I think one of the things that has kept me so interested in aftg for so long is how much nuance is in every single character.

Like depending on how you look at it, every single character is an irredeemable asshole who’s deeply problematic in so many unforgivable ways yet there’s so much to dissect about each of their perspectives and so much of it is reasons not excuses

Take Nicky for example. He assaults Neil in the first book (unforgivable and problematic) however his actions are caused by his terrible upbringing where he was made to believe his sexuality is a sin and so he overcompensated to the point where he didn’t know where the line was between accepting his sexuality and forcing it on others. His actions are objectively wrong, but it’s easy to see how he got to that point (reason, not excuse) and it’s fascinating to me as someone vaguely interested in psychology.

And you can do this with every single one of the foxes, there’s no end to deep diving into their psyches. It’s kept me entertained and engaged for nearly six years now I just love these silly problematic fictional people.

Nicky but when he got custody of the twins he kept getting them mixed up so he stopped using their names and only used pet names to avoid An Incident

i don’t see enough of andrew stealing neil’s clothes considering how premeditated the canon instance of it happening was

bc getting in the shower with neil (even fully clothed) is a pretty big thing for andrew and he definitely thought about it in advance. which means he could have brought clothes and didn’t. he wanted to steal neil’s clothes. which is big deal. theoretically getting in the shower could have been impulsive on andrew’s part (which is still a big deal but in a different way) but i personally love interpreting these moments as andrew allowing himself to want something even if it’s as cliche as wearing his boyfriend’s clothes. bc, yeah the that phrase isn’t quite right bc they don’t use those terms, but that doesn’t take away from that being what it is. andrew decided he wanted something that he normally deem unnecessary or unimportant and he deserves to be able to do that.

Neil who hates his hair so Andrew makes it a point to quietly help Neil care for it ie buying good shampoo brands, helping Neil comb out the knots; running his fingers thru it at night.

Neil who hates his eyes so Andrew will drop nonchalant comments about how “they look much better than those shitty contacts you used to wear.” Andrew who knows others agree.

Neil who hates the scars on his face so Andrew will trace over them with the pads of his fingers; will allow the tip of his nose to brush over Neil’s burn scar on his way up to kiss Neil’s temple, because they both enjoy kisses on spots where feeling each other’s pulse is possible.

Neil who hates the constant reminders of his father and Andrew who remains so smitten bcs all he could ever possibly see is Neil.
