Kimmelot and ITV America Collaborate
Set To Produce Unscripted Content
Press Release 3/29/19
Gainesville, FL, 3/29/19, Tumblr (swampstratcomm-sp19), “Kimmelot pairs with ITV America”
A huge trend in news on C21Media is the BAFTA nominations and all of the programs that are up for nomination. For example, Killing Eve has received a best drama nomination which is a first since it was commissioned by a US broadcaster and would normally go into the international category. As always there is international expansion reported all over the trade journal. For example, Black Widows is a series from Finland and is now headed to Ukraine following six other international remakes. The show is also now being considered for China and India. Another notable article is that of Kimmelot, a media company that may not be that well know but has major ties.
Kimmelot is a media company that Brent Montgomery and Jimmy Kimmel founded last year. Kimmelot is collaborating with ITV America to produce lots of unscripted content such as Crank Yankers. Montgomery is the former CEO of ITVAmerica so this collaboration is no surprise. Crank Yankers has been ordered by Comedy Central and they requested 20 episodes of 30-minutes. The show is centered around puppets who are explicit and prank people anytime and anywhere. Clive Whittingham says, “Jonathan Kimmel serves as showrunner and executive producer, alongside exec producers/creators Jimmy Kimmel, Adma Carolla and Daniel Kellison. ITV America’s George also serves as exec producer.” Crank Yankers is the first series from Kimmelot.
Some major insights from this article is that a helpful tool in the television industry is collaboration. Sometimes in order to produce the best content, companies must team up with one another and use their strengths to create content that is amazing. For a company like Kimmelot it makes sense that they would need a larger company to help them create their first show since they are just starting in this industry.

Israeli Autism Show Is Set To Be Adpated For Amazon
Autism Awareness Is On The Rise
Press Release 3/15/19
Gainesville, FL, 3/15/19, Tumblr (swampstratcomm-sp19), “Amazon, Katims adapt Israeli autism show.”
Throughout the trade journal this week there has been a lot of trends in the news. A lot of shows are being canceled due to low ratings. For example, Netflix pulled the plug on their show One Day at a Time. The show ran for three seasons but it was ultimately not drawing in enough viewers. Another trend in the news was a lot of TV shows are also being rolled out. A&E and Netflix are both bringing out new series for example. A&E is producing a new show all based around rescue services. Another notable show that is coming out is On the Spectrum and it is being adapted from Israel for Amazon Studios.
On the Spectrum is centered around three roommates, on the autism spectrum, who are in their 20s as they balance work, social time, and romance. The show originally hails from Israel and is a comedy-drama. The show is being adapted by Jason Katims who is in charge of True Jack Productions. It is a subsidiary of Universal TV, however, Katims is set to leave Universal TV by the end of this year due to a deal he made with Apple. This show has a personal meaning to Katims because his son has Asperger syndrome. Richard Middleton said, “On the Spectrum is the second autism-focused Israeli drama to be remade on the international market after the BBC in the UK remade Keren Margalit’s Yellow Peppers as The A Word.”
Some major takeaways from this article are that autism awareness shows are on the rise. As well as the fact that Israeli shows are also successful internationally when adapted. Shows like this are so important to the autism community and bringing awareness to the reality of autism.

Mindy Kaling Goes Exclusive With Warner Bros
Kaling Signs Multi-year Deal
Press Release 2/22/19
Gainesville, FL, 2/8/19, Tumblr (swampstratcomm-sp19), “Mindy Kaling signs Warner Bros overall deal”
Throughout the trade journal this week there has been a lot of monumental news. Firstly, in general there have been a lot of changes in administration. As with the trend in these past few trade journals in this industry there are always people coming and going in the upper level positions. To get more specific there were several articles concerning the crossover between internet creators and the TV industry. For example, Studio71 is set to launch a new reality set around creators living in a London mansion creating content. This recent trend of creators and TV working together sets a promising tone for the future. In addition, there has also been an emphasis this week on popular stars and their accomplishments. C21Media highlighted many stars such as Pantaya Game who is set to launch her original series The Game of Keys later this year.
The largest celebrity talked about this week was Mindy Kaling. She has just signed a very exclusive multi-year deal with the television section of Warner Bros. Kaling is charge of the screenwriting, development, and production of a variety of genres of content. These genres include: unscripted, comedy, drama, longform, and event scripted. The content will be made for all platforms including digital. Kaling International will be working with lots of departments of Warner Bros to produce new series. Specifically, Warner Bros International Television Distribution will be working towards programming worldwide. This is Kaling’s first deal with the media giant, but she has worked for high-profile productions before. She sold her comedy feature Late Night for $13M to Amazon. She also penned 24 episodes of the classic show The Office and claimed six Emmy nominations. John Elmes wrote, “Prior to signing with Warner Bros, Kaling had been involved with a string of high-profile productions and was creator, exec producer and star of Fox and Hulu comedy The Mindy Project.”
Some major takeaways from this week is collaboration. Whether that be in the form of creators transitioning their work to the television industry. It is exciting to see this collaboration and for creators to garner the respect that they deserve for their hard work. In the past there has been a battle between traditional vs. internet media, but this is a step in the right direction. Another takeaway is that celebrities are trailblazers and are not always just actors but also can work in all aspects of television.

Smithsonian Channel is Launching in the United Kingdom
The Mission to Go World Wide
Press Release 2/8/19
Gainesville, FL, 2/8/19, Tumblr, “Smithsonian to launch in UK”
This week on C21Media there were a lot of changes in administration in terms of the boards of different channels. There also was many articles speaking upon the creation of documentaries and it seems there are a lot more in the making then usual. Above all, the most interesting reads were expansions of channels going worldwide. It seems to be easier for American channels to start their expansion in Europe and then proceed with the rest of the world.
The Smithsonian Channel is on a new journey to expand into Europe and then hopefully move on to more international expansion. The channel is shared between CBS Showtime Networks and the Smithsonian Institute. With this new expansion the Smithsonian has created several original content to play on their new UK channel. One of the more noteworthy shows is When Tariq Ali Met Malcom X; the show will be based around Malcolm X, an advocate for black power, and his astounding speech given at Oxford Union around the 1960s. While there are new programs for the English to watch and love, the Smithsonian channel will also be playing shows from the United States. All of the programming for this channel will be done by the US team which is led by David Royle. Royle says, “It’s been very carefully planned and thought through because we know we’re going into a competitive market, we know we’re going into a country with a long history of non-fiction filmmaking.” They have been very meticulous with the chosen programming and hope to do well in this new market.
This article was the most interesting to read this week due to many reasons. I learned a lot of new jargon and language in the Television Industry from this such as slate and prodcos. The article broke down all of the new content that was going to be offered and it was intriguing to see how it plays to this market rather than the original one in the United States. The Smithsonian Institution itself is based in Washington D.C. and at first it seemed odd that they would want to go international, however this article proved that they deserve success in the international market. Another insight is that they are not rookies and have worked with BBC and other British networks before so they know what works and does not in this market.

A New Streaming Service is on the Rise
Viacom buys PlutoTv
Press Release: 1/25/19
Gainesville, 1/25/19, C21Media, “Viacom buys PlutoTV for $340m”
The trade publication topic centers around streaming services and their expansions, additions, and victories. Major traditional media companies such as Viacom are buying into the 21st Century and joining a world of streaming services. The market is expanding day by day and new streaming services are on the rise. With this week there has been a direct focus on PlutoTV, Netflix, and Hulu. While PlutoTV is not nearly as large or well-known as the other two giants, it shows a promising future through Viacom’s recent purchase.
Viacom buying PlutoTV is particularly interesting because it is a streaming service in Europe with over 12 million monthly users; also PlutoTV offers over 100 channels in the United States and additional on-demand content. It was founded in 2013 and has expanded greatly since. A huge reason why they bought Viacom is the ever-changing world of television. Richard Middleton states, “The MTV and Comedy Central owner is looking to combat the rise of cord-cutters in the US in particular after seeing its shares plummet over the past five years.” PlutoTV is supported by ads similarly to that of Hulu. Through this purchase, Viacom hopes to be able to compete in the video marketplace and offer services at a variety of prices which may include free options.
This purchase has solidified the presence and validation of streaming services in our modern world. The world of television and traditional cable is changing and transforming. Streaming services are clearly a valuable resource to own and have as an asset due to the rise of the Internet in the 21st Century. This is seen in Viacom’s drop in shares, and it’s recent undesirability. It speaks volumes that in order to save a slowly sinking ship Viacom thought it was best to invest in a new streaming service. While it is such a new streaming service compared to Hulu or Netflix it has had a promising beginning with over 12 million monthly users. The future of streaming services looks bright.

Metro Trains- Dumb Ways to Die
Dumb Ways to Die is such a fascinating ad campaign to me due to its social engagement. I’m not sure the creators anticipated to reach such a large audience. Currently on YouTube the video has been watched over one hundred seventy-four million times. The target audience was Metro users and an older audience due to the dark lyrics, but it also reached young audiences who were unaware of the actual advertisement at first.
