just felt like writing about my current obsessions n musings
possible content warnings: mental health, body dysmorphia/weight, dads
so yeah i just felt like writing without the wrist pain of doing it in my tiny planner. its all just stuff ive been into or thinking about this past month.
music in rotation
Geese - discography
Cameron Winter - Singles
Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam + Water Curses EP
Vampire Weekend - Contra + Only God Was Above Us
Wedding Playlist
like all good things Rudy introduced me to Geese and like all good things i was too slow to fully buy into them until suddenly theyve got a sold out US tour. we didnt get to see them in LA and we probably never will at this point.. the hype machine is just so well oiled i cant see them playing small venues anymore. they performed on SNL last month and man, forget it. its real nasty in the stan trenches right now i tell you what.
i dont really know how to sell anyone on their sound, not better than the countless articles and videos out at the moment. my favorite song right now is Art of War off of the 4D country EP, which is like a really dancy "im different i can fix him" type song where the him in question is like, a war criminal haha. its got a lot of hooks that get stuck in my head. i love listening to their first album Projector and hope they return to playing a few of those songs live one day. for this tour its been fun to see what they do with the songs off of Getting Killed, the live performances can be very unpredictable and fun.
of cameron winter's solo stuff i like Singles the most, so far. sometimes the droning and wailing of Heavy Metal loses me, but the Singles tracks are perfectly bittersweet and the vocals are more singable, less syncopated? and there are shades of yearning in there which is in my top 5 hobbies if im being so for real. its insane that bryan safdie, PT anderson, and baz luhrmann filmed his schroeder ass performing at both carnegie hall and the sydney opera house... like that shit sounds like a mad lib lol
been revisiting two faves: Contra and Strawberry Jam. im trying to train my ears to hear chord progressions under everything in a mix starting with Contra. its tough. the piano parts are very baroque (?), bach (?), sounding, with the pedal tones and stuff. love how they dance in and out and around the other parts. im spending some time with their most recent album Only God Was Above Us since i was only listening to the singles when they first came out. it feels like the vampire weekend i remember.
Strawberry Jam is my favorite Anco album - the first one i was exposed to in highschool, which i then revisited in college. it gives me lots of feelings of being young, lazy, stupid, in love, out of love, etc. the water curses EP is another favorite, its colorful and dripping and cavernous. i feel very lucky to have heard some of these older songs live!
sidenote i read in an old interview that geese cites anco as inspo, that emily green's favorite album is feels and that cameron's is SJ. i think i do hear it. i think they should cover peacebone. (geese if youre reading this you have the chance to do something so funny right now)
sidenote 2 i am obsessed with japanese artists who are obsessed with britpop and american bands. they make the best fanart. i fond a vampire weekend otaku (they said so) that has a thousand drawings of ezra koenig and is slowly amassing as many of geese. i hope we can be friends and trade stickers one day lmao.
sidenote 3 i had an old oc whose look i based off ezra koenig lol. i had another oc whos look i based of off panda bear....
i went out with some friends during the straight people football holiday. stopped by the mexican market and had delicious aguachile, pan dulce, and churros. then we sang karaoke at a cheap lil place in a neon lit vietnamese strip mall. the karaoke interface was kind of a pain and kind of random in selection, but i ended up finding paul simon's kodachrome. i remember i asked for it to be put on rudy's "wedding playlist" of songs he would play live at our wedding alongside friends. in an ideal world i would have learned this one on piano by now... but time gets away from me and a big fun wedding party may not be in our future after all. it feels like the last and only time ill get to have everyone in my life together to celebrate something happy. its odd - mourning something that hasnt happened? im feeling this way about a lot of things lately.
reading, writing, solving
lyrics
minute cryptic
how to write s*x
skip & loafer
in thinking a lot about music ive also been trying to write something for a potential song. i tried to harness how phoebe bridgers songs have conversational and raw lyrics, almost like diary entries or voicemails youd leave a friend. while writing i got caught up in dad stuff.. i keep learning more and more things about my father that make trying to repair my relationship with him extremely hard. and its probably only hard from my POV, and probably nothing to him. i think i need to write about something lighter.
these past few weeks Rudy's been rewriting his comic and taking notes on this book about writing intimacy with prupose and direction within stories. how does that translate to comics? no idea, but it has been a minute since we bounced ideas off of each other and it feels good to get that quality time with him again. i should have made this blog about all the cool things hes up to and how i really am thankful to have him as my partner and i love him forever n ever. rudy glazing remains evergreen weeee
ive caught up with skip & loafer, its still a very sweet manga. hoping it gets a second season of the anime. there are a ton of manga i need to read but im just so slow to get into anything new...
one day rudy was watching an NL stream of him playing MInute Cryptic, it was hypnotizing. it reminded me of an internet of yore where youd come upon bizarre web or flash puzzle games. i remember playing the impossible quiz during summer school, and spending hours with my classmates over MSN messenger? ventrilo??? playing html anagram games... solving a cryptic totally feels like that, it itches a strange part of my brain, plus crosswords have become kind of dull in comparison. the exception being my favorite most infuriating crossword from the new yorker with a theme centered around typos/misspelled words. its torture. i loved it. minute cryptic is also a special type of torture in a way - ive bought their physical book and im about halfway through, of course im stuck.
sweets and junkfood
naked and afraid apocalypse
culiary class wars season 2
killdozer food challanges on youtube
nirvana the band the show // the movie
hades 2
my mom got fired just about a month ago and i think without me she would retreat into a lot of self sabotaging behaviors. im trying to keep her days structured and spend time with her watching a lot of her favorite bad reality TV shows. naked and afraid is particularly bad but its fun to watch drama unfold - its so counter to any actual survival techniques, its funny. culinary classwars is always fun to watch. i havent been exposed to much asian food programming outside of the original iron chef, but the editing and narrativces in CCW are so so so bad and silly. both venerable seonjae and hou deok-juk were among my favorite chefs; they both exude so much wisdom, humility and also light heartedness. i need to remember to always make room for vegetables in my life.
we started watching nirvana the band the show since rudys never seen it. its kind of a tough watch at times but its still so funny. i enjoyed the movie too. at first i was disappointed i didnt laugh more but i kept thinking back about certain scenes and wondering how everything was filmed. i seriously want to watch it a second time and im hoping they release a BTS or making of documentary or commentary or SOMETHINGggg. i love movies and friendship!!
killdozers youtube channel is purely my own junkfood. watching a man willfully avoid water for 3 days is really something else.
hades 2 on my huge ass ultra wide monitor is really great... i feel like i can see everything... im romancing moros... im staring respectfully....
strays
been having consistently vivid dreams lately. probably my medication. will not bore anyone with that.
i want to read frankenstein
weightloss and health is always in the back of my mind day in day out it is exhausting. still trying to fully unlearn using food as a coping mechanism
work is work is work. thinking about vacations all the time and it feels maladaptive
the future seems like a vast unknown frontier
a bit ago i had a dinner of canned beans and canned corn. whats more cowboy than that???
drawn by me, colored (and painted, and edited, etc!!!) by @rudycomics ! this will be available at anime expo artist alley table K43 as a medium sized print :) see you there!

for a long time i struggled with drawing up some kind of kirby merch because i couldn't get the perfect, clean, geometric shapes i wanted. so i went the other way and just did a bunch of organic nonsense and called it good.
