The Night Before
LĂ©on wakes up exhausted. He thought too much during the previous night. He still doesnât know what to do with Hans, so he decides that he will see what the future brings. With a deep yawn, he stretches and prepares himself for the day. The farms and houses around are now empty and totally raided, he has to go further and further with his bicycle. His little excursions now take most of the day; finding a farm that is abandoned and not yet raided is quite a challenge. All that effort for so little reward. Itâs clear, itâs time to move on to the next place. LĂ©on goes downstairs quietly not to disturb his housemate but he notices Hans already awake, seemingly trying to read a book. Hans has grown desperate for any type of entertainment, being locked up in the farm most of the time these days.Â
LĂ©on breaks the silence,Â
âGood morning Hans, how did you sleep?âÂ
âGood morning LĂ©onie, I slept wonderfully, and you?âÂ
âI didnât sleep much, lots of things to think about. I think we have to take the day to pack so we can leave tomorrow.âÂ
âHo dear, I told you already, but you can come to me if you need company, I donât bite.âÂ
âIt's fine, I needed to be alone. Anyway, can you pack your things while I go on my last trip to the farm? Iâm going to the one I visited last time, I think there are a few things left there, I may have even seen a wine cellarâÂ
âI can do that, as long as you come back⊠to treat my woundsâŠâ Hans smiles coyly.
âYou know I will come back and your wounds are on the mend. But donât worry I will be back soon enough for dinner.âÂ
While Hans starts packing his things, LĂ©on gets on his way to the farm. Thankfully LĂ©on already knows where the farm is and itâs only going to take an hour to reach it. In that hour, LĂ©on has plenty of time to think. He is certainly excited to reach France, it is yet another step closer to England. England, of course, is his final destination; he heard about a man, Micheal Dillon, in the same situation. It seems Micheal received treatment to be more himself. First he took testosterone to look manly and then apparently a surgeon took his story to heart and agreed to remove his breasts. The very idea is making LĂ©on euphoric: he would finally be seen outwardly as the man he is inwardly. But before that he has to be able to reach England, and that is the complicated part.
Even though his focus is mainly on the life he could begin in England, a part of him still thinks of Hans. Where would they be able to find a shelter for Hans to fully recover? How long will it take before Hans is able to leave on his own for Switzerland. Hans has said he has to reach Switzerland as soon as he can travel alone, which did come with an invitation for LĂ©on to come with him to flee the war. It would make sense for them both to go to neutral territory, but it wouldnât be compatible with his own needs to stay with Hans. Still, LĂ©on wonders if he could have both without sacrificing his identity. As tempting as the idea was, particularly as food and supplies are more and more scarce, Leon wonât allow himself to be distracted from his goal; there are too many years gone to stop now. Fortunately, with the way things are going, that goodbye wonât be before a few weeks. There is still plenty of time to think and make a decision before that..Â
As LĂ©on approaches the farm he hears some loud voices. He stops a ways from the farmyard and creeps slowly along at a safe distance. He sees a military Volkswagen parked near the barn. He hears laughter. Theyâre speaking German and LĂ©onâs blood freezes. They seem distracted, no doubt having found the little wine cellar LĂ©on wanted to raid for tonight. LĂ©on can hear a burble of conversation.Â
âHört auf, wie die Schweine zu fressen, es ist Zeit, ihn zu finden!!â
âStop eating like pigs, Itâs time to go find him !!â
âKomm schon, so einen tollen Bauernhof hatten wir schon lange nicht mehr, und auĂerdem ist sonst niemand hier.â
âCome on, we haven't had such a good farm in a while, plus there is no one else around.â
âJa, aber wir hatten den Auftrag, ihn so schnell wie möglich zurĂŒckzubringen.â
âYes but we were tasked to bring him back as soon as possible.â
âSei kein Speichellecker, Hermann, er ist schon seit Wochen weg, wahrscheinlich ist er tot. Er kann noch einen Tag warten.â
âDonât be a boot licker Hermann, he has been gone for weeks now, he is probably dead. He can wait one more dayâÂ
LĂ©on panics, he has to get back to the farm as quickly as he can, they are surely talking about Hans. He is in danger.Â
LĂ©on drops down and crawls to his bicycle, not wanting to be seen. Then he pedals as fast as his legs will go to get back to Hans.Â
When he finally arrives, Hans is out doing God knows what, putting around in the yard in front of the farm. LĂ©on leaps off the bicycle.Â
âHans we have to leave, now !!âÂ
âWait a second, calm down my dear, what happened?âÂ
Leon is winded from his furious ride, he pants,
âThe farm, there were Germans at the farm, they were busy raiding it but I heard them talking or rather yelling about someone they have to bring back.âÂ
âAnd?âÂ
âYou are the only person I have seen in weeks, it can only be you, the deserter.âÂ
âI see, but leaving now will only make us more visible. Knowing German soldiers, and I do, I would say that if they have started to eat and drink this early, they wont start to look before tomorrow. And you are safe if they come here, they only want me.â
âBut I donât want them to take you, I know they donât treat you deserters kindly.â
âBelieve me, it will be ok.â Hans sighs, âAt least I got to meet you before it all fell apart. Tomorrow we will wake up at dawn and we will move. If we stay off of the path, it should be enough to avoid themâŠâ
âAre you sure? they have cars and gunsâŠand everything!â
âWell you have a gun, too, it should be ok.â
âWhat⊠How do youânever mindâŠÂ Are you sure you want to risk it?â
âYes, and I would prefer to leave the farm before dawn and walk the whole day than start now and have nowhere to stay for the night. Can you draw me a map of where they are? So we can avoid them tomorrow.
âFor sure, leave me a moment and I will do thatâÂ
And on those words LĂ©on starts making an approximative map of the region for Hans, showing Hans where the soldiers are.Â
That night, after dinner and the initial panic subsides, Hans goes to sit on the bench outside to enjoy the fresh air of the evening. LĂ©on follows and sits next to him.Â
Hans turns to him, a bit awkwardly,Â
âSo⊠nervous about moving tomorrow?âÂ
LĂ©on's feelings are mixed and thinks a bit before answering.Â
âKind of. I got used to this place, but there is nothing left, not to mention those German soldiers. I'm so worried about that and I'm worried that everything has been stolen already and that we won't find anything but ruins⊠but ⊠I will be with you and it will make it easierâŠâÂ
Hans gives a little hit with his shoulder.Â
âIâm sure it will be ok. We will go before dawn. I will wake you up and we can leave discreetly. I have studied the map you gave me and it will be easy to avoid them. Not to mention that having you by my side is also a great bonus, being with such a pretty and resourceful lady.âÂ
Léon feels himself blushing. He looks away, into the distance.
âI guess we will seeâŠâ
âOh I'm sure it will be ok. Donât think about it anymoreâÂ
Hans places his hand on LĂ©on's lap.Â
LĂ©on feels heat creeping up his belly and continues avoiding making eye contact with Hans.Â
âYes, perhaps.âÂ
âDon't be shy, you can do it !âÂ
Hansâ hand creeps further into LĂ©onâs lap. The young man, breathing heavily, finally looks at Hans. Hans is already looking at him, his face is closer than LĂ©on expected.Â
LĂ©on is happy it's dark enough that Hans won't see his eyes but none the less he looks away again, trying to hide his interest.Â
âAre you uncomfortable, my dear?âÂ
LĂ©on doesn't really know what to say. He isn't uncomfortable, he likes that attention. But he is nervous, he knows where that will lead; he trusts Hans to be a kind, attentive partner, but at the same time he doesn't really know how to feel about being naked in front of somebody else.Â
Unsure how to interpret LĂ©on's silence, Hans gets up and puts a few steps between them.Â
âI'm sorry my dear, I must have misunderstood some things.âÂ
LĂ©on reaches for Hansâ arm before he could go any further.Â
âI'm sorry. I don't mind it, it's just that I haven't been in such a situation⊠in a very long timeâŠâÂ
Hans leans toward LĂ©on and places a hand on LĂ©onâs face.Â
âIs it that you don't mind it, or do you like it? That nuance makes all the difference to me.âÂ
LĂ©on feels himself blushing again, Hans is seemingly more of a gentleman than LĂ©on had hoped. He leans into Hansâ hand unsure of what to say next, and looks down to his feet.Â
âI thinkâŠI think I like it.âÂ
Hans leans closer still and moves his hand under LĂ©onâs chin to force LĂ©on to look at him.Â
âAre you sure of it?âÂ
Léon is struggling to answer, not wanting to disclose his attraction. He pulls away,
âYes, now please stop that.âÂ
âStop what?âÂ
âAsking questions that you definitely know the answer to.âÂ
Hans chuckles, and kneels in front of LĂ©on to be even closer to his face.Â
âSo should I bother to ask if I should kiss you or should I just do it?Â
LĂ©on's breathing is ragged.Â
âYou are doing it againâŠâÂ
Hans caves in and kisses LĂ©on who kisses him back. Soft and chaste at first, growing hungrier. Tongue involved. Hansâ hands move toward LĂ©onâs waist to bring him closer. They only stop when they run out of breath.Â
LĂ©on is feeling an intense heat coiling in his lower body. But he also feels really very shy; what if he was a bad kisser? What if Hans changes his mind?Â
Hans speaks first.Â
âShould we go inside? The air is becoming quite⊠brisk right now.âÂ
â Really? I'm not really cold to be honest, in fact Iâm rather warm.âÂ
âAre you? Can I assume I'm the cause of it?âÂ
âYou know the answerâŠâÂ
âI guess I do, but I like to be a gentleman and make sure you want anything that happens. Anyway I'm going to bed ⊠feel free to join me.â
