Having created marketing campaigns, I would like to point out that these are very fucking different things.
Marketing campaigns are made by actual fucking artists and writers who are actually being paid a liveable wage for once, and the good ones are not about tricking you into clicking an advert by making the X really small or spamming you with emails you didn't sign up for.
I'm fucking sick of this. This conflation of BAD ADVERTISING, created by people who don't want to pay professionals to get a message out, and the actual job, which YOU NEED PEOPLE TO DO.
I did marketing for a university.
I have done marketing for books.
Did you read a prospectus when you were thinking of going to a college or a university? That was made by a fucking marketing coordinator, organising a vast number of people (graphic designers, researchers, teachers, deans, housing managers, alumni, student union reps, and more) to get a huge amount of fact-checked information laid out in a way that was engaging and easy to read, so you could find the information you wanted and get a feel for the place you were considering giving a fuckton of money to.
I've made campaigns to get students voting, promote research competitions, and improve engagement for the library and disability support teams.
Do you want that no one should do that?
Worse: do you want that no one who knows what they're doing should do that? Because I have seen what well-meaning folks who are not trained marketing professionals (marketing professionals who are, again, ARTISTS AND WRITERS) create and it rarely comes across the way they mean it to.
People who make marketing campaigns also don't make fucking six figures. I made around ÂŁ25,000 a year. It was the best money I had ever made as a writer and artist up to that point. The only thing that paid better was tech writing, and that industry is a nightmare.
And don't think it's just marketing for universities that has a role to play.
How is it you know about Cif? Mr Muscle? Walker's Crisps? John Lewis? M&S? Chances are you've seen an ad campaign.
And maybe you're thinking, 'Sure, but I would rather not buy products from these massive corporate behemoths.' OK. Then what you need is for small, independent producers to have better fucking ad campaigns, so you know about them.
Have you ever tried to get a service or product that's not in the mainstream? Like, when I needed to buy a mobility scooter, for example. Do you know how difficult it is to find out information from people who don't have the funds to do good marketing? How hard it is to tell what the features of different products are and which firms are reliable?
You DON'T hate marketing, which is just the skilful conveyance of information in a timely and effective manner. You hate capitalism, which has conveniently taught you to blame one of the few industries in which writers and artists can be paid cash money and get a steady job with benefits.
