This is solely because it will bug me until the end of time if I don't say it.
In season 1, episode 2 of "Um, Actually" on Dropout, there is an incorrect statement and I must correct it.
Um, actually, in Labyrinth Jareth the goblin king did NOT take Toby from Sarah with the express intent to turn him into the next king, that was later added within hints in the novelization and through the (not so well written) manga series, as in the movie he intended to just turn Toby into a goblin until he starts bonding with Toby, but it is never said he will become the next goblin king.
Anyways, carry on.
@dropoutdottv
I'm sorry to disappoint, but… Toby would have been Jareth's heir. Here is the official page in Bestiary.
As I had said, yes, in other merchandise and canon media it is said he would have made Toby heir, however the movie itself never says it and it is only implied lightly through Jareth's interactions with Toby, but never outright stated there.
Yes I'm pettily proving you wrong, this is the ONE THING that I have near unending knowledge of no one will take this from me
Oh, really? How about we raise the stakes, hmm? So it has to be said in the movie, right? Behold!! An early scenario of Labyrinth! Words that have power over all visual images. SARAH falls right on to a magnificent huge bed. Opposite her JARETH sits in a chair. FREDDIE, wrapped in a blanket, is gurgling on his lap. SARAH reaches into her pocket and pulls out the watch. It is a few minutes before 13. JARETH stands up. JARETH: There's still time. He gestures to a clock on the wall that shows the same time as her watch. He places FREDDIE into a cradle and comes over to the bed. He looks down at her. JARETH: Besides, I'm no longer interested in having a little goblin prince. I've decided I'd much rather have a queen.
I'm tempted to say you're right, HOWEVER, this was an early scenario, as you said, and therefore was not in the movie and is also not even considered canon!! That would be like pointing to their original desire to cast Michael Jackson as an example of Jareth having a different design!
The original "Um, Actually" prompt was discussing the movie and no other Labyrinth related media, therefore that is the only thing to be referenced directly unless stated otherwise.
This is fun do you wanna be friends now
Great, I can accept that. So you want me to tell you a story? Okay Once upon a time there were kings and queens, and sometimes they gave other people names, because it was considered a great honor. But what people didn't know was that a commoner couldn't bear a royal name. And of course there are rules. The first is to keep in touch with the history of the family and the kingdom, and the second is Euphony and Fashion. Now let's remember...
"He's a lively little chap. I think I'll call him Jareth. He's got my eyes."
So, what do we see? Bestowing a royal name that is directly related to the throne and is relevant (what could be more fashionable than name of reigning king, right, Jareth? No, you're not vain at all. And not a jerk who thinks that this child is becoming yours.And it's not because you see a child as an extension of yourself.)
I think this is a direct statement of the rights to this child. And if Jareth had been choosing his next servant, he wouldn't have bothered and fussed with him so tenderly. Oh, and it's also a child from his beloved woman (as strange as it may sound), which makes baby special. And it gives baby certain power.
I don't mind new acquaintances
