People of integrity and good character generally have a better life than manipulative hypocrites. Genuinely do the best you can do in everything you do. Render noble service with dignity and without showing off.
Have and show unconditional love for others, demonstrate humility with acts of goodwill, without seeking pleasure, profit, or personal safety. Others do not need to understand what you do for them when you are doing it, it is likely only your absence will make them realize how much they meant to you.
The work you do, especially if you are not directly compensated for it, has value to you and to all of humanity; we are free to choose our obligations, so make good choices.
