The reason astral projection is an airbending technique is because air as an element is considered one with spirit. In many languages, the words for air, breath and spirit are all the same or have the same root. Hebrew has ruach (breath/spirit) and Greek has pneuma (air/wind/spirit). In European and Judeo-Christian tradition and literature, breathing on someone is seen as a means of anointing them with one’s own spirit. In Doctor Who, the ninth Doctor invokes this idea when he offers delegates from many different worlds “the breath from [his] lungs” as a peace offering. In the Chronicles of Narnia, Aslan imbues his followers with strength by breathing on them–a direct reference to the times in the Bible when Jesus Christ did the same to His disciples. The fact that spirituality is basically inextricable from airbending is also why airbending is the only one of the bending arts that can diminish if the bender loses their spirituality. All the other elements stay as strong as they were–though fire, which is also dependent on the breath, does suffer a loss of versatility and finesse.
