I’m cooking up fic ideas because I NEED more kibakabu to exist you don’t understand.

So far I have:

• A silly Modern (so basically Regular World) AU where Raihan is a popular streamer falling all over himself for his Hot Old DILF Neighbor (his chat bullies him fucking RELENTLESSLY)

• The beginnings of a Dragon AU (Tamer of Dragons Raihan and the weirdest old fire drake in the world)

• And also a Merman AU (merman Raihan… hes so LONG. Kabu is intrigued but also can he Please stop draping himself on me like that he’s so DAMP)

When it comes to canon I really want them to have a little camping trip and train together in the off season. Pokémon battle and cuddling up by the fire and cooking together….

I also think one of Raihan tagging along with Kabu to the gym is so funny because I KNOW his thought process goes “oh he’ll look so hot all sweaty like that i wonder if I can make a move in the locker room when we’re done” and then two hours later Raihan is wheezing and coughing and whining because “please please I can’t do any more don’t make me do another rep I’ll die Mr. Kabu please” because I KNOW his beanpole ass does NOT work out.

As soon as I finish replaying Omega Ruby I’m also thinking about piecing together a more interesting backstory for Kabu and then having them take a little Hoenn vacation. This one would Not be as lighthearted and fun as you would think and would in fact have a fair amount of pain. Sorry Kabu. Silly pretty boyfriend will be there with you for consolation and compensation though

Also incredibly important to me to note that Kabu is trans in all of these concepts. Including the one where he’s a dragon. Because he is and I said so.

Like COME ON. LOOK AT THEM. THEY’RE SILLY. THEY’RE INTERESTING. Also PLEASE LOOK AT THE HEIGHT DIFFERENCE. It’s so funny. Apparently Raihan is around 5’11” or 6’0” (measured based on him standing next to Duraludon in the lobby) and Kabu is. Around 5’3” MAYBE.

There’s also more serious things about them like Kabu absolutely admiring Raihan’s unwavering ambition and will. Raihan looking up to Kabu for his experience and his own passion (remnants of a silly little hero crush thing also, though they’re basically coworkers now). TOR-COLLEAGUES. Please there’s so much potential.

Was pondering about why I liked this ship so much aside from the veteran serious old man x laid back chill young man trope and I had some thoughts--

Dragons are commonly associated with fire especially in western cultures, so seeing a dragon type gym leader shipped with a fire type gym leader is really cute parallels???

It could have been so easy for Pokemon to write Kabu being a typical pokeboomer who doesn't understand kids and their rotomphones these days, and thus butts heads with the more chill, influencer Raihan. But no!! They're both so nice that they heavily respect, and even look up to the other!!!!

The height difference. Cute......

OMFG YES rookie trainer Raihan having a huge crush on Kabu back and even after years going by, Raihan still has a huge crush on his now colleague Kabu-- is my absolute fave trope and I'm surprised I haven't seen more fics exploring it

TO ADD ON TO THE BIT ABOUT THE FIRE AND DRAGON ASSOCIATION BECAUSE I AM INSANE ABOUT DRAGONS AND DRAGON SYMBOLISM.

Raihan’s eyes actually change to look more draconic when he Locks In for battling. Which I think is very cool of him. To me, he’s the tamer of dragons whose talent with them comes from understanding/having a similar temperament. Dragons are proud, regal creatures, and his confidence in his own strength suits that SO well. The goroawase for his numbers is actually “powerful,” after all.

Kabu’s reads as “sparks,” on that note, and “hibana” matching “Kibana” (Raihan’s OG name) makes me insane. It’s definitely not intended but I think it has very cute potential.

Kabu’s whole thing is that he’s a passionate man. The “Ever-Burning Man of Fire,” who blazed his trail from Hoenn to Galar, working his way to the top from the bottom more than once by sheer resolve. He knows what it’s like to get burned and he’s never let it stop him, even when he came close to losing that spark. “Always keep training, as long as you’re alive,” after all.

Maybe he burns hot and steady enough to take on even the dragon with the strongest scales, huh?

So basically. It’s taking every bit of strength I have to not collapse and make some sort of dragon AU for them.
