heyyyy i was wondering do you have any domestic/soft headcanons about cameron?
hello!!!
yeth, i do!
cameron cassmore x masc reader domestic headcanons
cameron is someone who before the beginning of the relationship, when you're just talking is fun. and i think once you're established, it's fun too, but that in-between bit can be difficult.
before you're together, i think he's a bit awkward, in a not knowing to not say that type of way.
this isn't as present in the movie, but it's kind of implied cameron has some kind of special interest/hyperfixation with animals. specifically reptiles and aquatic life. several times through out the book he just spouts or thinks about random factoids that he can't remember why he knows. at a few points, he brushes it off as 'i prolly googled it out of curiosity'. it's something he rattles off when relevant (aunt jeanne's garden, a few times at the aquarium). and tends to think about when he's idle. i think it's something that would come out when he's nervous as well, so every date you leave with at least a handful of factoids.
i don't think he's good at deciphering the difference between a date and a hangout with someone who's romantically interested, so a lot of the (rare) dates he plans are much much more casual. like coffee dates don't really occur to him. he's more of a 'go to the supermarket and watch the live lobsters fight' date kind of guy. there's a fic someone wrote about him bringing you to the aquarium after hours. it's gender neutral, i believe. and the way that's written/how it plays how feels incredibly on brand for him. and if you plan more formal dates, i don't think he's opposed, i just don't think cameron would think of that.
after you're in a relationship, once he comfortable, feels like he has his footing, i think he's someone who gets weird about his partner a little quicker than most. in that way most couples do. he likes to bother you. do bits and little jokes to himself to an while you're turned away. like he's deeply unserious with his person, i do believe that. he'll ask if anyones home and interrupt with a 'huh?' when you start answering. oh, you were writing something? he took the pencil. you're doing something and don't notice? he'll mime a one-sided fight with you. sometimes he'll just follow you around your place, noodling on his guitar. he stands in front of shows your watching. he'll decline to watch a movie, only to join you halfway through with a list of questions. some of them are on purpose, some of them aren't. the line between which is which is impossible to make out.
i do think he likes to keep busy. i think he general has a hard time sitting still. if he can't find a little home project to start (or god forbid, the apartment complex won't allow him to just fix whatever he finds - from experience they tend to not like that), he'll just follow you. bother you with questions, fill the silence with random thoughts or whatever he's been researching recently. if he can ever get around the 'nerd shit' of it all i think he'd really like ttrpgs, or card games like mtg. i doubt he'd play much, but the systems themselves would be fun for him to learn about. it'd be another thing for him to ramble at you about. bc there's a good bit of that in your relationship. any information he comes across that he's excited about or thinks you'll find interesting is rambled at you at least once or twice. more if you don't stop him, let him know he told you already. he has a fantastic memory for information, just not things he's said.
you never have to trick him into doing shit, he's an adult. pretty avoidant when he doesn't wanna do something. like he might say the word no but you can tell when a ill get to it is a im not doing that. if you're already doing chores or something around the house he's been putting off and he's following you, rambling, he's going to help. he'll barely notice it's happening, far too focused on you. talking to you. watching how you look at him, to notice he's done most of the dishes or taken out the trash.

i have my gripes with the movie (adored the actors, had some issues with some of the story changes, mainly cutting aunt jeanne - a lot of them were solid tho), but i also adore the book, so i am biased. that being said, the lore/cameron's personality will be a combination of the book and the movie (admittedly, it is pretty book heavy for his personality)
there will be tags for each ramble - i recommend reading them before reading that section.
reader will always be presumed to top, when relevant.
this is not fully edited, so my bad if some parts are confusing. i was super fucking excited and couldn't wait to get it out, so i didn't go over it as many times as i usually do
how his relationship with a man (you) starts/develops
cw: spoilers for the book, mentions of his mom and her whole deal, cameron's general (but incredibly minor) dirtbaggery
listen man, if nothing else, cameron's a fucking loser. and to be so real with you, i think the movie went a little light on him, he's a much bigger loser in the book. he's kind of rocco-light (who has a hc section in this part). like he's not the worst and he's charming. clearly cares about people the best way he can, but he is pretty selfish and i think those traits and how they manifest are explored better in the book. for that reason, the canon i will be going by (here but also prolly any/most future fics of cameron i write) will a mesh of the parts of from the book and movie that i felt were the strongest. because, like, you have to have aunt jeanne. i think she's such an important part of the book. she's such a fun character and i love their interactions. she's selfless and supportive, and he does try to be less of dick because of her. and arguably for her. in the book, she's how he gets the ring, however i do kinda love the van being his mom's.
he's another one of the characters that have a few different ways you could start. canonically, cameron is broken up with for being a huge bum in the book. and honestly that could be where you start. instead of katie, there's you. maybe you stay, maybe you don't. it's on the fuckin' rocks if you do stay and if you don't, he's constantly trying to prove himself to you. that he is responsible, or at least becoming more responsible. he'd try to keep you updated with aunt jeanne about how he's doing, how he landed a job, how he's kept it (until he doesn't, but you don't need to know that until the next job comes along and then he'll tell you every little detail you never cared about).
in the book, he when the van breaks down, he has to ask aunt jeanne for money to fix it and is stressed about making back the money to pay her back. it's not a huge plotline in the book, but an important one for cameron. it's one of his motivations throughout the story. but i do think it'd be somewhat significant to your relationship. something he'd be careful not to mention until he pays her back, if at all. doesn't even mention he pays it back with guessimated interest (because he does that in the book, despite aunt jeanne not asking, and fully not expeacting to be paid back), if it happens to come up. i think, if you were together before the events of rbc, it's not until after the events, after you consider him a friend again, after you care or trust him enough to visit. getting confirmation from aunt jeanne and tova (and ethan) that's he's still cameron, but a little stable. a little more thoughtful. more conscious of what he does and says, before you consider dating him again.
it's a more complicated route emotionally, but pretty straightforward narratively. cameron's a guy with a lot of things to prove and a lot of growth to go through, so you become another person to prove himself to. another motivator to get his shit together. it'd be a slow burn in him earning your trust.
if your not together before rbc, before he comes to sowell bay, the beginning of your relationship isn't disimiliar from rocco's, in that it was supposed to be a one night stand and then it wasn't. cameron also differs in that he just kind of skips the complicated relationship to his sexuality. i just can't really see that being a part of cameron's deal. he's from cali with a really grounded support system. elizabeth and brad have known him since middle school, there's no way they don't know. and like he doesn't have much family pre-rbc (or after, really), it pretty much is just him and aunt jeanne and i simply can't imagine that woman giving a damn.
all of this is to say, if you meet after he heads up to sowell bay, you start as a very uncomplicated hook up.
you live in the bay or around it, and cameron doesn't meet you until after that damned van breaks down in the parking lot of shop-way and it's towed off to the mechanic ethan suggested. after he came the bay with jack shit and somehow finds himself sitting on the curb, outside of mechanics's shop that's definitely going to gouge the price of these repairs, with than less than what he came with
when cameron's pissed.
and he can't really call anyone.
he doesn't want to worry aunt jeanne. doesn't want her assuming he needs money. again. because she would send it and later, when he's desperate enough to get over the guilt of it, he will. and he'll hate that she doesn't expect it back. that she never believes him when he tells her he will get it back to her. a more realistic part of him knows it's for the best she doesn't believe him. that she sees him for the unreliable kid he is, that she saves herself the pain of his false promises. still fucking blows. it's not great for his ego. and despite how encouraging elizabeth and brad were for him to travel, they had given it to him straight. his mom's van was a piece of shit and he should've sold it or tried to trade it in when how shitty it was was less obvious. but he didn't, convinced it'd make the trip.
so, pissed and desperately staving of the guilt that call to aunt jeanne will hold, cameron skips over the messaging app and settles on grindr. he doesn't really feel like talking right now, anyway.
there's incredibly few things cameron is really looking for at the moment and you just happen to sate all of them. and/or, more importantly, you respond the quickest. he doesn't really bother responding to most of the other messages after he's got a hook up set up with you. there might be two or three he messages, just to keep them interested. just in case this falls through with you.
luckily, it doesn't and dick has always been good stress relief.
and he has a place to stay for his first night in sowell bay. a place he didn't have to pay for. which ends up being pretty inconsequential. ethan was going to offer his couch until cameron got his van back, even lets him park it there after he has it back. all news cameron was too impatient to wait for.
regardless, he forgets about you, only really considers pulling your profile back up when he's at his limit. when he's stressed or another thing falls through. when he thinks about his ex. there might be another night or two he end up in your bed again, but that's it for a while.
it's after he gets his van back, after he starts living in ethan's driveway in exchange for a bit of handiwork. fixing doorframes and leaky faucets and the like (not that ethan said he has to, cameron more just decided he'd do as much as he could around the house). after he's working at the aquarium. after he meets tova, and learns how to do all the cleaning shit the right way, begrudgingly admitting to no one but himself that she's right about most things she corrects him on. still bickers with her though. she's cool and it passes the time. it's after cameron meets avery. after he fucks things up with her something horrendous. i think that's the first time he actually does message you about anything more than another hook up. not that he doesn't intend for there to be one, just wants to grab drinks first. to feel like he's not a total loser, like he's capable of talking to people. that he can still flirt and be charming, even if it's kind of cheating because the person he's trying it on with wants to get in his pants. and it works. partially.
it's a confidence booster.
and you, well. you like cameron. genuinely.
which is not something he was really expecting or anticipated, and i think it takes him a while to figure out how he feels for you. to detangle all the emotional cords surrounding his mom and the man who is decidedly not his father. then the added complications of tova being his grandmother, of his dad being gone long before he was born. that he picked his name. that his mom wasn't exactly the deadbeat he'd always thought she was when he was a kid.
it's a lot and i think he does fully take advantage of the fact you definitively do like him. takes a lot of solace in you and your company before any of the guilt sets in, which it does. after tova and ethan settle whatever's between them. when weekly scrabble has been established, and tova and ethan ask about you. ask when you'll be over.
as a character he can be avoidant when he can be and reluctant when he can't. and i do think he'd be more passive in a relationship with men. less in a submissive way and more in a 'the onus of pursuit should be on the other guy' way. he's much more interested in being pursued than pursuing a man and if you're not someone who's a bit more assertive, if you're not someone's who's willing to put yourself out there and ask him out there the beginning of your relationship, officially, will be contingent on tova having enough of cameron beating around the bush with you.
how his sex life develops with a man (you, again)
cw: my pillow princess cameron truther bullshit, mild kinks
regardless of the route, there is a main throughline and i know it's true in my heart of hearts. cameron's a total pillow princess with men. and i want to make myself clear, there's nothing wrong or inherently selfish about being a pillow princess. it's important to me to state that, so that when i say, there is something deeply selfish about the way in which cameron is a pillow princess, you know he's an outlier.
it's not present so much in the movie, but cameron is a pretty shallow guy when it comes to dating in the book. both women (katie and avery) he's interested in, he primarily focuses on their looks at first. i can only imagine it'd be so much worse with men.
there's certainly an element of vanity - he's pretty naturally built. part of it's genetics, part of it is working manual labor jobs almost his entire adult life. and imaginably he does work to keep himself in relatively good shape. mostly in working out. i'm sure he pays some bit of brainpower to his eating habits. to what he should eat. it's a crapshoot for whether or not he really he does anything with those thoughts. but he keeps himself in good shape. has no problem showing himself off and doesn't mind the attention. that being said, because he knows he's desirable, then i think in his mind of the onus of pursuit is on the person attracted to him. and that selfish mentality bleeds into just about every aspect of how he approaches his romantic relationships. especially sex. (though, i don't think he'd mind, in theory, if you were selfish in bed too. it'd be a dynamic, in his mind, but incredibly hit or miss in practice)
so when you met at whatever party, through whichever friends, off of whatever app - however it happens - cameron picked you based on entirely superficial things. the same things he subconsciously looks for in any guy he gets with. there's no hard and fast rules, exactly. but there's probably certain things he tends to gravitate towards. he's a tall guy, with a good bit of muscle. bigger guys (interpret as you will) are probably a thing for him. what you look like is definitely a factor, his taste ranges, but you're cute. if he thinks so, other things can be ignored. if you meet on grindr or something of the like, how big your dick is no small factor in his interest in you.
cameron seems like someone to me who'd be quick to sleep with someone he's interested in and is probably used to a sexual relationship starting before a romantic one. he doesn't seem like he'd be one for exploring much either. his ideal would just be catching you up on what he likes, because cameron can be kinky. he's another who i kinda doubt has many specific kinks of his own, mostly just a handful of limits and a tolerance for a good chunk of things outside of that. he'd try things if you pushed. it's not quite a todd situation where everything is a 'fuck no and fuck you for asking.' with cameron it's more of a bunch of maybe's and whiny yes's.
i think he does prefer to be in control, prefers to tell you how to fuck him, but doesn't mind giving it up. like, if you're good at being dominant. if you're good at dirty talk. if not, he'll avoid it. and when he can't, it's like pulling teeth. cameron is, despite what he thinks, pretty quick witted and can be a bit of a hothead when he's pushed (ex. the convo with ethan about cam working at the shop from the book). what he's like in a relationship isn't deeply expounded upon, but i can't imagine he's not grating. at least a bit. he's horrendous in a fight. quick to draw unfair arguments and jump to bad faith conclusions wholeheartedly. it dissipates later, when he has time to think it through. but in the moment, if fights don't end in angry sex. with his ass or face (or both) a little pink from your hand, then it ends in cruel words.
generally pain is a no, unless sex is angry. energetic. fueled by something messy. feminization is a no. any sort of watching being watched is a no. rope is a no, but cameron likes being held down on occasion. so is mean degradation. like calling him a slut is fine. but say he's dumb? calling him useless? yeah, go fuck yourself.
overall sound is huge for cameron. how you sound is huge. you could tick none of his boxes, but with the right voice, you do. it's enough. and it's not just your voice or how words carry out in it. how good you sound fucking into him, groaning against his ear, or shoulder. i think he's someone who likes having music on, who has several playlists he's curated for different kinds of sex. for different energies. paces. vibes.
like obviously his connection with music isn't wholly sexual, cameron is passionate about it. loves playing. writing. listening. and one of his favorite ways to connect with it is to feel it. literally. at some point(s) or other(s), he's had speakers. nice ones. the kind that takes a few paychecks to pay for. that keeps that strong bassline he can feel from the base of his spine up to his hairline. it's the closest he can get to live music, most of the time.
if or when you live together, he'll push to lay music through them anytime, to feel each song tingle against his skin when he has you pulled between your legs.
