Not after he followed Bakugo their whole lives. Feeling so inspired because of him. Conciously picking up his mannerisms.
Not when he’s thouroughly watched Bakugo since they were kindergarteners. Greedily stashing away every little thing about him even outside of heroism. Hiding behind a damn tree and watching him—literally going ‘Wow...’
Saying Bakugo was so brilliant to him it blinded him.
Not after going absolutely batshit genuinely RABID insane in a way he has for no one else twice when he thought Bakugo was dead. Even screaming bloody murder on the ground like someone died when Bakugo was kidnapped.
Not when even the villains knew Bakugo has always had a throne in Izuku’s heart to the point that they would bring specifically him up just to get a rise out of Izuku.
Not when he said “It’s because you’re who I picture when I think of victory.” to Bakugo.
NOT AFTER “for the rest of our lives” DAMMIT.
I’m not saying they need to be canon or that I ever thought they would be but It’s not strange to think so.
Izuku’s passionate (yes, passionate) adoration and love for Bakugo is canon because like everyone knew the girl would get the boy, everyone in and out of the manga/show knows that Midoriya Izuku loves Bakugo Katsuki—Izuku makes sure of it.
And bro don’t even get me started on Bakugo’s feelings for Izuku...

the deku that only ever looked at katsuki with an awestricken, admirable expression. the deku that was so obsessed with katsuki.
katsuki was deliberately targeted by the villains because of this… I liked that deku was flawed in this way. that he prioritized someone in his life that was awful to him in the past. it’s one of the things that made him so interesting! that he was SO hopeful and so determined to be friends with katsuki again. (it added a comedic contrast to their dynamic too. like ‘wow he still wants this guy in his life so badly despite the bullying?’ YES.)
deku fans, deku haters, EVERYONE used to have something to say about his katsuki obsession. it was a repeated, central discussion for YEARS. even in parodies by non-shippers, deku’s katsuki obsession was constantly poked fun at. even if you hated bkdk you couldn’t deny how dedicated deku was to katsuki.
I made this blog to talk about language because I find it fun and fascinating, so while I'm not thrilled to acknowledge 431 any more than I have to, there's really hilarious shit happening in this scene and the people need to know.
So, the first fucking thing we hear outta Katsuki's mouth is this:
"Jeez, why the hell do I gotta be Deku's private little chauffeur!"
There are a few ways you could translate this. It's an indignant complaint with some rudeness, but comparatively mild for Katsuki. Some people might rephrase this to something more like "why do I gotta drive Deku's ass around" but I'm keeping the original, possessive grammar of デクのアッシー (Deku no asshii) because I think it highlights an important implication.
Sooooo... the word Katsuki uses here アッシー (asshii) is uniquely loaded slang.

This term originates from Japan's bubble economy era of the late 80s and saw continued use through the 90s. During the economic bubble, the unemployment rate was very low; the related increased presence of women in the workplace led to a cultural perspective that women were gaining social power and financial independence.

A couple Japanese websites I looked at talked about luxury vehicles gaining in popularity during this time, so Asshii-kun are associated with expensive sports cars, something Katsuki is probably referencing since his car is fancy as fuck!
It's not a well known term anymore, to the point that I saw a number of jpn fans joking about having to look up what it means, haha. Katsuki's dialogue often has interesting, unusual word choices, and of course, reigning queen of up-to-date slang Camie teased him about his delinquent shtick being "out of fashion"!
In that journal article, Crescini explores English terms which roughly convey the same meaning as asshii. I've used google translate here to show you what is written, so let's take a look!

Now, on social media, I saw people (likely in their 40s and 50s) using the term jokingly to describe having to chauffeur someone around for errands. It was mostly men talking about their wives, but there were a couple instances of it being used for friends and family members. It definitely has the energy of "being forced to drive someone around without getting anything in return."
But notice that Katsuki voices this complaint about Izuku specifically, even though Kirishima is also in the car. Like yeah, he yells about Kirishima threatening to scratch his car, but he doesn't fucking call himself Kirishima's asshii!
He could have used a plural "you" pronoun or even pluralized Izuku's name with Deku-tachi to make it "Deku and the people with him," but no, it's "Deku's asshii."
Tell me, Kacchan, when it comes to Izuku, are you hoping to get something in return?

The Japanese example sentence describes a business proposal being immediately rejected. The comedy here is inherently tied to the verb being used for romantic rejection, like someone saying "I applied for a promotion, but those fickle hiring managers went and broke my heart."
Even if you aren't literally suggesting romantic love, the association makes it sound over the top and dramatic.
Kirishima is drawing attention to how serious and emotionally invested Katsuki is in making this offer and affectionately teasing him for it. Note that he doesn't just use the simple past tense for this verb (フラれた), which would have sounded direct and not particularly sympathetic. He's using a [verb] + shimau construction (further contracted as slang to "-chimatta") which makes it a "regrettable" outcome, like an "aww man!"
You can add that construction to any verb and it would sound funny/sympathetic, so he could have phrased it differently:
断られちまった ("You got turned down," common word used for all kinds of rejection)
拒められちまった ("You got denied," used for romantic, platonic, and familial relationships)
撥ね付けられちまった ("You got totally rejected," used for when someone coldly or flatly rejects an offer or request)
撃沈しちまった ("You got shot down," uses battleship sinking imagery for failure in daily life, business ventures, romance, hopes and dreams, etc.)
轟沈しちまった ("You got crushed," similar to above, but more severe and instantaneous sinking: instant kill, KO, torpedoed, etc.)
The last few in particular are very dramatic and humorous, so they would work well if Kirishima wanted to joke about the speed or bluntness of Izuku's refusal.
BUT NO.
DUDE USED THE VERB SPECIFICALLY ASSOCIATED WITH ROMANTIC REJECTION, which centers the feelings of heartbreak and disappointment.
He is commiserating with Katsuki for "putting his heart on the line" and getting the cold shoulder, and then he fucking wingmans for Katsuki by spelling it all out to Izuku!!
You can say all you want "it's just lighthearted banter, they're joking!" Sure. You're right, this is a funny scene.
But the joke is that Izuku is a cute girl Katsuki keeps trying (and failing) to woo. That he's taking advantage of Katsuki's feelings for him and stringing him along.
The joke is that Katsuki wants Izuku at his hero agency so bad, the rejection is essentially on the level of getting dumped or having your love confession rejected.
The joke is that Izuku is completely oblivious when it comes to love.

But I will say, for all Katsuki's complaints, the problem is obviously not a lack of reciprocation. The problem is that Izuku doesn't recognize what Katsuki feels for him. He doesn't get what Katsuki is trying to express to him. He can't answer honestly if he doesn't even understand the question.
The comedic parts of MHA are often wrapped up in important plot points and messages. Sure, it's funny, but why does that mean we're supposed to dismiss it?
Also, Kirishima says this:
"Midoriya sure is dense when it comes to these things."
その辺 (sono hen) is a perfectly ordinary phrase for "that area," "that topic," "in that regard," or "around there," and I wouldn't think anything of it if not for this next bit:
"On that note, what about you guys?"
They are talking about the Class B students who started dating, and Sero uses the same phrase to ask whether Jirou and Kaminari are a couple. Again, this isn't unusual, and if these moments were separated by whole chapters, it would not read as notable in any way. その辺 is a common enough phrase that it's not something you could pin down as a "thematic phrase" or anything like that.
But the repetition struck me. Sero could have said, そういえば (speaking of which, now that you mention it, on that subject), this is a very common sentence starter, but he also could have said things like 付き合ってといえば (speaking of dating) to be more specific.
In this conversation, その辺 is framed as the topic of dating or romance by the preceding remarks. Meanwhile, the "topic" Kirishima suggests Izuku is thickheaded about is only really defined by his own previous comment...
which framed Katsuki's rejection as romantic heartbreak.

First let's start by the "afterword", the note Horikoshi left after 430 and before the extras, chapter 431.

The best traslation I found and most people are agreeing with.
Key sentences are:
1.The real final chapter is 429, 430 is more like a curtain call.
2. PS: For chapter 431, I turn off the cameras and free the characters from their dramas.
This note being left after 430 and before the extras is so important. . The clarification of "the real final chapter is 429" and 430 is the curtain call is screaming: the show has ended here. This is further stated by "i turn the cameras off" by the man who use to refer himself as the camera man, I leave you with an example.

And back to point number 2: "and free the characters from their dramas", which could perfectly be understood as "the characters are no longer tied to their previous plots and drama" no longer connected to the main story.
It may seem like a reach until here, we're just trying to convince ourselves that's not canon, right? They´re delusions, right?
The problem is how far away everything about 431 antagonizes the whole story, the characters doesn't feel like themselves, they even regress back all their development, the drawing style looks totally different and there are many irregularities that call for our attention.

At this point I'm getting tired since the difference is astounding, don't believe me, just check the manga.
I don't think Horikoshi would've allowed those mistakes had he have a role in the making, maybe he did, there's no saying about that, but clearly if he did his involvement was very low.
Character's development wise now.
Seriously? "Deku"? And Katsuki complaining for picking him up. He cried his eyes out when Izuku lost his quirk and now he's back at season 1?
Izuku would never in a million years turn down that offer. And if he did, it would never be like this, so devoid of emotion and empathy.
430 showed us an Izuku aiming for his dreams again and at 431 this Izuku ¿? It's okay with being a teacher? Ok. And if that's not the problem, why he outright rejects Katsuki out of nowhere? When their rivalry was one of the main points of the plots for 430 chapters and now just um over? Without justification? Ok.

Now specifically about that ship canonization and bkdk.
Horikoshi has been doing this for 10 years. The choices he took the whole manga were incredibly intentional, all those romantic tropes given to bkdk, his interviews, all stand in direct opposition to what happened in this last chapter.
I, myself, don't know much about Jump but what I've heard is they end lot of shonens with the same heterosexual formula. I don't think all of this is a coincidence.
Something really important that needs to be adressed to is what happened back in June (I think), when suddenly MHA announced it was ending in 5 chapters could've something to do with this. The manga was suddenly rushed to its ends with unsatisfying resolutions and as if that was not enough, one month later (at most) the same happened to JJK and all of this came accompanied by a switch of one of the heads of Jump.
About 431 again though.
I was just thinking what would I do if I was pressured to write something that ruins the biggest project of my life and goes against everything I was hoping for? Refuse. Tell them to write it themselves. If I can't do anything to stop it and it'll be there, alright, but I WON'T DO IT.
And I think this could be Horikoshi's case.
I've never seen a shonen manga come so close to implying his male protagonist and his male deuteragonist are in love before. Yes, it was not EXPLICIT but it was so fucking clear if you knew how to read, all the way up to 430. All those cliches tropes he gave them, he knew, we know.
I thought I'll die trying to explaineverything that seems wrong with this with nothing to back me up but the fact that he added that note is clear for me. I'm surprised they allowed him to publish it, I thought we wouldn't even have that.

I'll not go into this anyways because it's kind of a reach but the conclusion is: I think it's a "soft" censorship and Horikoshi did his best to relay his message given what he had.

I'm not doing too well either. Part of me wants to wallow in it and part of me wants to run away and never look back. But yet another part of me wants to make sure I say this so other people are reminded: it's okay to be upset. It's okay to feel betrayed, to be angry. You don't have to beat yourself up for being delusional or foolish or whatever. We were smart, thoughtful, we had amazing creative ideas. We knew the story and characters better than most, dotted all our i's and crossed all our t's, had chapter numbers and panel screenshots ready for any argument. We were right.
One of the major reasons it hurts so much is because of the whiplash. We're not used to cherrypicking and propping up a flimsy source material with headcanons just to keep going, because 99% of the way, we had it made, we were catered to, we had our expectations met and exceeded.
I think I'd be satisfied forever if I only had that handhold. I don't know if I'll ever make sense of that part. And no amount of fan content is going to change the fact that Horikoshi didn't draw that ultimate symbol of their relationship mending and becoming truly close the way they're meant to be. That's always gonna pull at my heart because it seemed so inevitable. Why? why why why...
Alright, deep breath again.
Only time will tell if I'm up for sticking around, but right now I think I've wrapped up too much of myself in this to let it go. Like I need to put it into words in order to process and heal. I need to lovingly pick apart their psyches to teach myself the lessons I wanted to learn from them in suffering as well as joy. I need to solidify my own imagination into a representation that rings true.

I take Horikoshi's note as PERMISSION to ignore the chapter if I want to. He's saying it's not part of the main story, it's releasing the characters from their story and allowing them to live life after it. I take that as meaning the characters in 431 aren't the same characters that we've been reading about until now. Their context is entirely different. It's NOT connected to the main story thematically. It's almost fourth-wall breaking. In other words, it doesn't HAVE to impact the story if you don't want it to.
If y'all think my desire to ignore chapter 431 is motivated by shipping you're delusional and have been too focused on ships to think real hard about the implications of what this chapter says. I've already stated my feelings about the shipping aspect days ago. The problem with the chapter is that by itself it shits on so many themes in the story about dreams, inspiration, aspirations, and heroism, it shits on what All Might stood for and relegates heroism to basic law enforcement bullshit, and it destroys the fantasy at the end just like timeskip epilogues fucking love to do. It's atrocious. Horikoshi saying this chapter is after the cameras have been turned off allows me to sever it from the actually good parts of the story that were consistent and robust, and now I treat it as a fun little whatever. That's the only possible way I can excuse this tepid crap.
The only part that gets to stay is the creepy occult implication that Himiko is living inside Ochako as a vestige and somehow gets to enjoy both her crushes this way. That shit is amazing nightmare fuel and I expect 10 fanfics about it on my desk by the end of the week.

“it’s shonen what did you expect” I expected the writing to stay consistent. this story kept outdoing itself for almost 10 years, one-upping and surpassing expectations, then just… stopped. it’s really sad.
I never expected bkdk to be canon, but I did want to see a natural satisfying conclusion to their platonic dynamic. that’s all. and it feels like we can’t even have that.
how were things so good for so long, FOR LITERAL YEARS, then fell off so quickly what the fuck happened. how do you have a dynamic solely around the concept of a missed handhold then never give it to them.
how do you have a character repeatedly inspired by and saved by someone only for them to call SOMEONE ELSE their hero.
how can you wedge in an underdeveloped pairing and give them EVERYTHING we wanted/barely expected for ours. this is so fucking frustrating actually. I’m allowed to be severely upset and confused. I’ll accept this shit on my own time, until then I’m so fucking disappointed.
