It's been a while since this has been discussed in the academy then I found my original post from 2017 on the topic. Figured a reminder was overdue... Over the last 15 years great steps have been taken for the development of Kernow Martial Arts in particular regarding our stance against all forms of political, racial, religious, disability and sexual intolerance both within Kernow Martial Arts and the community as a whole. We believe that Kernow Martial Arts should be a place where people of any age, ability, race, faith and sexuality should feel safe and comfortable. It has always been agreed that any individual considered to be discriminatory against any minority groups or individuals, within or outside of Kernow Martial Arts, will not be welcomed within our organisation. Throughout all classes we take moves to promote these core values of martial arts and to continue to create a feeling of inclusiveness for all. We have always hoped that all students and parents will support us in our quest for equality in Martial Arts. We have always had a policy where staff and volunteers should refrain from commenting on any topics which can be considered controversial or could cause offense especially on social media platforms. The recipient of the endeavour award this year has a great many day to day challenges to overcome in an effort to integrate in to wider society: Our winner, Samuel, has a diagnosis of Autism, ADHD, and DCD. When the Doctors at Great Ormond Street hospital told the parent this they literally felt that the future had just vanished. He was 5 years old. Samuel is now nearly 10 and never once in all those years have they let the daily challenges he faces stopped him from wanting to try new things, to be included, and most of all never to submit. He has opened-up the future his parents thought was closed. Before we start let's get one thing straight...Krav Maga is not necessarily the best self defence system in the world and it's not something new. It's only as good as the practitioner and it's techniques have all been seen elsewhere before in other styles. It's the approach and attitude that's different. Its techniques are direct and destructive without any need for complex fancy movements to memorize. Bruce Lee when referencing Jeet Kun Do said to take from it what works for you and leave the rest behind. Krav Maga uses the exact same philosophy, there is no right or wrong only what works for you. If a technique doesn't come naturally in training then it's not going to come naturally under pressure in a real life scenario. That's where hard and repetitive training comes in. Remember the saying train hard, fight easy? Never could that be more relevant than in self defence. Krav is not for the faint hearted, it is brutal and you probably end out battered and bruised, but it's all worth it. Our winner of Krav Maga student of the year is a perfect example of these philosophies. He gives every session 100% and never quits. While training hard he will always respect the abilities of others and it's willing to step up to the mark and offer support to his training partners when needed.
