After Koji Igarashi revealed in a GDC talk that Symphony Of The Night was inspired by The Legend Of Zelda, people began to claim SOTN wasn't inspired by Super Metroid at all, despite Igarashi previously being very open about Super Metroid's influence. I've continued to quietly research the history of playable female protagonists for a series I call Video Dames, and an until-now unrelated video on the history of Carmen Sandiego. But very soon (this year?) they will no longer be unrelated: For the first time in a game, Carmen Sandiego will be playable!

When EA launched it's first line of games in 1983, it ran a creator-focused ad entitled "Can A Computer Make You Cry?" It was more stylish than game ads had been up to that point and got a lot of attention. But there was an outtake that only appeared in one issue of a single magazine, Creative Computing. At first it appears the only difference is that the photo is in color, but it's actually an entirely different shot from the same session, with different lighting and everything. (I guess they made everyone sit there while they moved the lighting around a bit?) I've cleaned it up for you from the scan that's on the Internet Archive. Somehow this version looks more early '90s than early '80s to me?
