Why did you give the last of your food to that poorly disguised mimic? You were finally at peace with letting go, but now this odd thing won’t leave you alone and is even turning itself into various items in an attempt to aid you.
"I just thought he was kinda cute, you know? And he was clearly very hungry."
The Mimic was now following them in the shape of a wheel, kind of odd to see a wagon wheel rolling along on its own but it had used stranger forms before.
"You can't seriously intend to keep that thing, what are you even gonna do with it?" Sam glances back at the Mimic warily.
"I'm sure he could be helpful in a fight, and he's so cute I couldn't just leave him behind. Just look at that cute face!"
"It's a wagon wheel. Where even is its face?"
"Oh you're no fun, he's harmless, he probably would have eaten you by now if he was going to, especially with the way you've been talking about him." Rey rolls her eyes before turning to adress the Mimic, "We're getting close to the town, could you turn into a cat or something?"
The Mimic morphs into a cat-like thing with too many teeth and the wrong proportions, the eyes too big and the ears too small. It could pass as long as no one looked too closely.
Sam gives it a horrified look, "Oh, yeah that's way better, I'd much rather be seen with a demon cat than a self-rolling wagon wheel."
"Just try to stay out of sight okay? We'll come find you when we're done in town." Rey gives it an encouraging look as they get to the top of the hill and the town appears ahead of them.
The Mimic tilts its strange cat head, seeming to understand. It wanders off as they get close to the town and disappears into the shadows.
"Rey, we cannot keep a Mimic as a pet, it'll be nothing but trouble."
"Oh come on, he's been good this whole time."
"Only because you fed him! We don't have much gold left, what happens when we run out and can't feed it anymore? I'm not going hungry to keep a Mimic from eating me, we should have killed it when we first came across it."
"It'll be fine Sam, let's get our supplies and get back on the road before anyone gets suspicious."
After finishing their shopping Rey wanders around town looking for the Mimic with Sam following her begrudgingly.
"Where did he go..."
"Who knows, maybe it's eating someone's cat."
"You're always so negative, can't you just help me look?"
"And get eaten by the thing when it decides its hungry again? No way."
Rey sighs as she goes back to searching the alley, "Come here boy! Where'd you go?"
After a while they end up back on the main road through town.
"Good job Rey, you set a wild Mimic loose in a poor unsuspecting town. It was obviously using you."
"No he's a good boy, he just got lost. We haven't checked over there yet come on."
Sam grabs her arm as she starts walking off in a different direction. "Face it, we're not gonna find the thing unless it wants us to, and it clearly doesn't because we would have found it by now. Let's just get a room at the inn and get some rest."
Rey tries to tug her arm away, "No! He's a good boy! He just got lost!"
"Rey, you're acting like a child and making a scene. Let's go."
She struggles for a few more minutes before finally giving up and following Sam with her head down. Once they get to the room at the inn she slumps down onto the bed. Sam sits in the chair and looks out the window.
"I'm sorry, Rey, but you know Mimics aren't friendly, you couldn't have kept it anyways."
She lays down facing the wall and doesn't respond.
"Alright then, good night."
Sam makes himself a makeshift bed on the floor with the spare blanket and they go to sleep.
He tosses and turns with strange dreams of tables eating his hands and his shoes eating his feet. Everything in his dream was a Mimic.
The sound of footsteps awakes him and he sits up, looking around the dark room everything seems normal, Rey is sound asleep on the bed. He lays down and almost falls back to sleep when a strange cat-like thing comes up to him and curls up by his side.
Since I just saw a post on this and since I work in food service now:
Guys, being a regular and ordering the same thing every time you come in is absolutely fine.
Literally no one is going to be side-eyeing you. The fact of the matter is we have other stuff going on.
That’s not a put-down or anything. I try to make sure all the customers who interact with me feel like they’re our most important customer. However, we are busy and often people just sort of slip by unnoticed.
When I do think about regulars that come into the store, it’s not usually: “Oh my God, I can’t believe they come to Panera every day. Yikes, so cringe.” It’s usually: “I wonder how John is doing. I hope his coffee was alright. I had to get it in a bit of a rush today because of all the to-go orders.”
And I really want to scream this from the rooftops because I had a guy just a couple of weeks ago say how embarrassed he felt for always ordering the same thing. That he felt ashamed of being so predictable. Meanwhile, I’m just glad he didn’t order something we don’t have (looking at you Panera wraps) and that he’s not yelling at me.
You know what’s cringe? Getting snippy with Panera employees because we don’t have the thing you wanted. You know what’s cringe? Complaining about the prices to me when I can’t afford to eat at this restaurant without the associate’s discount. You know what’s cringe? Yelling at Panera employees because you’ve had a bad day and they made the mistake of working in retail.
That’s cringe. Eating the same sandwich every day? Not a problem. If you get noticed for it at all, it will be: “Oh, thank God, I know what to do with this one and have a low probability of getting yelled at.” Most of the time though, it’ll be the barista trying to remember everything you ordered, double checking the receipt to make sure they got it right, and then handing you the order before moving on to the next one. Because, let’s face it, you’re the twenty-sixth person to order a bagel with plain cream cheese this shift and the orders start blurring together after about the fifth one.
I also work in food/customer service and this is sooo true. When people come in that order the same thing all the time usually I'm pretty proud of myself for remembering them. We don't want them to be embarrassed we just want them to feel like we care enough to remember.
