didn't want to piggy back directly on the last reblog cos the direction I'm taking this is a little different but in the same way people struggle to see the Vi pov when Jinx is in the picture I argue that people struggle to see the Caitlyn pov when Vi is in the picture, that the pedestal that Powder/Mylo/Vander put Vi on is not the same as the one Vi put Caitlyn on but it bears marked similarities.
Now clearly Vi doesn't expect Caitlyn to fix all of her problems nor does she expect Caitlyn to bear all the responsibility for what is going on--in this way the specifics of the expectations for both of them differ--but she held inside her an image of who she thinks Caitlyn is, that Caitlyn cannot be because Caitlyn is human, similar to the way Vi cannot be for herself and for her loved ones what she wants to be, because that is impossible given the outside circumstances. Vi can no more fight the world and solve her problems with her fists than Caitlyn should be expected to remain a saint and above all emotions/feelings.
It's just another manifestation of this cycle of impossible to meet expectations, of putting people on a pedestal because you need something to hold onto.
But what's most delicious is that what makes caitvi work is that they eventually get to a point where they meet in the middle, so to speak, no more pedestals. Vi sees Caitlyn for who she is, someone capable of being so human (making those mistakes) but also still able to be good in a way that is astonishing (letting Jinx go). And that breaks Vi out of her own cycle too where she realizes that she no longer has to try to carry everything on her back by herself, that she is allowed to be wrong and still be cared for, that she can have made mistakes that feel unforgivable and still be loved, because that is, in fact, how she thinks of Caitlyn who she loves.
It's the beauty of loving someone and in the love of their imperfections, discovering the ability to love yourself.
