The Burger still gets made, even if you go Vegan. If you don’t buy it, it just winds up in the trash. If you want to do something meaningful about waste, you need legislation: It must become a crime to waste food in those ways.

If you care about Animal Cruelty in Factory Farms, you need to get legislation passed. It must become a crime to mistreat animals in those ways, and when malfeasances occurs, the onus of responsibility for those crimes must fall upon wealthy shoulders. That, also, requires legislation. It requires regulations, and regulators.

The largest source of Microplastics is wear and tear on automobile tires. It doesn’t matter what brand of shampoo you buy. It doesn’t matter which company you support with your dollar. The issue of Public Transit is too large-scale to be handled at anything less than the municipal level.

It’s not enough to just not participate in society

If you want the world to Change, you must leverage the mechanisms of political power.

You need Government.

It’s very very important to me that Tony Stark literally wears his heart on the outside. His heart is the most vulnerable part of him. And at least in IM1, it is actually the only real part of him that is visible through the suit. His heart is his biggest vulnerability in the suit. His heart powers the entire suit. His heart is the reason behind Iron Man.

Furthermore, his heart is disguised as just another piece of tech. It blends in with the suit. Anyone looking at him from the outside just sees it as part of the suit. In reality, his heart is the most human thing there and people will never see past those plates of hot red metal.

Something I just noticed and should be appreciated about Remember the Titans was how much the families break stereotypes and push the messages further.

The first thing we see is Sheryl Yoast, the coach’s daughter, almost more passionate than sports than her father. Later, her passion for sports (tom-girlish-ness) makes Boone’s daughter think she’s weird because Nicky is more into dolls and stereotypically female interests. Later, Boone makes an honestly rude comment about buying Sheryl dolls, indicating he’s not immune to biased, harmful comments. Not only does this movie address some heavy racial issues, but also very subtly, gender roles and sports.

When we first meet Boone, in the first five minutes, we see how dedicated of a family man he is. During the course of the movie, this house is a source of refuge. When Sheryl is over, right before the attack on the house, there is nothing suggesting any of them feel unsafe whatsoever. This offers a rebuttal to the common trope of “absent black father” narrative that we’re often exposed to. (Which we see later between two of the players “you got a daddy?” Assuming a black player doesn’t have a dad in the picture). Not to mention when the attack actually occurs, we see Boone prioritize the safety of those around him.

This movie has so many overt and subtle messages that are a study into our past and current social situations that every time I watch it there’s more to appreciate.

One of my favorite things about Remarkably Bright Creatures - surprisingly the movie even more so than the book - is that Tova seems to consider Cameron her grandson long before she finds out that he's literally her grandson. She instinctively decides to look out for him because he's lost and has no one, and she knows he needs her. She makes cleaning solution for his van. She shows him how to clean the aquarium properly and teaches him how to handle Marcellus. She gets him out of a parking ticket. She listens to him talk about his life when nobody else really has before. She nags him about asking Avery out on a date and then arranges the date herself when he keeps dragging his feet. She encourages him to play at open mic night and then shushes the bar patrons because "damn it that's my boy shut up and listen to him!!!!" No matter what she would've continued treating him like family because from the moment they met, he was family to her. Finding out they were related all along is just an added bonus
