I need people to stop comparing Sasuke Uchiha and Kakashi Hatake trauma like they all lived the same life, had the same personality, same support systems, same emotional development, same worldview, and same coping mechanisms when they absolutely did not. People flatten trauma into a competition instead of understanding that trauma interacts differently with every person depending on age, environment, attachment, identity, and what exactly was taken from them.
Secondly I feel like the Naruto fandom forgets Sasuke is a victim of genocide. What majority of the readers don’t realise is that Sasuke did not just lose his parents, family, and personal hero that night, he lost his entire idea and experience of society. Uchihas used to live segregated from the village which means Sasuke’s experience of society up until age 6 was limited to his clan to a huge extent. He lived in the Uchiha compound, saw Uchiha kids and fellow clansmen every day, interacted with Uchihas constantly, and built his entire understanding of belonging around them. One night it was all gone in a whoosh, like a big, bad, cruel joke.
Afterward, he still lived in the same compound where his parents were killed. Every street, wall, room, and memory was tied to the massacre. Then the person responsible was not some enemy shinobi from another nation, but his own brother, the person he loved and admired most, who forced him to relive the murders over and over through Tsukuyomi and told him to kill his best friend for power. Sasuke’s “moving forward” was psychologically chained to vengeance because the source of his trauma was still alive and actively manipulating him.
What I'm trying to say is that Kakashi’s trauma and Sasuke’s trauma are fundamentally different in structure, timing, and psychology. Kakashi suffered immense loss, but much of it came through war, impossible circumstances, or guilt surrounding decisions and failures he believed he could have changed. Over time he developed emotionally, found comrades, matured into adulthood, and learned to reinterpret his pain. Kakashi also had years of psychological growth before becoming the calm and composed man people compare to Sasuke who was still a child and teenager while going through repeated psychological destruction. People ignore that before Itachi returned and retraumatized him, Sasuke was already prioritizing Naruto and Sakura over revenge multiple times. He offered Naruto food during the bell test, worried about Sakura constantly, protected them with his body, was willing to die for them, and even considered abandoning revenge entirely after Kakashi spoke to him. He literally sat under the tree thinking about staying with Team 7 until the Sound Four arrived and reopened all of his insecurities and trauma.
And the “Sasuke turned emo while Kakashi stayed good” argument ignores personality entirely. Kakashi was emotionally withdrawn, rule obsessed, and detached as a child because of Sakumo’s death and the village’s treatment of his father. Sasuke, despite everything, was actually deeply compassionate in Part 1. He valued teamwork before Kakashi did at the same age. Naruto was usually the one provoking conflict due to jealousy, while Sasuke mostly kept to himself unless pushed. Sasuke’s kindness was shown through actions, not cheerful behavior.
Also, people seriously overlook how violated Sasuke’s body and mind constantly were throughout the story. Orochimaru’s curse mark functions as an ongoing violation of autonomy and bodily control. Orochimaru literally brands him, invades his body, watches through the curse mark, attempts to consume him physically, and psychologically conditions him through power and manipulation. Sasuke is repeatedly objectified by people who want to use him, possess him, consume him, control him, or project fantasies onto him. Even outside of combat, his boundaries are constantly ignored by others emotionally, psychologically, and physically.
And ironically, Kakashi himself understood that shinobi should not merely become tools for the village. When Sasuke asked him, “DO YOU REALLY FEEL THAT WAY, MASTER KAKASHI?” Kakashi answered “no.” Because Kakashi understood the moral contradiction of the shinobi world. He explicitly believed that blindly obeying orders without humanity was wrong. His entire philosophy after Obito centered around protecting comrades and thinking independently instead of acting like disposable weapons.
So no, the answer is not “Kakashi had it worse and stayed normal.” Their lives, minds, emotional foundations, and circumstances were completely different. Kakashi had decades to process his trauma and still suffered severe PTSD, depression, emotional detachment, suicidal recklessness, and isolation for years. Sasuke was a traumatized genocide survivor whose entire worldview collapsed in childhood and whose trauma was deliberately reopened and manipulated repeatedly by the people around him.
