I have kind of done ‘Steve waking up in the hospital’ already: with Sam and with Tony and Pepper. And one could argue that most of Freezer Burn is Steve/Peggy, so that sort of leaves your last option… which I am hoping you meant what you said about anything, really, because there was some drift between where I started and where I ended. ;)

Creation Myth

According to the newsreels in 1943, Captain America began his work almost immediately, the Allies’ newest hero barely getting time to rest on his laurels before bringing his new team back out into the field to fight the Nazis.

It was all bullshit, of course. It had taken the better part of two months before all of the paperwork and transfer orders were through, before anyone had supplies, before the SSR had an actual written mandate and Phillips could push through the infighting and bureaucracy to let them try to fill it. Steve had spent all of that time filling out forms in triplicate and learning how to be a commanding officer from Bucky, who’d tried to do it away from both the other Commandos and higher command so that their faith in his capacity to lead wasn’t destroyed before he’d even begun.

They know how to do these things, now, and nobody does super-hero films better, but I’m worried about a certain level of hubris accompanying their approach to Panther.

I hope Marvel understands this: all of black America is watching you. We are hopeful, we are excited. Don’t screw this up. Talk to some actual black people; it’s not enough to “know” Panther; you’ve got to know Panther’s audience.

It is also a mistake to not intrinsically understand how strong this racism thing is and how racism will–I assure you–impact this film’s reception. The problem with most liberals–myself included–is we tend to think we’re post-racial, that we’ve got a handle on things because we’re not racists.

Which is what makes liberals perhaps some of the most pernicious racists of all, because we are in denial of it. Make a good movie, and people will come see it. Well, Get On Upwas an extremely entertaining film with an amazing, practically one-man performance by Chadwick Boseman. But I was sitting in the theatre alone.

Memo to Marvel: Hubris and arrogance re: Panther will kill you. This is not like any other movie you’ve ever done. If done correctly, this can not only be a great super-hero movie, but it could be an important film.

Like most stories about Bucky Barnes and his questionable and sometimes terrible life choices, this one starts because he decides not to listen to Natasha’s cryptic and mostly annoying advice.

He decides not to listen, and he hunts down and kills a deer during that month’s full moon run with his pack and leaves its dead body on Steve Rogers’s front step.

Steve, the man Bucky kind-of-possibly-maybe-absolutely is in love with.

Bucky would try to smother himself after that one, but he’s learned that werewolves are hard to kill.

Bucky’s mother gives him an ultimatum. Bucky doesn’t respond well.

All Barneses are stubborn assholes, Steve observes, as though he doesn’t see the irony of calling someone else stubborn. Or an asshole.

And Bucky can’t even deny he is a total asshole for lying to his mother about dating Steve just so he doesn’t have to bring someone else to her wedding, but damn if he’s not going to give the lie everything he has.
