“There was a time two college age girls late at night knocked on the window of my car. I was at a traffic light and they told me that they had been at a concert and their friends left without them. They were looking for a ride to a bus back to school. I was nervous-- I had never picked up anybody before. I could have said “I’m not getting involved” out of that fear, but instead, thinking of my own children, I decided that there was no way I was going to leave these two young girls on the side of the road. I let them in and took them all the way back to their dorms.”
”People need to take action. We need to hold each other accountable. Say something, you might save a life.”
Welcome to the Just One Photo Challenge, a photo campaign designed to help minimize the bystander effect through inspiring a broader audience to take action, and teaching others through our own stories of times we pushed fear to the side and took action. We post photos from our followers holding up the number 1 with their finger; this represents the one action it takes to move from being a bystander to a positive participant.
Want your voice to be heard? Send in a photo holding up the number 1 with an explanation about why it is important to take action, or with a personal story about a time that you took action to stop someone from going down a bad path. If you want to send in a story but wish to remain anonymous, that is perfectly alright. Thank you to all of our contributors!
** We would like to make note, if the "1" is an inappropriate hand symbol in your culture, please feel free to hold up a paper with the #1 or some other symbol to show your solidarity. We welcome members of all nationalities and faiths. **

My college roommates are two of my closest friends. In fact, we even graduated high school together. One of them had pretty bad anger issues at times. He would talk about doing some pretty serious things like rape and murder and would make an attempt to joke about them. Eventually, it didn’t really seem like he was joking as much as he was being serious. That is when my other roommate and I decided to step in and say something. We talked to him about some of the things he had been saying and talked about how it wasn’t funny. We discussed the effects that saying things like this could have on his relationships and even on how he really viewed things. I love him like a brother, and because of that, I couldn’t sit back and watch him do something that could ruin his life and the lives of others. In the end, he ended up treating girls differently and stopped acting like he was going to do violent things.

10 Notorious Cases of the Bystander Effect^10 Notorious Cases of the Bystander Effect^The bystander effect is the somewhat controversial name given to a social psychological phenomenon in cases where individuals do not offer help in an emergency situation when other people are present. The probability of help has in the past been thought to be inversely proportional to the number of bystanders. In other words, the greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help. This list describes the prototype of the effect and cites nine particularly heinous examples.^FlameHorse

Sticking up for what is right can be difficult at times, especially if it means going against your friends or colleagues. However, you will always feel that you did the right thing when you do stand up for yourselves or others. Sometimes, all it takes is a little courage to be the first one, and others will follow. When you feel someone is going down the wrong path, even just asking them to pause and repeat themselves can be enough to stop someone from saying something they shouldn’t.

Horrifying torture death of 23-year-old Jewish man Ilan Halimi has stunned France; investigators believe at least 20 people participated in abduction and subsequent negotiations for ransom; case seems to embody social problems of immigration, race and class that France has been facing with uncertainty; alleged kidnappers called themselves barbarians and included children of blacks from Africa and Caribbean, North African Arabs, Iranians and whites from Portugal and France; photo (M)
