just not country

So I’m in my major back to school funk.  I always think that I will be fine going back, but then the middle of August rolls around, and I get an awful pit in my stomach.  When I first saw this song on SoundCloud, I was excited because Jai Matt and Dr. Srimix obviously, but then when I heard the Major Lazer bit, I freaked out.  These guys just keep making amazing songs, and this song is my game face for September.

Chill. Gets you in the groove.  I love songs like this where I can just close my eyes and get lost.

This is the type of song that makes you want to write music so you can be nearly as cool as J. Cole is.  I keep coming back to J. Cole after visiting his discography a couple times, but now I’m here to stay.

Honne holds a place very dear to my heart.  The Night got me through my exams, and I listened to Warm On a Cold Night religiously.  Loves the Jobs You Hate is everything I love about Honne, the melancholy sound, man, it’s everything.    

Sometimes, I get so caught up in finding new music that I treat it like its a material good.  I get so caught up in finding the coolest songs and sharing them with others so they know that I have good music taste.  But good music taste has to be for me, not for others.  I’ve stopped enjoying the music, and getting lost in a really good song.  It’s about the quality over the quantity.  It has to be organic for me, or else it all feels fake.  I have to remember what it’s like to enjoy music, and this song does it for me.  Damn, this is a good one.

Lean On is definitely my song of the summer.  You know that feeling when a song is overplayed, but is still really good, and you want to like it still, but you can’t because you’ve heard it so many times?  This cover solves the problem.  

Hailee Steinfeld has an incredible voice and this song showcases it.  The repeating “I Love Me” throughout the song is amazing.  God, right now, I love songs that are about loving yourself.  It’s so true.  I know it’s cliche or whatever, but to be honest, we say things like Love Yourself often, but we never really do it.  It’s time for me to take the time to Love Myself, to be proud of who I am.  I love me.

The first Ben Khan song I heard was Youth, and it was nothing like I’d ever heard before.  I love the way this guy makes music, his voice, his style, all of it.  It’s so original, so refreshing.

So I found this song in the Wintertime, and I know it’s totally late to post right now, but it’s still a classic.  A long time ago, when I saw Jal the Band on Coke Studio, I became obsessed with the band and listened to all of their songs.  Woh Lamhey was my favorite, and I memorize the video (I was so creepy).  The first Zack Knight song I heard was Dheere, and I was hooked.  So when I heard Zack Knight’s Lamhe, it was just perfect.  This song just takes me back to those snowy nights, and is still so good now.  

When I first heard this song, I actually screamed.  Maybe my favorite bollywood song ever, mashed with one of my favorite Summer Hits, and just to top it off, by Jai Matt and Dr. Srimix.  These guys are great.  Right now, I’m loving this track, but their remix of Cheerleader and Lean On are both great tracks as well.

So I first heard this song in a commercial (which let’s be honest, is a fantastic way to find music), and pulled out Shazam as fast as I could but the commercial ended so quickly.  But then, I heard the song again in the show I was watching (PLL, obviously), and I got Shazam out in time (thank GOD).  This song just gets me moving, which I love, and for some reason gets me excited about the future.  I don’t know.  My mind works in funny ways.  

I love the way the voices of Vince Staples and Jhene Aiko come together to make pure gold in this song.  It gets me out of my head, which is just what I need right now.

The lyrics of this song are just beautiful.  Right now, I’m caught in this struggle of trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong with my life.  I have so much ambition, but I can’t do anything with it.  People tell me the ultimate goal in life is to be happy, but I really don’t know what happy is.  For me, happiness is always just validation from others, but that’s not happiness.  And happiness is just another goal for me, another thing for my bucket list.  In this song, W. Darling says, “I’m so caught up hunting happiness, I move so quickly, that it can’t catch me.”  And that captures it all for me.  

This song is the epitome of Summer to me.  When I hear this song, I can just feel the sun beaming down on me, as I lie outside with no stress, just living life.  I’m just closing my eyes and moving to the beat.  So close your eyes, shut the world out, and give this a listen.

When people ask me what my music taste is, I always say, “I like everything, just not country.”  And so this blog was born.
