“yeah, no, i get it.” his voice is soft, eyes down-turned. ted’s lashes, unfairly long like most other boys are, seem to brush at his cheeks, like if he could close his eyes to all this, ignore that it’s happening, maybe he won’t have to face it. the two of them go through this every summer, but it doesn’t get any easier, her leaving, him staying behind.
it’s worse for sera, that he knows, but he still can’t bring himself to be the bigger person, not when they’re both still kids, and both not used to such permanent things as goodbyes ( and why does this one in particular feel so permanent? they did the same thing last year, but this feels different. feels like this departure will be longer, inexplicably, unbearably so ).
he steels himself, grey-brown eyes flitting back up to meet sera’s. she’s strong, stronger than him in a lot of ways, not that he’d ever admit it, but he’s trying to be strong now for her. “you have my house number, so just – call, i guess. when you have time. ma doesn’t like us spending too much time on the phone–” and never with girls, “–but i’ll keep her off my back.”
for a moment ted is gripped with an enormous desire to reach out, grasp sera’s hand, or to pull her completely into a hug. it overwhelms him in such a way that he can’t tell if this feeling is his own, or one he’s picking up from sera, or maybe some intense combination of the two. his hand stutters up from his side, as if he really is going to hold hers, squeeze it, tell her it will all be fine, but his resolve falters, and his hands fall limp back to his side.
ted sets his face neutral again, curved only with the barest ghost of a smile. “don’t get into too much shit while you’re gone. y’know i won’t be there to bail you out.”
