I see a lot of disagreement on what the Pokemon currency is called, so I want to throw my hat into the ring here on the subject.
In the Japanese games, of course, the symbol used is just ε- The kanji for 'yen'. It's not a fantasy currency, it's just bog-standard normal Earth money. The localizations, however, give us a different character- Much like $ to mean dollar, it gives us a new symbol, a P with two horizontal lines through it. This denotes it is not a real-world currency.
In many works of Japanese fiction, such as Capcom's entire library of games or the Dragon Ball series, fictional money often is given the name 'Zeni' or 'Zenny', from an archaic Japanese coinage. In works that use this, though, oftentimes one zeni is considered equal to one yen.
With the P symbol for Pokemon's currency, though, we can do better: A general rule of thumb for estimation of value is 1 yen = 0.01 USD. Combined with the name of 'zennies' and 'the P symbol, we can draw a simple conclusion:
The currency of the Pokemon world is called 'Pennies'.
