MAJOR ASOIAF SPOILERS???
So as you may or may not know, there is currently a play called The Mad King running at the Royal Shakespeare Company in London, which is set 10 years before GoT and covers The Tourney at Harrenhal through the end of Robert’s Rebellion.
People who have seen it — or who know people who have seen it — have been posting spoilers and they are…. unexpected to say the least. I’ve included screenshots below.
But PLEASE NOTE that it’s not entirely clear whether or not any of this is considered canon! GRRM signed off on the play but he did not write it, so it may or may not be just some shownly’s fantasy GoT prequel, but considering George’s feelings about fanfic….. well, you be the judge…..
Thoughts??
Okay some additional info….
I am being told that GRRM signed off on all this canon, so I guess we can take it as gospel.
Also, apparently in the play Rhaegar and Lyanna never get married and they do not name Jon “Aegon”, so I guess we can conclude that this play is NOT strictly show-canon.
As to the first point….. I’m honestly a bit surprised that all this info is just being put out there. I have said before here that I assumed/hoped that the full story about R+L would remain shrouded in mystery, something fans would debate for eternity…..
Another update…. *Those People* who work with GRRM put out a statement on the question of canon which cleared up….. pretty much nothing so I’m not gonna even bother posting it here. Basically they just said some of it is canon, some of it is not, George himself will have to confirm. 🤷🏻♀️
