STRANGER THINGS 5 SPOILERS
Okay guys we lost I guess
I’m so confused like genuinly what was the point of all the lead up, the paralleling of other canon couples, the paralleling of other movies that had endgame couples, the foreshadowing, the camera shots focusing on Mike during queer discussions. All of that and so much more just for it to be boiled down to “Gay guy doesn’t get his best friend but it’s okay he’s over it”
This is such a let down because something so beautiful could’ve come from it. I’m so dissapointed because why would the Duffers drag out a slow burn for so long just to put an abrupt end to it. Even with the supposed cut scenes, byler still would’ve been bones.
Honestly Byler aside, Wills coming out and being gay was handled so poorly that I’m not even happy about it anymore like I slightly was in vol 2. I could’ve excused the crazy big coming out party he had because it was plot relevant, he needed to reveal his secret in confidence so Vecna didn’t use it against him. The “me too!” was cringy but HEY at least we got a coming out scene shown in a positive light. But no, Vecna DIDNT EVEN BRING IT UP. There was NO PLOT RELEVANCE.
It just feels like the coming out happened purely to make the fans happy and nothing else. “Hey! We added representation! Look at us go!” But it was bad because who gets over a multiple year crush within a few days because of one lesbian pep talk. This coupled with the foreshadowing of Byler to have no payoff felt so cheap. I don’t feel represented at all anymore as a queer person.
What I see when I look at Will Byers is a cop out of representation. His queerness was used as a draw in for a queer audience then not acknowledged again until a quick shot in the epilogue after the emotional part was over.
And yeah, Stranger Things isn’t a romance, it’s a Sci-Fi, but that doesn’t negate the fact that multiple romances in the series have been heavily built on and developed between the scary parts.
In terms of Mike, nothing about this makes sense to me. Like I said just the camera work, focusing, parallels, and lighting pointed to reciprocated but repressed feelings. His character was so pushed to the side this season that I feel it would’ve been great to explain this with his conflicting if feelings for Will. His character in itself was so thrown away, but also his actions leading up to every season creating more tension just to be “Uhmm… we’re best friends!” I can’t express how annoyed I am. It’s just so cheap.
Again, why all that lead up just to make Will easily get over his crush? This wasn’t a Tammy hallway crush, this was years long with a best friend. The two just aren’t comparable. Will was literally asking for advice on signs a crush likes you back, then we were TOLD then SHOWN signs that Mike liked Will back. Just for it to be all for nothing? The shared look? The bump of the knee? The friendly pushes? I can’t genuinly believe that all that was done to be shown as friendly, I truly think this was baiting to get hopes up because no way there was such a sudden switch between that. Especially without Mikes POV on anything.
But the more I think about it, the Duffers literally get their own facts in the show wrong. Considering Wills birthday being forgotten, Melvads Milkshakes being wrong, and other plot holes, i’m not suprised they didn’t realize that they wrote a heavily queer character.
In a show about outcasts, the writers had an opportunity to make queer love, a heavily challenged and hated topic nowadays, into something of power rather than weakness. But instead they pushed this love to the side, opting for a quick wrap up after it was acknowledged and left to collect dust in leu of an ending that was so fanservicy it left me dizzy.
edit: also where was the mention of the painting? did we just get straight lied to because that painting wasn’t brought up once.
