your abuser could have gone thru life without abusing you. this was an option all along. they didn’t have to hurt you, they didn’t have to be cruel, they didn’t have to declare themselves an authority for what is and isn’t good for you and decide that abuse is what you deserve, they didn’t have to manipulate you, they didn’t have to lie to you, they didn’t have to insult, criticize or humiliate you, they didn’t have to control you, they didn’t have to crush your self confidence, they didn’t have to scare or hit or push or torture or gaslight you, they didn’t have to do any of it. they could have gone thru their life without doing it. nobody forced them to do it. it was their own decision to do those things. they are the sole person responsible for doing all of it. they would have lost nothing if they didn’t do those things. it wouldn’t take anything away from their life not to destroy yours. hold. them. responsible.
“I cannot make you understand. I cannot make anyone understand what is happening inside me. I cannot even explain it to myself.” - Franz Kafka, The Metamorphosis
Identity Crisis // these are my poems.
To the girl who tries to be strong everyday,
You are doing it right. You always show to everyone that you are fighting hard after breaking down a million times, as if nothing's wrong, as if you do not need anyone's help. You are fighting hard to be the person everyone wants and expects you to be, and it is okay with you, they have never heard you complain.
You're a woman with a big and beautiful heart. You are fighting battles you can't even discuss with anyone because you do not want to be a burden. You try to be strong and help everyone when you, yourself, is helpless, you give encouragement to those who need it when you, yourself, need it the most. You always put other people first and they don't even notice it. You have told yourself that you have no right to rest and that you have to always fight for those you love, at all cost.
Brave heart, I want you to know that God is seeing the narrative of your life. He sees every tears you wipe before you step out of your room and smile like you weren't crying yourself to sleep last night. He sees how hard you try to be alright in front of those you love but you are dying to cry your heart out. He sees how heavy your chest is, He sees how much you bear the pain. He hears your silent cries, He knows you are afraid everytime people would ask you what's happening and you won't find the right answers.
Beloved, I want you to know that it is okay to be okay. It is okay to rest and give yourself space from everything that is tearing you apart. It is okay to pause and breathe for a while.
So take heart, woman.
You are making us proud.

& if you do fall apart?
darling, I’ll make you into
the most beautiful mosaic
to ever walk the earth & if
you ever get tired of the stars,
we can wish on city lights instead -
if it gets dark I’ll be there if you
need me - lay your head on my
chest & tell my heartbeat about
your day - the only nothing I know
to be true:
I’m less without you

“And I’d choose you; In a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality, I’d find you and I’d choose you.”

The Irritating Gentleman - Berthold Woltze
1874
why does this communicate the universal mood we women experience so perfectly
This is doubly annoying because she’s clearly in mourning; look at her clothes. those are mourning clothes. The way she clutches her handkerchief. The wetness of her eyes. She’s not a lark to the seaside, she’s traveling to or from a funeral. And this dandy fuckboy can’t look beyond his own nose and have some fucking respect.
This is why I support artists. You can tell a story without any words at all. You don’t even need to title this piece “The Irritating Gentleman” and yet most 21st Century women will know exactly what this 19th Century woman endured on the day of that painting.
The young lady is even meeting the eyes of the viewer, as if to say (in a less amusing way than I may explain here) “Look - see what is being done to me, what I must endure. I, who am in mourning for the sudden death of _______, my love. This man who has four eyes somehow cannot look beyond his own nose and curiosity to notice my woe. Please, viewer, see me, for this man does not.”

when it’s over try to be soft. don’t let yourself come undone in front of him. save it for when you’re in your room alone after you’ve left his house for the last time. don’t tell him you love him one last time in the hopes that it’ll change his mind. it won’t. don’t put yourself through the deafening silence of him being unable to say it back or to say anything back other than “i’m sorry”. because his apology is more than just “i’m sorry for what has happened.” it’s “i’m sorry that i don’t love you anymore” and “i’m sorry that i can’t choose you” and “i’m sorry that even though i know i should regret this right now, all i can feel is relief.” please, don’t put yourself through anymore pain. when it’s over, just leave. respect yourself enough to know that there is someone better who will stay. don’t force someone to tell you that they don’t love you when you already know. don’t try and change someone’s mind about you. when it’s all gone and all you have are the memories trust that your love was real, it just wasn’t meant to last forever. and that’s okay. when you have to leave and walk away know that you don’t want a love that won’t stay. you don’t want a love you have to beg for. when you’re alone in you’re room coming undone just know that he has done you a favour. because there is someone out there who would do anything to be with you. and you’ll find them eventually. it just isn’t him.
let him go.
“I know it is hard enough to love me. I know that better than you do. I know that better than anyone else.”
