his spa time.

some of my favorite woven tapestries, by Cecilia Blomberg:

WOVEN TAPESTRIES???
WOVEN TAPESTRIES?!?
Every time a small child starts crying or having a tantrum in my vicinity and I catch the parents glancing at me I’ve started saying “me when…”.
Friend kept trying to tell his crying kindergartener to calm down and relax and the kid growled “I AM relaxed” while visibly tensing every muscle in his body and I was like “oh that’s me at work every day” and we had a chuckle.
Parents look to other adults like “shit are they mad? Do they think my kid is acting like a demon?” And this response is my attempt to say “no. I think your kid is just acting like a human being.”
I WISH I could fling myself on the ground and cry because I experienced a minor inconvenience.
you will live and you will say the wrong things and make mistakes and people will love you anyways.
i made this post because i've got so many friends that think saying something wrong in a conversation is the end of the world. it isn't. you'll be okay. you don't have to be embarrassed about every little thing. you are alive and doing things and speaking to people. you will make mistakes and you will live.
if you're subscribed to Microsoft word, you probably received an email recently saying they're upping their prices. Like, a lot. ($9.99/month instead of $6.99)
guess what though? you can log into your account, click Cancel Subscription, and get the option to continue your subscription at the same price WITHOUT their bullshit AI.
That's right, the new, higher price is actually a different subscription that includes AI that everyone is being opted into by force! What a cool and fun product that clearly everyone wants.
you can also choose to buy Word 2024 without AI for a single lump sum that will be yours in perpetuity, with no updates, for one computer.
Check your subscription if you need Word for work! Don't get duped into paying for something you might not even want

And not to detract from how this affects disabled people, but this also applies to cyclists and people pushing strollers.
I personally have found electric scooters to be useful as someone who doesn't own a car, but you have to keep in mind that you're not the only person who needs to use the sidewalks and/or cycle paths, and it's not so easy for everyone to just go around if the path is blocked.
And this doesn't just apply to electric scooters, this also applies to how many people park their cars blocking sidewalks and/or cycle paths.
Also, those things are HEAVY. I've had to get out of my chair and try to move them and couldn't. Someone who can't stand up would be even more screwed. I honestly want to throw them into the street when I see this.
You should be able to report them and whoever the fuck owns them should fine the last person who used them.
[ID: a comic of two people riding scooters and one person using a wheelchair, all on the same sidewalk. The scooter people say "These city scooters are great!" "Oh yeah! Getting around the city is so easy now!" Behind them are three improperly parked scooters that block the sidewalk access for the wheelchair user. end ID.]
Actually, you can report improper scooter disposal, AND the person can get fined for it. Look up your city's improper scooter parking rules, but here is generally what you should do, taken from my city's website on it.
" When reporting a parking issue, you must provide an address and specify the operator, and the type of parking violation; otherwise, we cannot notify the operator to remedy the issue.
Bikes and scooters that are incorrectly parked should be reported so Lime and/or Lyft know to remedy the violation. There is also an option to report bikes and scooters that are being ridden incorrectly. The city provides an easy way to report them by calling 311 and through our Violation Form by following the process below:
1. Determine if the bike or scooter is parked incorrectly such as, blocking the sidewalk, curb ramps, utility access, and/or on private property, specific examples include:
Not standing upright using kickstand
Not permitting at least 5ft of pedestrian clearance
Not permitting at least 4ft of utilities clearance
Parked within 1.5ft (18in) from the curb or building
Parked blocking visibility/sight triangles at intersections or transit stops
Parked on private property
Not in good working order
º Dilapidated
º Broken/missing kickstand
º Missing ID number or QR code
2. Take photos of the violation, ID number, and QR code to submit with violation
3. Identify the Operator
º Lime – Green & Red
º Lyft – Pink & Black or Pink & White
4. Determine if the vehicle is being ridden incorrectly and report a moving violation ticket:
º Riding on sidewalk
º Speeding
º Riding in wrong direction
º Disobeying traffic laws
º Other
5. Violation Type (Operator, User, or Moving)
Operator Violation – Bikes or scooters deployed by Lime or Lyft. Often deployed in groups of five or more. Damage to vehicles (such flat tires, graffiti, broken kickstands, or other vehicle damage) is also an operator violation.
User Violation – Bikes or scooters parked by riders after use. These are often parked in groups of one to three scooters or bicycles, rather than five or ten like when the operators deploy vehicles.
Moving Violation – Any unlawful operation of a Lime or Lyft scooter or bicycle. This includes behaviors such as sidewalk-riding, riding against the flow of traffic, or disobeying signage or signals. "
Please report scooters left on sidewalks, and if you can, move them.
And if you are thinking to yourself, "this should be illegal," look up if it is. Maybe you can do something about it!
When South Africa dismantled apartheid, it did not end with the expulsion of all white South Africans. They became part of the new South Africa, just without the criminal discriminatory oligarchic powers the apartheid goverment had. When Bolivia recognized its indigenous heritage and became a plurinational state, it did not mean that people of European descent were expelled in masse. It meant the recognition of the previously discriminated indigenous and mestizo people of Bolivia and the beginning of a path of integration and revalidation.
What I mean is that it's ridiculous to think that decolonization inherently means mass suffering and relocation, that's what colonization does. Decolonization is recognizing the crimes of colonization, but more importantly, material, political and social steps to give power and self-determination to the exploited native people who were victims of colonialism and imperialism.
In multicultural societies, you don't go like in that Peter Griffin meme with a skin tone chart and saying 'well, you go back to Europe, you go back to Africa, you stay here'. You build a new society on the paradigm of dignity for exploited people and equality under the law. People are acting like this is some sort of fantastic utopia instead of real initiatives that were done in living memory, with successes and failures, as all such initiatives have. One must ask why are some so insistent that multicultural societies can't thrive, especially when for most of history, societies were indeed like that. Consider why you think like that.
