It was a peaceful afternoon by server standards. The sun hung overhead in a golden haze, and the quiet was broken only by the occasional cough from a certain ginger head female
Gem, wrapped in a thick blanket, sat slumped beside Pearl on the porch of their base. Her voice had gone croaky and nasally after a rough few days, and she was currently sipping hot beetroot soup while Pearl kept guard over the trap-filled front lawn. Grian stood nearby, fiddling with some of the TNT and signs
âI mean, it shouldâve worked,â he muttered, mostly to himself. âAll the timing was right, and the TNT was rigged perfectâŚâ
Pearl raised a brow. âDidnât Scar walk over the pressure plates earlier, though? Didnât blow up?â
Grian scoffed, throwing his hands in the air. âYeah, thatâs the weird part! Scar strolled right across the whole thing, likeâlike he had some kind of plot armour the trap just fizzled! TNT blew, sure, but the sand never fell. It was likeâlike the trap took a nap mid-process!â
Gem coughed again âThatâs because you wired it with your sleep-deprived brain, probably.â
âExcuse me,â Grian sniffed. âIt was a flawless design in theory.â
âYou mean like your last four traps?â Pearl teased.
âThose donât countâ!â
Hey, Grian!â a voice called brightly from across the grass.
He perked up instantly, head snapping toward the familiar sound. You were jogging toward him with a smile that could burn down empires â not that youâd ever need to. You were already his favorite person in this world, and the past ones, too.
His heart warmed at the sight of you happily walking towards him, waving. He waved back, a little too enthusiastically.
And thatâs when it happened.
Your foot tapped a pressure plate, and you blinked, confused as the ground hissed beneath you.
The sand vanished. You yelped, plunging into the darkness below.
The explosion didnât echo long, but the silence that followed felt like it lasted a lifetime.
âOh my godâdid I just kill them?â Grian asked, his voice cracking, eyes wide in horror.
Gem, still wrapped in her blanket cocoon, slowly turned her head to Grian.
In the most deadpan, nasally, judgmental voice possible, she croaked,
âOh no, Grian⌠what did you do.â
I justâ I JUST FIXED THE WIRING LAST MINUTE AS A JOKE!â Grian shouted, panic rising in his voice. âI didnât think anyone was gonna ACTUALLYâ!â
He ran over to the hole, practically tripping over himself in his haste, and dropped to his knees at the edge. Smoke still curled from the center, faint items floating in the crater from your inventory.
Grian let out the most pathetic whimper imaginable.
Pearl gently patted his shoulder. âOof. Thatâs, uh⌠gonna be a tough conversation later.â
Gem sniffled. âYâknow⌠if I were them, Iâd respawn just to kill you back.â
Etho who seemly come out of nowhere nodded. âYeah. Grian trap-killing his own partner might be the most the villains thing thatâs ever happened.â
Grian just give Etho a Deadpan look
Scar was locked in an intense battle.
Not with a mob, not with another player.
But with a crafting table.
âOkay⌠sticks go here⌠and the string goes⌠no, no, thatâs a fishing rod. Ugh! Why does it always look like a fishing rod?!â he groaned, dragging the string around wildly. âCâmon, I just want to make a bow! A bow, not a net for fish feelings!â
Suddenly â
poof
You respawned in your bed with the soft chime of re-entry.
Scar didnât even turn around at first. âHey, welcome back! Waitâwere you even gone? Or am I losing it again? Etho says Iâm always losing it but I think Iâm justââ
You were sitting up slowly on the bed, disheveled, skin still slightly singed around the edges, bits of gravel in your hair. Your eyes were wide, staring at nothing. You hadnât even looked at him.
ââŚWhat just happened,â you said, voice soft, almost dazed.
Scar blinked. âUhhh. Thatâs a big question. Likeâphilosophically?â
Still not looking at him.
Scar gently set the half-bow-half-fishing-rod monstrosity aside, slowly approaching like someone trying not to spook a wild animal. âDid⌠someone kill you?â
Then, finally, you turned toward him.
