She's just leaving. Elektra steps outside a townhouse, turns her head to shift the curtain of dark hair over her shoulder, and sees her at the bottom of the steps. Matthew's friend.

Elektra hadn't come through the front door to this residence, so she doesn't know how long Karen's been waiting. Waiting for the person inside? Out of journalistic interest?

Her eyes drop to the concrete again, suddenly ill at ease. For a moment, she's rooted in place ; but she licks her lips, expression shifting the way it does when she's gearing up to do something she maybe shouldn't, and as the woman passes by Karen's mouth is moving before she can think better of it.

“Yeah… I’ve thought about that a lot.” Foggy’s accusations — which at the time had scourged him more deeply than Nobu Yoshioka’s kyoketsu-shoge — echo in his skull.

Maybe it isn't only about justice, Matt. Maybe it's about you having an excuse to hit someone!

He shakes them off with a little shiver in his broad shoulders. Presses forward. “My dad, see, he’d never wanted me to fight like he did. He’d come home beaten half-to-hell, and tell me that I had to grow up to use my brains, not my fists. Some part of me really wanted to do right by him.”

There’s something wistful in Matt’s tone and aspect when he talks about Jack; only reminiscing about Foggy ever rivals it.

“Anyway, I figured the law was one way of meeting the pain I sensed out there on the periphery. Helping people. But law school, that shitty internship, they showed me all the ways it falls short. Or worse, actively screws people over. By the time we quit, I was frustrated. Angry.” Sardonic mirth creeps in as he adds, “So... really, I guess you can blame the man in black on Parish Landman and Julia Zack.”

The answer is honest, more or less. But as soon as he punctuates it with that trademark Matt Murdock wry quip, he knows it's a little too pat. That's not what the moment calls for.

And like she understands mourning a dead parent's hope for their child, Karen gets the notion of flipping a switch too ; can't put the toothpaste back in the tube. She has alluded to as much the past, questioned Matt's ability to retire the uniform or if he even should. This time, no nudge or affirmation comes.

Her thoughts branch out into distinct paths, and she wonders which to follow. Wanting to do right by dear old dad is a clear bruise, and she's tempted to press it, but maybe now isn't the time. She suspects a tug on the 'education years' string might unravel more of substance, anyway — she has a bit of a sixth-sense for feeling out the grief side of a matter on her own.
