Instead of 2 block outs and a key art poster, I have done kinda ready mockups for both my block outs.
Assignment: Character Design Part 3
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Feedback: I'm trying work on a poster for this game but I can't decide between the two. I think the 1st one is very interesting but the 2nd one feels a lot more "alive." Help. Moodboard:
Assignment: Character Design Part 2
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Description: Somewhere at the cross section of western comic strips and exaggerated anime emotes, sits Chipper. Wearing her heart on her sleeve and thoughts on her face, Chipper is an open book. Her emotes per minute could go up against a sloth's breathing rate.
She walks with confidence and remains unfazed by whatever life throws at her, except when the thing being thrown is a textbook in her face.
Not all books are created equal, you know.
And that's why reading anything other than fiction can tamper with the settings of her brain, which are set to sleepy by default.
Feedback: I would love to go over my line art one more time on the poses but other than that it's everything I wanted it to be. I think it might be fun to add some more expressions and see how much I can push the comedic value of my panels (stretch goal).
First piece of key art for my thesis narrative game, Chipper & Holmes!
Assignment: Character Design Part 1
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Description: On tonight's episode of "I didn't do my assignment right but, hey, maybe that's a good thing...please? (Part 2)" I present to you Chipper-- an average middle-school kid with a savior complex. This 12-year-old is basically trouble in a skater skirt. Always ready to fix a problem or throw a joke at it, she wears her hair in a ponytail. If she can tame that mess, she can do anything.
Chipper fancies herself a hero. The kind who go on great adventures and save pretty boys from scary monsters. A closeted optimist, refusing to accept a boring reality.
Refusing to deal with the death of her dog, Chipper's brain traps her in a fantasy of saving her dog from an otherworldly monster. Therefore, we have a regular version and a super-sona.
Her songs: Punkrocker by Teddybears ft Iggy Pop, Kyokansarenakutemoiijanai by Rie Takahashi, Heart Attack by Chuu
Since this is a comic strip, there is only so much real estate in each panel so I wanted to use bright colours to really make her pop against any background. Another major point of consideration here is that this is for a 100% hand-drawn game being developed by someone whose greatest strength is not drawing but isn't that the point of all this?
Feedback: Now that I see it, the scale of the front view in the first image is a bit off, compared to the others.
I'm sure it could be more polished but then that defeats the whole idea of a kinda rough/sketchy comic vibe that aligns with the personality and perspective of this character.

I realize now that I might have (most definitely) strayed from the assignment brief. BUT blocking out these 3 versions of the character of Death is something I had been putting off for a while so.......happy accident, maybe? :')
Assignment: Environment Design Part 2
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Description: The antagonist's throne room, setting for the final confrontation.
Since this world changes based on the protagonists perspective and internal conflict, this part of the world is meant to be the setting for a final confrontation/boss fight between the hero and the antagonist. Since the hero doesn't have much information about the antagonist, she perceives them as a villain in a fantastical adventure. At the same time, there need to be some elements of how the antagonist perceives themself since they too are being observed at the moment. So, I chose the following keywords to harmonize them: evil, just, balance, brutal and hollow.
Feedback: I think one of the pillars (right) needs to be adjusted for perspective and I would like to experiment a bit more with floor colours. While the textures and the greens and greys help sell the coldness of the character, the reds and yellows add the warmth that needs to be a part of the thematic wrap-up.
I thought about filling the room with more props like weapons, furniture and decoration but that doesn't align with the overall art direction of the project. I wonder what other ways I could employ to make it feel more "lived in."

So, I chose the following keywords to harmonize them: evil, just, balance, brutal and hollow.
Feedback: Of the two versions, I prefer the 1st one (on the left) since it looks a lot more cinematic. I also like the way the lines are leading towards the throne, while giving a sense of distance and space.
On the other hand, the 2nd image might make the antagonist look more menacing if they were sitting in that throne, which would defeat the purpose of this particular sequence within the themes of the narrative.
In my thesis game, Cocco, players can choose from 3 charms to attach to the player character's backpack. For this assignment, I have sketched 2 versions of a backpack charm.
The logo of a pet store in a world much like our own, only brighter and prone to change based on the perspective of the one being observed. Since the current protagonist is a 12-year-old, comic-book obsessed gamer, the world swings between high-abstraction comic art setting and saturated, pixel-art game environment.

Assignment: Making Many From Few
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Description: A set of little creatures, expressions and dorky accessories.
Feedback: In a world where I could control time, this would look like a magical girl dress-up game. Since that wasn't happening, I struggled to find some other way to approach this without locking myself into it for 7-8 hours. After spiraling for a bit I remembered the evolution cycle of digimon and bam! There it was--something that would fit the bill, and be easy to animate if (when) I chose to use it for a project. While I don't think the design is some out-of-this-world unique thing, it is versatile enough to work as an accessory in a number of game/creative capacities. I do think I could have exaggerated the mouth to make it feel more distinct but, at the same time, I didn't want it to take focus away from the eyes--which I think is what really sells it.
My oldest OC was a clumsy, chaotic witch (surprise, surprise). I wanted to make slice-of-life comics about her. This is kinda what the comic would look like.
Assignment: Patterns from Particles
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Description: Visualizing the joy of seeing your favorite dog.
Feedback: Since my thesis has a visual identity similar to that of a combination of hand-drawn American comic strips and Japanese slice-of-life manga & anime, my approach to this assignment was more in line with those mediums. In-game, this would look like an animated background within an otherwise static rectangular comicbook panel. The most important aspect of the game is the bond between the player character and her dog so I decided to feed two birds with one feeder.
Also (!!!) I can use these sprites separately in other moments. Re-using assets. Clara would be proud.
For once, I'm actually quite satisfied with what I ended up with but if I could go back and change one thing (which I totally can and probably will), I would like to add a splash of green, with bows on bones [(say that 10 times) (what a fun set of words!)].
But I have no idea what's up with this export--the shift in values is not my doing but it looks nice so I'll take the win.
Assignment: A fantastical packaging for the element 'air'
Tools: iPad, Procreate
Description: A marble bottle that looks like a cloud nymph blowing air into a bubble with her magical pipe.
Assignment 4: Pixelizing Monstrosities
Tools: Piskel and my trusty mouse!
Description: Turning Gamursamon from last week's sketch into pixelized versions (8x8, 16x16 & 32x32)
Feedback: I think I might have gotten a little too attached to this little creature. That's probably why I didn't even consider changing her colour palette to something with a higher contrast between its hues. I wish I had played around with it a bit more before committing to just different shades of purple.
While my priority for all versions was to make sure the shape of her torso, D-pad tail and joystick ears was conveyed clearly, I don't think this particular pose added any value to the silhouette. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure what kind of pose I could have used in service of iconography. To what extent could I exaggerate her stubby limbs? It makes me wonder if the better solution would be to rework the silhouette of her torso into something more unique. OR! Maybe in this fictional scenario where she's a creature in a game, this pose is specific to her and with enough time and repetition, this silhouette will read Gamursamon--like her cousin Snorlax.

Assignment: A fantastical meal
Name: Ruby Papdi Chaat
Description: A beloved street food from North India, featuring papdi (wheat crackers) topped with boiled potatoes, chickpeas, chutneys (mint and tamarind) and whipped, sweetened yogurt. Making it extra special is a synthetic ruby garnish.
Assignment 3: Industry from Biology
Tools: Procreate, iPad
Description: Inspired by the form of a Triceratops and a Volkswagen Beetle, is this little flying car.
Feedback: For this assignment, I wanted to focus on practicing 2-point perspective with something smaller, simpler and easier to move around in space. Instead, I ended up with a flying, dino car. Complete with it's Ion thrusters for electric propulsion and a Flux Capacitor for wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff.
While blocking out the form of the car was fun, taking that and putting it into 2-point perspective was where most of the challenges lied, especially while working on the details. I do wish I had spent some more time on adding more details and fixing the line art. I still can't get the inside right.
