Kari-Lise Alexander’s “Wake” at Thinkspace Gallery.

Opening on Saturday, April 1st, 2017 at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City, California is artist Kari-Lise Alexander’s solo exhibition, “Wake.”

A Seattle-based painter, Alexander is inspired by her Scandinavian heritage, particularly its folklore. Her sensuous portraits of beautiful women, derived from traditional Nordic stories, appear haunted and ethereal at times, and at others formidable. Alexander’s paintings present pivotal moments drawn from these traditional stories, capturing junctures of transformation and episodes of vulnerability.

“Wake” will be on view until April 29th, 2017.

“Death and the Maiden 2” at Roq La Rue.

Unfortunately I somehow missed the info about this exhibition, unfortunate because this is Roq La Rue’s - one of the best galleries in the country’s last show, “Death and the Maiden 2.”

Each artist was asked to reinterpret the motif of a young woman and a skeleton in an embrace, best known as a Danse Macabre, which has been a popular and evocative subject for artists from the middle ages through contemporary times.  Artists such as those above: Kari Lise Alexander, Peter Chan, Sail, Syd Bee, Travis Louie and Esao Andrews plus many others have created gorgeous reminders of life and death.

It is with a heavy heart to say goodbye to Roq La Rue, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed posting about their always excellent shows and sharing them here with you.  They’ve led me to many incredible artists and I’ll treasure that forever.  Thank you.  

Kari-Lise Alexander’s “A Lovelorn Theft.”

Kari-Lise Alexander is fascinated by the landscape and mythology of her Scandinavian roots. We recently featured her ethereal oil and acrylic paintings on our blog, mostly portraits of girls that resemble the nymphs of Nordic folklore. Living and working in Seattle, with its cool and wet winters, also provides Alexander with inspiration, and we often find her subjects bathing in or near water. She portrays mythical swan-maidens in her upcoming solo exhibition at Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco, “A Lovelorn Theft”.
