Assignment Name: Pixeling Monstrosities

Desc: Pixelized renderings of my fantasy creature Catreat under 4 different constraints.

Feedback: I genuinely really liked how these came out. The 8x8 and 16x16 ones were hard, as it felt like conveying the cat aspect without making it look almost fox like was a bit difficult, but I still think I pulled it off nicely enough and they came out cute. My 32x32 ones are definitely my favorites, as I felt like I really got down the features that make my creature the way it is. I tried to mainly avoid black outlines for most of my renderings since I’m used to that style, and I really like how it gave off a completely different vibe (especially the 4 color vs. no color limit 32x32). Though I will say because of that, I had to make Catreat’s fur more cream than off-white for the no color limit so it could be read better against the white background, though honestly I don’t mind it at all.

Feedback: It’s really difficult to create the 8x8 and the 16x16 ones. If i was to do it again I might change the proportions and make the animals face bigger to get more details.

Assignment 4: Pixelizing Monstrosities

Based off of last week's sketchbook creature, a croissant-shelled hermit crab. Reflection: I think for this week's assignment, it was an interesting process having to work from the most simplified version of an artwork, and slowly for each version, given more freedom to add details. It was definitely hard for the first two versions, having to sculpt the shape with such little amount of pixels, but still be able to make the object represent (somewhat) of its original form. For the first edition, it was a bit difficult due to the complex shape of the character, and the limitation of color and values had to be used to give the simple shapes more dimension. Even with the later versions with more colors and bigger canvas, it still felt limiting. With the final full colored and biggest canvas, it was satisfying to have autonomy over the color range and more canvas room to work on, but I realized that I had to be more aware of how pixel art is different from regular digital art, in the way that the way that it is applied is way different, (not really sure how to describe it) but sometimes details can be more distracting and look crowded.

Assignment 4: Pixelizing Monstrosities

Tools: Asesprite, wacom tablet

Description: Incandenza Vociferans sprites

Feedback: Unfortunately, I hated my monster from the previous assignment, but there's only one way through that problem: forward. Rounded elements are tricky here, as is the fundamental glass/lightbulb texture of the creature. It was unclear at first whether I should "fill" the body with color or leave it transparent, but at a small enough scale the transparent is unreadable and at a larger scale it's not "enough" of a drawing.
