Stumbled upon this little visualization of he plot and timeline of inception. I thought it was pretty neat and illustrated clearly some key factors. It maps the whole thing out pretty well explaining it in an 'easy to understand way'.

Biblical story flow charts
A rather strange example but these charts show a very simple and clear visualization of Biblical stories. The designer has clearly been influenced by underground train maps. Although not the best example they are pretty clear and demonstrate how the story flows in time.

Phil Campbell's designs for The God father are visually very interesting to explore and raise many interesting questions about how story structure and narrative can be expressed. We want to build on this and alter it to suit our idea. The way character interactions are expressed need to be very clear and visually appealing so we need to keep that in mind.

Our buffalo skull so far. I created in yesterday morning using air dry clay. The horns are going to be created separately using paper mache as the would be far too heavy made from clay. I'm pretty pleased with it so far. I'm hoping that when It drys further we will be able to cut our the bottle that kept it strong before it was dry. If not when i'm painting it, I'll paint it black. I'm hoping to paint it next Monday. We're going to go for an older orche and brown colour scheme to make it seem dated.

Some beautiful Asian water buffalo skulls. We want to possibly create a skull for our artifact in this project. Our initial idea was to bring in a real skull however after looking into it we realised that that would be impossible. We then decided to create one our of clay. I have some experience with clay and so offered to do it. Our idea for the artifact is to use the skull as a representation of the desecration and defiling of the Vietnamese people. We want to have the skull have a bullet hole and blood splatter in the shape of the USA symbol, the bald eagle. In two of these examples, we see the eagle has been literally carved into the skull. We though that the effect of a blood splatter would be more effective. We're still playing around with the idea and it is still very much fluid but we think we're on the right track.

This website shows some really interesting insight into the different characters in platoon and how the story is structured. It breaks it down in a way that's very understandable and makes you look at the characters in a different light. Particularly the end section on how the relationships between characters work is very interesting.

This is a really basic layout of the main hero's journey in platoon and so it's really handy to look at when we are crafting our own hero's journey for our minor character.
"Not many people know that buffalo contributed to the succeed of Vietnamese Revolution against foreign invaders. They are not only used to carry loads for famers, but they can also carry loaded carts of supplies for Vietnamese soldiers during the war. Buffalo were an undercover means of transport, they could walk on very poor roads, accross bridges and rivers, and climb steep hills ,ect. Apart from their contribution in vietnamese econonomy and history, buffalo have become a cultural symbol for our nation."
This ties in beautifully with our ideas of the buffalo and how i would view the war. We are also considering it having it's own agenda eg attempting to find a mate, with the war being merely a nuisance. We are also looking into how it will ti in with the other characters. Bunny would be an interesting figure to interact with as is cruelty to animals is very apparent.
Week 2 - 4
For the next part of our New Narratives module we have to create a schematic for our movie, Platoon. after writing a rough schematic and narrative for the characters not present in the scenes we thought that it was still lacking and decided to try something different. We had taken note of the appearance of a water buffalo at key moments during the film. With some research we discovered that the water buffalo is national animal of Vietnam and that is a powerful symbol in their culture. It represents agricultural prosperity and well being as they provide so much for the people; plowing the fields, providing milk and meat. So we have decided to look at the journey this movie from the perspective of the neutral party, the buffalo. We will tell it's story and follow it on it's journey, which will tie in with our narrative.

We've seen people living in tiny homes, big homes and everything in between -- but nobody has ever taken underwater dwelling to a level like this. A Japanese architecture firm has unveiled renderings of what would be the world's first underwater ...
Some really awesome concepts by the Shimizu Coroporation. These designs show what a floating underwater city would be like and tackles some of the issues that people would com into contact with if they attempted this.
What the future might hold has long been a topic of speculation for artists and creative types. Trying to imagine what the world around us might look like in twenty, fifty, hundred years, or even end of the world can provide hours of entertainment. And it’s obvious that those artists ... These designs are awesome and really inspiring for the project. Sustainability and practicality is something we have to consider, but this view point looks very much at the overall design and structure of the city. Some of the examples are really spectacular.
It may look like the human battery farm from The Matrix, but the Graft Tower is actually a "parametric-designed eco-hotel and vertical farm," which includes plant material growing inside its structure and creates ethanol through natural processes.
"Optimizing the frame's capacity for natural ventilation and cooling, a twisting tower is created, with each unit's shape stretching toward the West, as determined by wind dynamics. Water is collected at the bottom of each unit and then dispersed throughout the open framework into the vertical farming. The plants grow sporadically throughout the transforming building, as they are able to find water and sunlight... Condensation, which is typical problem in the Puerto Rico environment, is managed by the yellow "vascular" system. Certain portions of the vascular system also distribute liquid ethanol, a product of the artificial photosynthesis skin panels, which fuels the energy demands of the building. The faceted skin allows a large variation in the electro-chromatic vision panels." - eVolo
This whole design is really cool. The way it takes sustainability into account is really important too as it's something we really have to consider.
So after following the Jonas tutorial this was the result. I followed it pretty closely, though I exaggerated it slightly more in some places so the poses are more extreme. I'm gonna try and mess about with the model some more and create some different aniamtions.
For my bouncing ball animations I was thinking about having the happy and sad balls together to contrast their personalities and movements. So as I was researching I came across this example of a sad and a happy bouncing ball interaction. While it's still pretty basic it does nicely show the relationship and differences between the two.

This example of some balls bouncing in Maya Illustrates well how different weights effect the ball. When it comes to emotions I think that weights should play a big part. With the happy emotion the ball should be weighted at the bottom. It should be flamboyant and dramatic, bouncing very high and very enthusiastically. The sad ball, in contrast, should have a lot more weight (more like the bowling ball). It should practically roll and seem sluggish in comparison. The angry ball should be violent and erratic in their movements. Banging against the ground and moving in a fast paced way.

Semester 2
We have just received our feedback for the previous semester. Overall my result was pretty good, however I really want to try and do better. I need to document my work better and keep a better record of everything done, documenting it in a clear and logical way. I'm really looking forward to this semester. We were sorted into groups and so for the New Narrative module over the next few weeks I'm going to be with Natasha Crowley, Oisin and Tasha Pelan. We have to read Vogler's, "The Writer's Journey", exploring his work on Archetypes. We are focusing on Shapeshifters, Shadows and Allies. We also have to create some work in Maya, looking at emotions in basic spherical characters as well as following a tutorial to rig Jonas (the lamp character). I'm looking forward to giving it a go. In our Data Imaging and Visualization module we have to select our own groups and design a vessel capable of holding and sustaining the population of Belfast. We need to create and render this in Maya. For this I am working with Christian, Matthew and Natasha Crowley.
