An Archive of Our Own, a project of the
Organization for Transformative Works
For @HadrianPeverellBlack.
Thanks for organising the event, I loved my promps and I hope, @HadrianPeverellBlack, you like what I came up with.
Steve always loved the charm of old buildings in and around New York. Being an architect and a hopeless romantic, he developed a specific eye for the beauty of things. That’s why he moved into this building, because of the views, the outside of the building and the breathtaking staircase that leads to the apartments. He bought the penthouse apartment a few years ago, and renovated it as a minor project on the side.
The house Steve lives in is like a little community on its own. He is the youngest resident of the bunch and he takes good care of his neighbours, who in return send him home-cooked meals and cakes whenever he does something for them. He loves his life, but…
A thing that is missing in Steve’s life is love.
Steve has dated people, had a couple of long-term relationships in his life, but there wasn’t anybody for the long run so far. The last relationship Steve has had was a dark time for him. The guy didn’t love him and Steve ignored all the red flags his surroundings gave him until the man tried to hit Steve, and that was the end of that relationship and the hope of ever finding that special somebody.
Now he is single and happy for nearly two years. Although he enjoys living his life as a single man, deep down he knows that something is still missing, but he gave up on searching because he is tired of being rejected and scared to fall for the wrong person, again.
Steve walks towards the front door of the building, deep in thoughts about a client who came by the office earlier today and wanted to change all the plans of the building Steve has designed for them, when he feels himself losing the ground under his feet. Before he hits the pavement, he gets caught by strong arms.
A little shaken and with a smashed phone screen, Steve finally can look up; and what he sees are the most beautiful eyes and man in the entire world. Too stunned to say something, Steve just stares. The other man breaks their spell first, which brings Steve out of his haze.
“I am so sorry! These are my boxes. Are you alright? Sorry, my friends were supposed to help me move in, but they had an accident and couldn’t make it. Are you ok?” The other man seems worried, and Steve is a little lost for words by the sheer beauty of the other man.
The silence between them grows uncomfortable again, and that realisation brings Steve finally back to himself and that he still has yet to answer the stranger.
“Oh, don’t worry. Nothing happened, you saved me!” He just blurts towards the handsome man, who gives him a shy smile in return. They’re just standing there on the side of the road between boxes and stare at each other. Mesmerised and totally caught by one another.
A horn honks next to the sudden noise startles them both.
“Well,.... Wait, don’t I know you from somewhere?” the man with his brown hair put neatly into a bun asks Steve. Somehow he seems familiar too, but Steve can’t put his finger on it just from where.
“Oh, I am not sure. Are you moving into the empty apartment on the top floor?” Steve asks with a shy smile, hoping that the stranger will be his neighbour soon. The other smiles and nods eagerly.
“Yeah, that's me. If I ever get these boxes up there without an elevator.” The beauty smiles at Steve, and he can hear himself talk right at this moment.
“I can help you carry these boxes upstairs.” His eager tone seems to make the other man smile.
“You don't have to. We don't even know each other, and by the look of it you came from work and will probably be exhausted.” He tells Steve who just shakes his head and says “don't worry, we'll be done in no time if you let me help you.”
That's the first time Steve climbs the staircase, with many more trips to come.

The second time Steve Rogers meets his neighbour is when he is falling down, again.
Steve is looking at his phone on his way to work, and is deep in his thoughts walking down the stairs just past the letter boxes when he crashes into something and goes down like a wet bag.
He doesn't have the time to take a breath when he is once again being picked up by muscular arms and a worried facial expression from his beautiful neighbour.
Steve notices the slight pink blush on the other man's face while saying “sorry” before he storms past Steve. Mh, he thinks, but puts it away as a bad day on the other man's behalf.
On his way back to his apartment, he remembers that although they spend hours together carrying boxes up the stairs, he never asked the stranger’s name. He must remember to do that next time.

After work Steve is usually exhausted, but today has been weird. The thought of the crash from this morning will not leave Steve's mind.
So after work, he makes a detour on his way home into the bodega to get some wine and see if his neighbour is up for a talk and some cheering up, because the other man seemed pretty down this morning while he picked Steve back up.
Usually, when they meet on the stairs, the brown-haired man seems chilled and in good spirits, even though they haven't exchanged names yet, which has become a bit of a game, Steve thinks, because they smile and greet one another.
Today though, something seemed off in the other man. Steve walks into the bodega and grabs a bottle of red wine and some chocolates.
While he makes his way up the stairs, he feels a little nervous. He hasn't had that feeling in a while, not after the horrendous break up with his ex, but he somehow feels like a teenager right now.
With every step, the nerves become more and more. The stranger's door is just opposite the last one of the steps, and Steve rushes towards the door, eager to knock, before he loses his confidence.
When he is about to swing his hand towards the door, said door opens and Steve falls directly into the well-known pair of muscular arms of his neighbour.
“We should stop meeting like this, my dearest neighbour. A simple hello would do just fine.” Steve's neighbour tells him with a smirk on his face. Although it seems like a joke, Steve's stomach drops. Did he read the signs wrong?
The teasing and all that? The smiles and the shy looks while they walk past each other in the hallway? Steve's smile falters. “I… I am sorry, I …. Am just gonna….” He doesn't finish his sentence, just turns around and walks towards his door when he feels a hand on his shoulder.
He turns and looks into the stranger's eyes, who seems… unsure?
They stare at each other, which seems to become a thing when they meet in the staircase.
Before Steve can react, the handsome stranger leans into him with a mumbled “here goes nothing”. Steve is too stunned to do anything except kiss the man back in the middle of the hallway.
When they break apart, breathless, Steve finds he is smiling and his heart is running in full circles in his chest. Lost for words, he dives in for another breathtaking kiss and hears a chuckle coming from the other man.
After they stand there kissing, footsteps make them jump apart.
“Bucky.” Steve hears his neighbour saying.
“My name. I am Bucky.” The other man, Bucky, tells Steve. “I thought, before I invite you in I should tell you my name.” Just like that, Bucky walks through the door to his apartment and waits for Steve to follow. He smiles, steps in and closes the door.
Since this is a short work, why not put the whole story up? @kahey2804's such a sweet author, they deserve it!
