One tragic aspect of the Odyssey that I've never really seen handled by any adaptation is the link between Odysseus' marriage and the Trojan War itself.
When Helen was of age to be married, all the Lords of Greece came to seek her hand. This was an issue for her stepfather the King of Sparta who could only pick one husband and then would have to deal with the far greater number of angry rejected suitors.
One suitor was Odysseus, then a younger man. He quickly ascertained that he had no chance of marrying Helen. Ithaca was too poor for him to even bring any proper gifts, let alone a dowry. But he did catch the eye of the King's niece, one Penelope.
Now Penelope was still a bit out of Odysseus' league, but not so much as Helen was. So he makes a deal with the King of Sparta. Support my bid to marry Penelope, and I'll give you a solution to this suitors problem. The King agrees, so Odysseus suggests all the suitors swear an oath to defend Helen's marriage from anyone who might strike against it. They all, including Odysseus, so swear, and Helen is married to Menelaus. The King proves as good as his word, and Penelope is wed to Odysseus.
Of course this means that Odysseus has now bound himself to fight for Helen and Menelaus. After an attempt to feign madness he is forced to fulfill his duty.
So his own plan, to marry Penelope and stop a hoard of ravenous suitors, ends with him forced to defend his own marriage from a hoard of ravenous suitors.
One time I was at a pub trivia night with some writer friends and we almost won but there was a tie. As a tiebreaker they asked us and the other team to write down as many moons of Jupiter as we could in two minutes.
None of us are very into astronomy so at first everyone was like oh weâre gonna lose but there were three of us at the table that night who were either former classics majors or otherwise super well read on Roman mythology and the three of us were like give us that paper right now and we just took turns writing down all of the lovers of Jupiter from mythology that we could.
So of course we won lol
You really never know what random niche knowledge you have will come in handy at trivia night. You really donât.
Love that youâre making it clear exactly what physical demands this job has, but could you possibly, potentially, phrase it differently?

Angry Gamers (capitol G) will look at a new trailer, invent a way cooler and more epic version of it, and then think that cooler and more epic version is Bad, somehow
New female GTA protagonist is being described as "looking like a tranny and fat"
As in
This character:
She literally is not. Would be way cooler if she was though
Ciri is "too masculine" in the new Witcher trailer.
Ciri.
In this trailer:
This is literally just a cis woman. Would be based as fuck if they fucked with that a bit.
Man imagine a GTA where you play as a trans woman sex worker forced into increasingly dangerous situations, surviving and slowly thriving through crimes and heists of escalating stakes, slowly overcoming and eventually overthrowing those who wronged you in both the justice system and the criminal underworld
Maybe game studios should have one of these Gamers on their team to torture. The angrier this Gamer gets the further the rest of the team pushes. If this Gamer is violent with rage by the end of a brainstorming session it's considered successful.
They could keep him in a little terrarium
Not letting you hide this in the tags
By the way it's like. Really fucked how society's thoughts on epilepsy is just "get over it." Seizures can cause permanent brain damage. Seizures can kill people. Seizures hurt like hell. Allow me to reiterate that seizures can kill people. And you're just gonna casually put flashing lights, a common trigger for seizures in your advertisement, in your animation meme, in your edit, on your billboards, without even thinking about putting a simple disclaimer? That's unbelievable. Your little anime edit could deadass cost a life and you're not gonna put a warning because it's "inconvenient" or "people like that shouldn't be on the internet" (ableist) (the problem exists outside the internet also). Or you'll give insufficient ones like putting it in the captions or only giving like one second before the flashing lights appear, meaning that the trigger's already in motion before anyone who needs the warning can read it and save themselves from literal physical danger.
We need to start commenting under other people's posts about how to properly warn for flashing lights and eyestrain. We need to be emailing and calling companies about their possibly triggering advertisements that could induce seizures. We need to stop tolerating ableism and start speaking up for the more vulnerable.
Also, stop putting epilepsy warnings. That's like saying "warning: schizophrenia" on a post including unreality or "warning: dyslexia" on a post with a typing quirk. First off, the disability mentioned isn't the only group of people that this could trigger. Second, it doesn't truly get the message across and instead makes it worse for those with the disability-- scrolling through the epilepsy tag on Tumblr should get you to view the content of other epileptic people, but no, you just get a bunch of flashing lights and eyestrain, even though you could instead tag for, oh I dunno, flashing lights and eyestrain.
Anyways this Disability Pride, and for every month that comes after, think about epileptic people and others who are triggered by flashing lights/eyestrain. Happy pride to those who experience seizures too frequently due to the unaccommodating and ableist societies we live in!

i made a post like this before but I can't find it now. so. I'll just redo it.
What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?
It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.
My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict đ
I remember walking down the street and seeing a sign protesting George W. Bushâs war on Iraq, so I think that.
shoutout to narrative resonance i love narrative resonance
âthis character diedâ aw :(
âthis character died; here are their grieving loved onesâ: ouch ouch ouch :(
âthis character died; hereâs their bedroom still full of all their precious belongings and birthday cards and childhood photos of them that their family has not touched yetâ: uuuuhnmm. harpoon directly through my stomach đ
having free control over our endrocrine systems and the ability to change our genitals is currently inextricably tied to trans rights, and for good reason, but frankly i don't think it even needs to be. it should just be a matter of bodily autonomy, and that should be universal. if a cis dude wants tits and a pussy i think that would be fine. if cis women want a dick or nothing at all that should be allowed i think. people shouldn't need to be transgender to be allowed to change their bodies. free the nipple, enlarge the nipple, remove the nipple. whatever the fuck you want. i dont know if there's a term for this belief but i hold it very strongly. everybody biohack yourselves NOW
So are you just willfully ignorant to weight being scientifically proven to cause various health issues or do we need someone to sit you down and give you some basic fucking education on the matter?
So when I said "Our society's obsessive fixation on attaining abnormal degrees of thinness and equating it to being healthy is detrimental to people of all body types, and a natural standard which must be forcibly maintained to this degree is not a natural standard"
what you heard was "we should replace our unhealthy fixation on *losing* mass with an unhealthy fixation on *increasing* it"

I canât stand looking at Labubus. Not because theyâre ugly, or because theyâre way too expensive for what they are (basically clip-on Funko Pops to decorate purses with), but because I spent $50 of my own money and 10 hours of my own time to hand-sew a knockoff Labubu for a guy I liked. I included a sweet note with it and everything. And then the guy turned out to be a complete and utter douchebag (lied to my face about his age, was in the process of taking classes after a DUI).
This guy was a co-worker of mine, and I was torn up about him for a couple of months, but he was chatting with his friend in front of me in the breakroom, and thatâs where I learned about the DUI. I heard the phrase, âDUI classes,â come out of his mouth, and it was like a bolt of lightning struck me. You guys. My heartbreak was immediately cured. I was so ecstatic that I said, âWait! Wait! Wait! Hang on,â out loud and started texting my mom and my sister about the revelation. I was thrilled. Iâd been walking around feeling like a knife was sticking out of my chest, and it was like the knife evaporated on the spot. Iâve never felt such instant relief.
Also, I hexed the shit out of him and his little crew of friends, and when I quit, Iâm sure he knew that it was mostly them that motivated my exit, because he sure was asking me a lot of questions. Since I left, I havenât seen hide or hair of him, and the place has changed a lot, so I wonder if his ass got booted. That place sucked before the new owner took over, and it quickly became apparent in the 6 months I worked there that most of the guys there (the staff was mostly cis, straight dudes) had little to no respect for women. Lots of those dudes got canned because they wouldnât listen to the women in charge. It was actually crazy.
Anyway, fuck Chris, fuck Labubus, fuck working for a grocery store where the customers are unabashedly cruel and astonishingly stupid.
