But that never happens.

Ursa being “powerless” during Azula’s childhood is one thing. Fine. The comics bend over backwards to excuse her back then.

But what’s her excuse now?

She’s the mother of the Fire Lord. Her son is best friends with a literal demi-god. Before that, Zuko spent a year obsessively searching for Ursa, even before asking Ozai for help, and willingly abandoned his political duties to do it. If Ursa truly wanted Azula found, she had every resource imaginable to make it happen.

Instead? She seems perfectly comfortable living her peaceful luxurious new life while Azula disappears off to the woods, unwell and alone.

And every time Azula comes up, Ursa immediately reaches for excuses. The academy corrupted her. Ozai ruined her. Anything to avoid the more uncomfortable question: why doesn’t she actually want her back?

The comics unintentionally make this painfully obvious. Ursa loves Zuko instinctively, actively and relentlessly. With Azula, it’s guilt management at best.

Flip the situation for a sec. If Azula were Fire Lord, Ozai gone, and Zuko mentally unwell and missing, does anyone seriously think Ursa would just shrug and move on with Azula & her new family? Of course not. She’d push heaven and earth to find him. Because she loves him.
