Just like the other martial arts. 

Fumikomi is one of the problems kendo later starts have. This is one solution for you if you are struggling with it!

Foundation: Posture and Feet Position: In kendo, posture and feet positions are the foundation. If you have a bad posture and bad feet positions, you cannot have a good kamae (chudan, jodan and nito). Depending on your body shape, you might have your feet wider apart and so forth but I am sharing some ideas for adult learners or later starters. 

Kendo Study: 5 Points to Put Pressure (5 seigan): You have 5 parts to point the kensen of your shinai at your opponent. Try them and see what happens. There are variations so study this at your training.
