Youâd first seen Logan on your second day at Charles Xavierâs School for Gifted Youngsters. Youâd gotten your gifts just a few months before, and your parents- not knowing what else to do- sent you to the first place thatâd take you. It was after youâd finished moving into your room, on a tour from your new friend Rogue that youâd spotted a man leaning against the wall outside, smoking a cigar. He was good looking- rugged and intimidating. Rogue mustâve seen your distracted expression, because she huffed out a laugh, âYou curious about him? Thatâs Logan- Wolverine.â You just give her a smile in return, trying not to give away how much his handsome face struck you as you hummed, âHe seems nice.âÂ
When Logan first saw you, just a day later, he didnât think much. âNew cannon fodder, sheâs cute.â was about it. He had far too much brooding to do to care that much about you- not until you actually introduced yourself. You walked right up to him with a polite smile, offering him your hand and giving him your name. Logan shook it, smirking at you. You were sweet. He could tell you were nervous by your heartbeat, his heightened senses picking up on it through your hand. He didnât think much of it, most people were nervous talking to him- especially for the first time.Â
As you grew more accustomed to life at Xavierâs, you felt your feelings for Logan growing. He was charming and strongwilled, the type of man who put your nerves at ease- knowing heâd be there in case anything bad happened. He was never rough towards you, never yelled or got angry, not that you gave him any reason to. You felt like he liked you. Like the soft way he talked to you was special treatment- something just for you.Â
You were strong on your own- you could carry yourself in a battle, and youâd been able to keep up in training- but youâd never been one to enjoy fighting. You didnât like yelling, hitting and getting hit, causing harm, but you did like protecting those less fortunate, and you knew you wanted to dedicate yourself to doing so. That was where Loganâs power really shined. He was an amazing fighter- it was satisfying watching him leap across the danger room, having no issue taking down any simulated threat he was faced with.Â
Sadly, your schoolgirl crush was- well, crushed, when you saw the man interact with Jean. It was after a group training that you saw him flirtatiously leaning on the woman. You were paired with Rogue once again, and she watched with pity as you stared at the two of them. âOh, sugarâŚâ She muttered, a hand resting on your upper back. You shook off your sad expression, trying to convince her (and yourself) that it didnât matter much to you. âWhatâs that tone for?â You ask, smiling at her, âLetâs get back to work.âÂ
Your poor acting skills didnât work on Rogue of course, and after training the two of you found some time alone in her room to properly debrief. âCâmon honey, you donât have to pretend with me, I could practically see your heart breaking.â She said as the two of you sat on her comfy bed. You knew there was no use in pretending, and felt yourself tearing up. âHow long have those two been a thing? I thought Jean liked ScottâŚâ You whined. Rogue sighs, running her hand through her hair. âEver since Iâve known those three, theyâve had a weird love triangle goinâ. Scott and Logan have this whole âwhoâs the real man thatâs gonna win her heartâ thing. I shouldâve warned you- I just didnât want to stick my nose in where it didnât belong.â
You take a deep breath, trying to steel yourself. It made sense- you were being too optimistic in thinking you had a chance, you werenât anywhere near as used to the raunchy, hook-up style of romance that Logan exhibited. Nothing made you feel more lame than hearing about his escapades from a gossiping student or peer. You look up, seeing Rogue looking at you with a worried expression and quickly straighten your back. âIt shouldnât be that big of a deal, really. I mean it was just a little crush! I can get over it.â You assure her. She just raises an eyebrow, not quite believing you.Â
That night, you were looking out your dorm window when you spotted Jean and Logan outside. They were having a heated conversation, his big hand on her waist. You tell yourself you shouldnât eavesdrop, that snooping was bad, but you knew there really wasnât much of an argument. You kneeled down under the window so as to not be spotted, and paused the show you had been watching on your phone.Â
You couldnât make out much, but what you did hear, you resented. âCâmon Jeanie, why spend any time with that boyscout?â You heard Logan say. Jean responded with a sweet tone in her voice, âI told you, Logan, youâre wild, unpredictable. I couldnât settle down with you.â You feel a small bit of hope in your heart- but that was quickly crushed at Loganâs response. âI can change. Iâll be someone you can settle down with, Jeanie. I can be your little boyscout.âÂ
You werenât sure why, but that sentiment hurt more than anything else that had gone on that day. The fact that he was willing to change- to domesticate himself for someone, and that someone wasnât you, was painful. You didnât hear anything after that, and when you peeked up from the window, you understood why. They were kissing, his hands on her back and her hands cupping his face. You slumped back down onto the ground and turned away from the window with a bitter taste in your mouth.
The next morning you saw Logan in the kitchen. He smiled, turning to you as he opened his bottle of soda. âMorninââ He greeted, clearly in a good mood. You gave him a quiet nod, trying to act natural despite the way your heart was stuck down in your stomach. He picks up on your somber attitude, tilting his head slightly, âRough night? You look like shit.â âWow, thanks, thatâs exactly what I wanted to hear.â You think, knowing better than to complain, you just swallow the lump in your throat and say, âYeah, I forgot to sleep- I got too into my show.âÂ
Logan watched as you trudged out of the kitchen with a quickly made bowl of cereal in your hands. He was worried- to say the least. He did care for you, youâd made a good impression on him. Never annoying or prodding, always kind in a way he could only dream of being. Your vulnerability was something he envied. He may be good at fighting people, but you could comfort a crying child or solve a dispute between two preteen students with ease. Seeing you upset was one thing, but seeing you upset and quiet? Now that was another.Â
You knew deep down that Jean wasnât a bad person. You had no real reason to be so angry with her- she couldnât help what she felt, but neither could you. That gross, slimy feeling of jealousy coated you when you saw her. She was so effortlessly gorgeous, her hair was perfectly styled, she was so powerful and kind- and worst of all she was kind to you as well, oblivious to the feelings of resentment you carried deep in your soul.Â
As much as everything hurt, you knew you couldnât stay like this. You didnât want to stay stagnant, mourning a man you built up in your head- mourning a man in general. So, you started to get back on your feet. It was slow at first, you accepted Rogueâs invitations to hang out, talking through your feelings and finding meaningful distractions in the movie nights and sleepovers youâd have with her. Then you left the mansion, going to the mall with Jubilee and Kitty, then accompanying Kurt on his walks around the schoolâs gardens, then watching Hank as he worked in his lab- soon you found yourself regaining the color in your face. You could stand to be in the same room as Jean, though you kept your distance for both of your sakes.
A couple months went by and you had distracted yourself with your own life. You still liked Logan- and you were still hurt every time you saw him and Jean walk down the halls together, but you were more sure of yourself now. You had friends, you had underclassmen who were depending on you, and you had a job on the X-Men to honor. Things were peaceful, and you were growing happy with your life in the mansion. However, in one day, the fragile foundation in which your contentment was built was completely turned upside-down.Â
It was a quiet day in the mansion, you were in your room watching a movie Kitty had recommended to you when you heard Charles Xavierâs voice ringing through your head. âCome to my office, now.â He said, voice stern and bordering on frantic. You picked yourself up off your bed and rushed to his office, not minding that you were still in your pajamas.Â
By the time youâd made it, Charles was sitting at his desk, hands clasped together. Scott Summers was there as well. You were hardly surprised, youâd never really seen him without Charles or Jean somewhere nearby. He gave you a nod in greeting before turning to Charles. âSo, what did you call us in here for?â He asked. Charles looked at him with a serious expression. âJean and Logan have been taken.âÂ
You and Scott share a bewildered look, and he leans in intently. âWhat? What do you mean, âtakenâ? How? When?â He questions. Charles sighs, eyebrows furrowed. âApparently the two of them were⌠taking a stroll outside last night when the perpetrator swooped by and took them. From what I was able to pick up, it was Mystique disguised as one of us. I have their location, and Iâm trusting you to go bring them back.â He said, and before you could ask any more questions, he slid a folder across the desk. âThis file contains their location and everything I know about the organization. Time is of the essence. Mystique isnât there right now, so hurry before she returns. Go suit up.â He explained. You hesitated for a moment, caught off guard by the sudden whirlwind of information, but Scott just turned on his heel and left, leaving you to run after him.
After suiting up, the two of you head to the mansionâs aircraft hangar of a garage, not quite sure what to take on your mission. âWe should take something on the road, not a jet. Itâs a good idea to try and go stealthy.â Scott says, glancing over to the many cars in the space. He looks back at you, tilting his head. âAnything catching your eye? Iâm not taking my car on this trip- donât want it to get scuffed.â You hum, looking around the hangar before your gaze falls on a motorcycle in the corner- Loganâs motorcycle. Scottâs gaze follows yours, eyes widening. âWe shouldnât⌠thatâs his prized possession.â He says, walking up to it beside you. You smirk, âThat didnât stop him from taking your car out for a joyride.â The two of you sit in silence for a second before Scott grins. â...Letâs do it.âÂ
Meanwhile, Logan and Jean were being kept in the basement of an unsuspectingly dingy farmhouse in the outskirts of the upper New York neighborhood the X-Mansion is located in. The two of them had given up trying to escape their captivity as their capturer took the time to create a cage that nullifies Jeanâs powers and bound Loganâs hands. Jean was trying in vain to focus and see if anyone was on their way to save them while Logan leaned against the wall, staring at the ceiling.Â
You and Scott played a quick round of rock-paper-scissors to see who got to drive Loganâs prized motorcycle, and you won. So, the two of you put on your helmets and hopped on the ride. Scott wrapped his arms around your waist from the back, his grip on you firm. It only tightened when you sped off, making him yelp in surprise. âCareful!â He shouts over the wind, âWe have to actually make it there to save them!â You giggle, the adrenaline of the ride getting to you as you reach back quickly to pat the side of his face. âWeâll be fine! Just be brave!â You yell back, and you swear you hear him whine as he rests his head on your shoulder.Â
Scottâs heart was pounding out of his chest by the time the two of you arrived on site. He holds out his hand for you to take as you disembarked the ride, smiling up at him. âThat was not how we were trained to ride.â He states, still catching his breath. The two of you take off your helmets, and you see his eyes sparkle through his visor, âIt was pretty fun though.âÂ
The two of you peek into the farmhouse through a crack in the panelling. You donât see much, a lot of dirt and wood, but upon further inspection you see a lever buried under a pile of hay in the corner. Scott leads you into the barn, staying silent and on guard as he kneels in front of the lever. âYou ready?â He asks, and you nod, bracing yourself as he pulls the switch.Â
The floor starts to shake and the two of you watch in shock as a whole half of the barn slowly descends into a lower level, the rural scenery melting into metallic technological walls surrounding you. By the time the giant elevator stills, youâre in a labyrinth of hallways, three armed guards there to greet you.Â
You and Scott make quick work of the watchmen, and Scott interrogates one for Jean and Loganâs location, getting some vague directions he memorizes instantly. As you fight your way down the halls with him, you canât help but feel battle chemistry youâd never experienced before. You were always a bit intimidated by Scott- Charles Xavierâs right hand man, the leader, the golden boy- youâd always heard he was some strict boyscout, but he truly surprised you in the way he fought. He seemed to instinctively know what to do to uplift you as you battled beside him. Whether it be blasting down a bot that was sneaking up on you, or offering a hand when you stumbled, he was right there when you needed him.Â
Scott appreciated your fighting style as well. You were a good enough fighter, strong and capable- but what really got him was that you had no issue listening to his instructions. Heâd fought with one too many overconfident mutants who thought they knew better than him, and you werenât one of them. You trusted him enough to let him call the shots, and he trusted you enough to know youâd follow through his commands well. At one point in the fight, he called out for you to target a few guards on the right of him, and you responded with a, âYes, sir!â that made him feel a bit warm. He decided not to think too much into his reaction to such a simple title though, trying to focus himself on the fight instead.
You managed to clear the area, continuing your run down the now deserted halls. You catch Scott taking a deep breath, shaking his head in thought. âYou okay?â You ask, leaning over to get a better view of his face. âIâm sure theyâre alright.â Scott nods, huffing a silent laugh. âI know they are. Honestly, Iâm just steeling myself to see Logan and Jean together. I canât stand that guy.â Now, that was something you could relate to. âI know the feeling.â You reassure. Scott glances at you, eyebrow raised. âWhat? I thought you liked Logan.â You frown. âYeah. I do.â Scott nods in sudden understanding, finding some solidarity in your uncharacteristically bitter tone. He puts a hand on your shoulder as the two of you stop in front of the door that supposedly holds your (sort of) friends and says, âWeâll be fine. Just be brave.âÂ
The door hisses open, revealing a large monitor room. You get rid of all the guards on duty, peering down through a big glass pane above the cell to see Logan and Jean, sitting in silence. Scott peers at the control panel below the window, speculatively pressing a button that disarms the anti-power forcefield around the two. They look up instantly, seeing the two of you as you wave down to them.
Logan and Jean rush up to you and Scott from their position in the cage, relief painting their faces. Jean hugs Scott, whispering something you couldnât quite make out to him. You just kind of stood there, awkwardly watching as Scott pats her back. Logan turns to you, âSo, howâd you get all the way out here?â He asks, and you and Scott share a look. âUhâŚâ You start, not quite knowing what to say. You stare at each other for a second, and you honestly think youâd be laughing your ass off if you werenât simultaneously fearing for your life.Â
Eventually, the four of you manage to make your way back to the mansion. Logan rides his bike back (not without threatening to kill Scott for ten minutes straight), and Jean uses her powers to signal for Kurt to come teleport the rest of you home. Despite Loganâs angry reaction, you and Scott couldnât stop smiling at each other, relishing the feeling of a mission gone well. Jean and Logan noticed the little friendship the two of you struck up immediately. The second Logan arrived home and saw the two of you laughing over a bowl of popcorn, he felt a pure rage in him that tugged at the darkest parts of his heart.Â
Logan knew the feeling of jealousy well. Heâd been feeling it ever since heâd seen Scott interact with Jean- but this? This was worse. Heâd never felt territorial over you because he never had to. You were always there, always smiling at him, always kind⌠but now here you were, laughing with his rival and looking at him like he was the funniest man on Earth. This was so much more intense than anything heâd felt before. He liked Jean, sure, but he knew sheâd never really give him the time of day. Part of him didnât want her to. He liked the chase. You werenât someone he was willing to play around with, though.Â
Not one to lurk, Logan marched right up to the kitchen island you two were sitting at, standing beside you. âWhat are you guys talking about?â He asks pointedly. Scott glances at you, not happy about the way Logan was interrupting your conversation, âNothing.â He states, mood soured. Logan smiles, âGood. âCause I still need to beat your ass for taking my bike out. Danger room. 10 Minutes.â He says, before leaving the two of you in silence. Scott scowls, not wanting to leave, but never being one to turn down a duel. He gives you a nod and stands up, walking out of the room.Â
You sit in contemplation for a while, before deciding to make your way down to the danger room as well- thinking it may be good sportsmanship considering Scott was in trouble over something you proposed. You arrive at the viewing room where you spot Jean observing them. âI went to go see Scott and he filled me in. Logan seems angry.â She says simply. âYeah- I mean maybe taking his motorcycle out for a ride wasnât the best idea on my partâŚâ You say. Jean shakes her head, smiling softly. âItâs not that, you know.â At your confused expression she continues. âLogan likes you. In a different way than how he likes me.â She says.
âWhat are you talking about?â You ask. Sitting beside her as the two men begin their sparring downstairs. âLogan has no issue being flirtatious with me because he knows deep down that thereâs no stakes in it. Heâs not scared of scaring me off.â You donât seem to be all that convinced, watching Jean as she fiddles with her hands. âI remember talking to him one night, right after he first talked to you. I asked him what he thought of you- and if it was anyone else, heâd make some sort of quippy joke. Say you were stupid or annoying or that you wouldnât last long, but he didnât say anything like that. He said you were nice.â Jean looks up at you, a hint of vulnerability in her eyes youâd never seen before. âI never liked Logan. Not like that- but he was there when Scott wasnât. When I was lonely. Iâve never wanted to be with him, Iâve only ever actually wanted Scott⌠and I know Logan has only ever actually wanted you. Heâs just not good at saying it.â
The two of you sit in silence for a bit, watching Logan land a particularly strong hit on Scott. You werenât certain you believed Jean, but you didnât think she was the type of person to lie. She was too virtuous for that. You were trying to find the words to respond when she whispered. âPlease donât take Scott from me.â You were going to laugh but decided against it when you looked up and saw her solemn expression. âWhat are you talking about?â Jean buried her head in her hands. âI could feel it- I could feel it when you rescued us, he was flustered. I know Iâve been flaky with him in the past- I know Iâve spent too much time with Logan, I was just scared of⌠of committing to him.âÂ
You had a lot of things you wanted to say- that Scott was never going to choose you over Jean, that she was amazing and great, that you still didnât believe Logan would ever see you the same way you saw him, but you focused on being there for her instead. âWhy are you scared of that?â You ask, putting a hand on hers. âI have no control over my powers. I havenât been able to go a full month without completely turning my room upside down in my sleep. Scott would only be hurt being with me.â She says, and you hear the quiver in her voice. âIâm not like you. Youâre so⌠soft. You can be taken care of, you can be relied on. Iâm a loose cannon.âÂ
In all the time you spent thinking about Jean, it never came to your mind that sheâd ever be thinking about you. She was strong and beautiful and always clearing you in training- and when you told her that, she just sniffled, wiping her tears. âIâm sorry,â She said, trying to pull herself together. âI feel so silly.â You squeeze her hand a bit, âEverything youâre saying is something Iâve felt before too. If youâre silly, then so am I.â You admit. Jean pulls you into a hug, leaning her head on her shoulder, saying, âIâll talk to Logan for you, okay? Iâve been getting impatient waiting for him to get his act together. Though I guess I should get mine together too.âÂ
You and Jean were so distracted by your heart-to-heart that you completely forgot to pay any attention to Logan and Scott, who had just called their spar quits in confusion after seeing the two of you hugging and tearing up. They rushed up the stairs to the viewing room, opening the door and scaring the two of you away from each other. âAre you guys okay?â Scott asks, clutching his arm that Logan mustâve hit hard. You and Jean stare at each other before she responds with a smile, âYeah, weâre okay.âÂ
A couple days later, you were in your room when you heard a knock on the door. Answering it, you saw Logan sheepishly standing there, a bag in his hand. âI brought these donuts from that one diner you liked.â He says, holding out the bag to you. âLet me in. I gotta talk to you.âÂ
You take the bag from Logan, moving aside and letting him in. âThanks for rescuing me the other day.â He mutters, sitting on your bed. âEven if you took my bike.â You sit beside him, looking into the bag. âNo problem, Iâm just glad youâre okay.â You respond. Logan looks at your wall where youâd taped a bunch of pictures you and your friends had taken over the course of your time at Xavierâs. âI talked to Jean yesterday.â He finally says. âShe told me you liked me.âÂ
âYou already knew that.â You say under your breath. âI did.â He remarks, reminding you he had heightened senses. âI was being a coward. Youâre too sweet, you know that? Everyone else has found a way to piss me off at least once, but youâre the type of girl I could see myself spending the rest of my immortal life with.â His statement makes you blush, not knowing what to say you let him continue, âIâm not good at being soft. Iâm better at being an asshole and telling anyone who canât keep up toâŚ- well-â He grumbles, âPoint being, you make me feel a whole bunch of things Iâm not able to handle. But when I was talking to Jean I realized you were probably hurting, and Iâd rather make a fool of myself trying to explain how much I like you than lose you completely.âÂ
You didnât know what to say. You barely believed Logan liked you when you heard it from Jean, yet hereâs the man of the hour telling it to you himself. You wanted to get mad, to tell him youâd been waiting all this time, to scold him for making you so sad these past few months, but you just couldnât. Not when he was sitting there beside you, looking so crestfallen. âI couldnât stand seeing you with Scott.â He admits, finally looking you in the eyes. âHe pisses me off, he really does. Heâs good at being nice. Heâs taller than you even when you wear those ridiculously high boots. He looks good with everyone. When I told Jean that she laughed and said she thinks thatâs how you felt seeing me with her. I told her that was ridiculous.âÂ
âNot that far off actually.â You hum, propping your chin up on your palm. âIâm sorry.â Logan says again, tentatively holding your other hand. âItâs always been you. It had to be you ever since you first shook my hand.â You donât respond right away, and he sighs, looking down at his feet before bringing your hand up to his mouth and kissing it. âIâll love you if you forgive me and Iâll love you if you say you never want to hear from me again.â He says into your fist, his voice uncharacteristically quiet. He stands up, letting go of you slowly, and walks out of the room, leaving you with a âGood night. You know where to find me.â
