everytime someone with mild autism or adhd says theyre "reclaiming" the r slur i kill another hostage
Hey…. Hey… Characters covered in blood, okay? You remember characters covered in blood?? You used to love characters covered in blood
[looking at people younger than me] you have your whole life ahead of you [looking at people older than me] you have your whole life ahead of you [looking at myself] its over
I hate it so much when people characterize Fanny as mean like omg the way she expresses her emotions is just different from everyone else which is why to others she might be perceived as rude. Idk I don’t like it when people mischaracterize her in boring ways
They also really like to see her as a "evil little killer." Fanny doesn't even like killing
I also think it's interesting that there's another character this happens to: Golf Ball.
There's something to be said about Fanny and Golf Ball being two of the most thoughtful and selfless characters in the whole cast. They point out injustices or problems to be solved and have convictions of titanium yet the former is often mischaracterized as being a pissy intolerable bitch while the latter is often mischaracterized as angry and self-obsessed. Both are superficial and both are demonstrably, completely untrue.
Fanny is never angry towards people or things that aren't worth her energy, and her close relationships to people like Black Hole and willingness to get help from Tennis Ball and work with Ice Cube against One show that she is very open to collaborating with people for the greater good. She's SO kind to people! It's injustice and unfairness that she hates, and she's generally pessimistic in a way that allows her to see everyone, including herself, as capable of doing things, as she says, "worthy of hate." I can't believe this has passed over some folks when it's in the literal first episode of BFB, lol.
Golf Ball is similarly almost always justified in her belief in her ideas because she *knows* she is a brilliant capable team member that can contribute to her team. Her frustration if she shows it at all is usually from people underestimating her capabilities--linked in no small part to her being small, armless and a woman--and I think she very realistically responds to that injustice by putting a lot of responsibility onto herself, but when people don't also meet her where limitations stand, (for example being chastised for "managing the team" in a very arm-focused challenge) she understandably gets frustrated. When her expectations for herself remain unrealized, all of her sensitivities to her place in the game and the larger world resurface into a question of her worth, and she should be the last person in Goiky who should be doubting her ability.
Anyway, both Fanny and Golf Ball are fascinating character studies of women who have very solid moral cores but are misjudged by people who cannot work past their kneejerk aversion towards a woman who has a little bit of a shrill voice. Even though the series begins Fanny's character as kind of a joke, there's a lot of thought put into how she views the world and it's one reason I adore her, and the same can be said for how Golf Ball interfaces with being an autistic woman doing sciency things and reflecting real phenomena vis a vis injustice in the real world.
TL;DR Fanny and Golf Ball are similar characters and they are enjoyable characters, as are so so so many of the other women in BFDI. People have said it before of course but misogyny is a useful word to explain why people can't stand Fanny or Golf Ball. Seriously, they're like misogyny catnip for people who have never watched a movie with a woman in it and it would be funny if it weren't depressing as hell.

RIP Marjane Satrapi, author of the amazing graphic novels Persepolis about living during the fundamentalist revolution in Iran in the 70’s and 80’s. She also created the animated movie based on the graphic novels, which is where these gifs come from.

Reblogging in honor of Marjane Satrapi, one of THE great graphic novelists. Her comic Persepolis was a crucial text for shaping my belief that comics can deeply explore identity, culture, politics, and history.

I'm trying to sleep and the bugs outside are buzzing at a certain cluster of wavelengths that reads to my brain as a human voice and whenever I let my focus shift it jumps to trying to hear what the gnat king has to say
I closed my window
The character, typically the hero, receives a Call to Adventure but at first refuses for some reason. Events then conspire to force them to
it is impossible to watch a movie. every night i think i want to watch a movie. no movie gets watched. because it's not possible
and yet they keep making movies with the hopes that one day humanity will discover a way to watch them. it's so inspiring
I heard another video game is coming out soon
this has to stop
this sewing pattern just touched me while i was in the middle of reading it

Very generally speaking, when you see a black man in a piece of media, be it tv show, movie, video game, etc. there’s something you often see a lot of writers do. To go against the stereotype of black men (and black people in general) being dumb and lazy, you’ll see this black male character being smart and an achiever.
The Black Nerd. A common character type, the nerd will always be very interested in all things nerdy: science, video games, mathematics, etc. In an continued effort to combat stereotypes, the Black Nerd will be lack athleticism, probably being asthmatic (the nerdiest of conditions). The Black Nerd will dress smartly, suspenders and bow ties. They’ll always talk smart too, using proper English with complex words.
Now, I don’t have a problem with a black character being a nerd, indeed black people are a people; we aren’t all the same and we all have varying personalities. The problem I have is that too often we see a distinct disconnect between Blackness and the Black Nerd. The Black Nerd doesn’t listen to hip hop or rap, only classical music. The Black Nerd only has white friends, the only other black characters are into not nerdy stuff. The Black Nerd never ever uses AAVE at any time in any context.
And again I must say that Black people, not being a monolith, there are no hard fast rules to being Black. I’m more than sure there are Black people like what I’ve described above, I’m not saying it’s impossible; what I’m getting at is that the only Black Nerd we see. There are Black Nerds that play basketball, that bump Kendrick Lamar, and use AAVE since it’s an ever changing dialect. I’m just saying there’s no one way of being a nerd and no one way of being Black.
Well @dumbey, seems we’re in similar boats
This ain’t about him, this is about Black/Asian solidarity. Focus.
This is the most powerful call to ratio I've ever seen. It's like she's performing an incantation.
