Sleeping beauty
(Something I drew in early February)
well. i think the art is returning. and all it took was one of the sweetest most tragic relationships i've ever seen.......got into witch hat atelier and WOWOWOW these two. THESE TWO???? i love them and they love each other!! i want them to hug ðŸ˜
all done 🪄 (colored version of my banner)
i should note that i made a itty bitty qifrey cloak as a reference for this but i think i lost it. it was so tiny and cute :(
fabric drapery is really hard to understand so i basically made the cloak and secured it onto a roll of painter’s tape and went based on that. idk how shirahama does it so consistently (although tbf her fabric is really stylized and not necessarily realistic all of the time [saying this as someone who’s studied from her drapery]… which makes it hard to mimic her style even when using photo reference 🥲 wish i could draw fabric without needing 50 different reference images)
anyways i haven’t posted on here in a little bit because i was on vacation/was otherwise busy (still am… fall semester coming up, too…). sigh.

california through the eyes of photographer wilson davis ellis, american c. 1940s-50s.
"Twice a Day" (1-nichi 2-kai) is such a delight to read (and it kind of hurts me that Manga Million has it up to volume 5, not to mention that they wrongly mark it as "complete"? Vol 7 came out in June and that month's edition (August) of Cocohana EVEN just published its 43rd chapter? so I don't know what they were doing there (rushed. feels like a rushed job. Which explains why NY Bird uses the Margaret Comics tankoubon volume cover instead of a "special" one as the 95% of the series there), not to mention it's an irregular published series, from the looks of it...
Anyway, it's a series that I was wishing, somehow, could get noticed (as the rest of her portfolio, ngl) to get some kind of release, and it DOES NOT disappoint.
How do I hate that just when I want to turn off the laptop, and since it was Updates Tuesday, I find a slight disturbance in the way how I hear the device I plug/unplug (my mouse) being slightly, SLIGHTLY lower than it usually kind of is? (both with and w/o headphones)
And the thing, I noticed this also a little while back, but after another while I also kind of got used to it, or smth (maybeit got fixed later, I dunno, man)? and... I dunno. Maybe it's that? Updates messing things up (as per usual).
The sound works in generally fine. It's just. SMALL. MINUSCULE THINGS?
So weird, man.
So, we need to talk about what webtoons(the company) has done to webcomics
Over the past 7 or so years, we've seen this absolute shift in expectation, migration, and stagnation in the webcomics sphere which applies to style, sustainability, and the platforms grip on readers and creators
I'll be the first one to say that webcomics are not an easy way to make money and a majority of folks who make them rarely see profit. This has always been the case! But when virality, siphoning audiences from all over, and opportunity to 'get printed' presented itself, that expectation shifted.
So let's talk about what those expectations are now: 🔴Demand for Higher quality- less readers will check out beginner looking works or comics that feel too 'faulty' in style meaning less excitement to see webcomics grow over the years. Polish is expected and commented on consistently by readers
There is also an expectation for specific visual and narrative styles. This applies to other social media platforms too- in that works that take less investing in are often promoted and prioritised. That means less risks on narratives, less nuances, and shorter series running.
🔴All on one site/app- That may seem pretty fantastic for getting new readers (and is the absolute main sticking point for so many artists) but when algorithms and specific series are wanted, your works have a harder chance getting to the people they need to. The search function is trash for a reason
I'm not one to toot the competition flute, but there's a level of that at play when the spotlight for that platform is actually pretty small. What you get is a lot of readers checking out the same comics, and not spreading it all out to find yours (their subs have a cap for this reason)
🔴Sustainability (and lack thereof)- The creator of these comics are often burnt out and given little support- all while fighting to see what is allowed on the platform with its excitable censoring. I won't speak for originals (there's many testimonies you can find) but their experiences of burn out are harrowing
With the high production expectation for a person who is rarely given help (often has to hire out of pocket for that) and the readers who want Updates Now, it's a frustrating place to post your comics with no rest. It's 2026, we shouldn't be treating cartoonists this way still.
Webtoons (the company) is always going to be interested in making a profit. That's sort of where it all starts and stops here. They'll embrace the slop machines (more slop sources) for investors, they'll mistreat creators, cancel 'unprofitable' comics, censor work, and protect that bottom line. That's their MO, always!
So when I see these conversations that inevitably float around about Webtoons and how the only response is 'stop using it', I think we also need to deconstruct what it's done to creators and readers and how they engage with/create works too- because it doesn't seem that simple of a solution
Webtoons has solidified itself in webcomics as the Place to start and stop with comics. They want you to use their app of course, but they've conditioned folks to think it's the only way to share your stuff. How do we break this? How do we get people to stop using it?

There was a one-shot (not reaaaally a one-shot, but was published as such in Mangaplus) more or less explaining in general terms what was the idea behind the Manga Million initiative and such.
They keep saying that AI wasn't used and I understand that some of the translation companies they have hired also manage LLM for machine-translation... however, arguably, translating into 100 languages is probably a logistics nightmare outside more... popular and bigger publishing countries, since these are probably not that much of an issue (if actual TLs are available, hence credits towards Panini, Ivrea, Yen Press, Distrito Manga, Viz, Milky Way Ediciones, Pika Editions, Devir, Kaze, Kana, Tokyopop (Germany), bilibili, etc, etc) if they are borrowing THEIR TLs (I have checked credits from my local ones, I checked examples like Undead Unluck, and they truly are using both the Panini ES and Panini MX translations). The issue relays in the not-so popular languages, which yes or yes, are machine translated.
Also, theres' an article elsewhere about uncredited translators, and fucking fair; unfortunately it's still a bad practice that big companies DO NOT credit their workers, hence why some are credited behind probably first names and initials, :/. NOT TO MENTION, some credits are NOT RIGHT.
The Undelu example that I mention, if you go all the way in the credits, I recognize the name "Marta Moya" for Panini Spain, and checking it with my physical copies, the name repeats, because (as I always HAVE assumed) the Mexican Spanish translation is ACTUALLY an adaptation of the European Spanish translation. BUUT, can you imagine that they miscredited the Mexican Spanish translator... with Tozuka himself? like... bruh, no? (at least credit her and the person that adapted it, ffs)
I checked the titles that are available here, and I recognized names, obviously, and I guess some are badly credited as well 💀).
(I also noticed some titles that HAVE been published in Spanish, this option is not available in them... which... makes sense why they are left out with the "we then chose those that are unavailable in ENGLISH"... so I suppose the Italians, French, and Germans might as be confused as us Spanish-speaking people, with the selection, lmao (like, Haeba... Harabara Sensei, I think? and Heart Program... do you know how much I SEE THESE in the store I go??? would have interesting if they included She is Beautiful, though...)
THAT being said, now I know whom I can blame for some of the random shoujosei series that they put in this project. So, uhm, thanks current editors in chief and/or teams from magazines like Betsuma, Margaret, Ribon, Cocohana, Cookie, Office You ðŸ«
They claim "300 masterpieces" and I was looking at the titles that were at the very bottom of the "most viewed" list yesterday and I still say most of these feel random ...there are series that are very left out, ngl as "masterpieces" (still confused why Dekawanko was chosen instead of... Gokusen, like???) although I understand they are also pushing for the newer stuff (those that are probably not a year old) over classics, so...
HOWEVER, one another interesting thing they mention is about manuscripts, and I guess digital manuscripts are easier to access than older physical ones. They mention they had to rescan stuff, they had to double-check with the magazines, the actual tankoubon (and I suppose that's why the bunkos tend to have a more complete manuscript, as they looked like in the magazine itself - not the tankoubon), and MAN, it sounded like another nightmare for translation stuff. I was thinking in authors' scribbles for stuff that are already hard to understand (looking at you, Kawahara, lol) from the get go.
I'm not 100% defending them, btw, there's quite the nuance in what they are saying, too many "to be fairs", but also like... I still feel frustrated.
It would be a long year and four months, though.
(I would still be pushing for the series that I want to Panini MX to publish... hopefully the numbers in this project thing makes THEM consider in getting them... like sukedan, for example... like, look, I love the bunko edition of it, but I cannot spend in another 1500+ pesos to get all that shit here when I can barely read it... better to have it in Spanish, in a nice size and spend those 1500 on the local edition, basically)
partners
Okay, easy recommendations of shoujosei? stuff in Manga Million that are actually a few samples available of what they have there.
Rules: I'm actually just recommending stuff that I COULD attest is made by a human. So, no stuff translated by Blue Horizon, no Flitto Japan, for the moment. For experience from what I have observed in Mangaplus, though, I know Medibang sometimes also do not credit translators, and they also often use Mikan (another LLM-friendly company, the people behind the emaqi platform :/) in the middle, so it gets blurred. But you could probably tell; much I can do is basic English grammar stuff for clunkiness.
But, at least, Medibang also employs humans, and it sorta happens I recognize name here and there. Allegedly, there are some series which translators are badly credited, as they only tl'ed a part and the rest was made by a LLM.
I am only considering unlicensed series.
What I mark in parenthesis are the available chapters in the platform. They can or may not be complete. Some of these are ongoing, as well. I have been trying to figure out in Shueisha's digital catalogue if, the numbers match... but the older a series is, and if they don't have marked chapters, it's nearly impossible to make a guess (unless you have the magazines at hand or a PROPER archive exists, but, you know). I'm also looking at other sources, as well.
If anyone of these catches your eye, and if my conspirative suppositions are true, the more support, the more views they get, chances are these COULD get either eventually added in Mangaplus or potentially phisically licensed (in the US, at least)? This is just a theory of mine, obviously, but... that's ALSO the feeling I have of this platform initiative :/
Shoujosei recommendations in Manga Million:
1 Nichi 2 Kai (Twice a Day, 30 ch = 5 Vol, ongoing), by Ikuemi Ryo - translated by MC Divinagracia, Medibang
Aozora Yell (Yell for the Blue Sky, 44 ch), by Kawahara Kazune - translated by C Woods, Medibang
Sumika Sumire (48 ch), by Takanashi Mitsuba - tl'ed by Catherine Delage Nakajo, Medibang
Otome Tsubaki wa Warawanai (Otome Tsubaki Never Laughs, 50 ch, ongoing), by Takanashi Mitsuba - tl'ed by Catherine Delage Nakajo, Medibang
N★Y Bird (12 ch - this one is a little unfair since it's a sequel), by Makimura Satoru - translated by MC Divinagracia, Medibang
Hot Road (18 ch), by Tsumugi Taku - tl'ed by Yuichi Tashiro, Medibang
Hime-chan no Ribbon (Hime-chan's Ribbon, 40 ch), by Mizusawa Megumi - tl'ed by Alex Joule, Medibang
Sekai de Ichiban Shiawase! (The Happiest in the World, 8 ch = 1 vol, ongoing) by Haruyoshi Kizashi and Aruko - tl'ed by Emmett Harris, Medibang
I will probably be updating this list in the future, if anyone finds this in the tags (due to a potential increase of titles, would only limit to authors).
This morning I was surprised by the sudden (not-so-sudden) launch of Manga Million, a Shueisha free online manga platform that they are putting it out there due to the 100th anniversary of the publisher.
In theory, the platform seems like a good idea, in general. Mangaplus is there, sure, but the platform mostly uploads stuff that is in Jump+ and all of the Jump Comics magazines, that demographically speaking is shonen and seinen. Just very recently they have been adding shoujo stuff (and stuff that while you would say is "shonen", at this point the demographics seem to be incredibly blurry, as proven with many of the recent one-shots that I wouldn't say are "shonen" or "seinen" adjacent), like Gusts and Beats, and Prism Rondo, both from Betsuma and Manga Mee, respectively.
I hope every single person who puts nice comments in tags under reblogged art knows that you you guys are the backbone of society. Being an artist online sucks these days, but here on tumblr I still get compliments under artworks that I made years ago. I hope you know every WOW and heart emoji and heartfelt compliment and funny comment you left in the tags is part of the reason I kept drawing all these years, in spite of everything that was going on.
I've been screenshotting the nice tags I get for years, and at this point it would be literal thousands of lines if I still had my old files. I love u tumblr users <333333333

ok i’ve been curious about something. can you name a character who is, all three at once,
1. canonically female (no variation)
2. canonically the protagonist of her story (if it’s an ensemble cast you have to say you can legitimately see her as The main character)
3. your personal #1 favorite character in that story (ties are acceptable)
?
yes
no
