Hot take (maybe): while Azula is a bad friend, Mai and Ty Lee aren’t much better. It’s not just the betrayal - it’s how they never really treat her as a person. Because she appears confident, they assume she has no problems, never questioning things like her “monster” comments, her issues with her mother, or even moments like her family portrait being burned. She’s simply dissmissed as “perfect,” and that’s the end of it.

Meanwhile, Azula somewhat helps them work through their issues and even creates bonding moments, while keeping her distance - yet all the credit somehow goes to the island.

And their betrayal isn’t just personal - it also has consequences for her position as their commander, how Ozai might punish her for losing control over them, something they never seem to consider.

In the end, all three of them are pretty bad friends - not just Azula.
